Ah, revisionist history at its finest. Now I know for a fact you have no clue about the Treaty of Tripoli, but your dubious reference sure uses it, wrongly I might add, by poaching only part of Article 11. Let me give you the whole article:

“As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion,-as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Musselmen,-and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.” Article 11

In its own time it was known officially as the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the United States of America and the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli of Barbary. We know it now as the Treaty of Tripoli.

Your homework for today is question why it was written like that? I’ll give you a hint. There was something happening in that certain area. There is a certain Hymn of a certain dept. of our Navy that is sung to this day due to the treaty being broken around 1797, which led to a war that that hymn was penned.

This treaty was very similar to the original with some odd exceptions…the biggest and near and dear to our discussion is the clause declaring that the United States is “not in any way founded on the Christian Religion” is completely missing. Here is part of Article 14 of the 1805 treaty:

“As the Government of the United States of America, has in itself no character of enmity against the Laws, Religion or Tranquility of Musselmen, and as the said States never have entered into any voluntary war or act of hostility against any Mahometan Nation, except in the defence [sic] of their just rights to freely navigate the High Seas: It is declared by the contracting parties that no pretext arising from Religious Opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the Harmony existing between the two Nations…”

So, If the United States was not founded on the Christian religion, why so conspicuously leave that clause out when the treaty was rewritten in 1805? Your whole argument hinges on the original treaty, so why did you leave the follow on out?
