Why fentanyl?

One hears all these stories of drug users overdosing because they did not know their cocaine or heroin was laced with fentanyl.

But, why?

Why do dealers add fentanyl to their merchandise?

(This belongs on the PB because it is for some reason an actual issue in electoral politics.)

Fentanyl is cheap and can be pressed into pills that look identical to any other medication. It makes $ for manufacturers, traffickers and sellers.

Meanwhile, the government has cracked down so heavily on pharmacists, making them the gate keepers for the pushback against narcotic medications, that many people are denied access to medications they have been prescribed by doctors.

If your prescription medication is stolen you’re out of luck, even if it’s pain medication following a surgery.

When someone needs their meds but can’t get them legally they often turn to the street - with no guarantee of what is in it even if it appears to be a factory made pill.

One improper dose can kill.

But why mix fentanyl with cocaine or heroin? It's not cheaper than those drugs, is it?

Yes, fentanyl is much cheaper to produce than harvesting poppies or coca and refining, then importing it. And it doesn’t require the hassles of cultivation.

And a much smaller amount can produce the same narcotic effect - easier to transport.

It's just another opioid -- don't see why it would be cheaper than heroin.

Fentanyl is entirely synthetic and can be produced from other substances that are either legal or much less regulated than opiates.

Fentanyl is synthetic so not a true opiate. It’s cheap to manufacture, and a small amount goes a long way. Its 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more than heroin.
If you cut it into another drug it makes it stronger, if you don’t know what you are doing and use a little too much, it can kill them.
The only time I was on fentanyl for under a hour, was the only time I can remember in my entire life not feeling any pain. Unfortunately, I also couldn’t stand up by myself, so not practical outside of procedures with an anesthesiologist. I definitely understood the appeal though.

Because you can use less cocaine or heroin if you have a bit of fentanyl cut in. It is cheaper than cocaine and heroin.
