I don't think it would work in many cases. Of course the 50 percent plus divorce rate in monogamous marriages tells a story too. Human relationships are complex. But driving a car has risks and is complex. The key to any marriage and certainly to an open marriage is facing the complexity. Talking. Thinking what works and what would be a bust. The STD risks are too great to just have random sex with strangers. So most of our FWB are people we know very well and can trust. Vacation time is condom time. Vacationing at the beach is going to end up with sexual opportunities. So, we plan on having condoms available when we take vacations in romantic settings. Jealousy is a mental illness based on self interest. It should be defeated regardless of marriage. As humans we are capable of maturing past jealous. My point is that there are problems with an open or a closed marriage but there are also solutions.

We are raised to expect a man and a woman get married and can only be sexually attracted to eachother... forever. This is unreasonable. Yes many couples can maintain a faithful marriage. But I expect very few never develop a sexual interest to someone outside of thier union. Our marriage is very sound and we truly love eachother. But we both independently found ourselves desiring other people sexually. So after many years of talking we decided to follow those urges safely and honestly with eachother. This has resulted in greater trust and affection for eachother while expanding our sexual satisfaction.
 
I've had a fantasy of seeing my wife play with another man for a while now. We have a bit of a dead beadroom for a couple years now and I've suggested I would be open to her playing with other men if she wanted but she never seemed interested so I let it go.

Yesterday she was out with our kids and I saw she had left her phone on the bed so on a whim I snooped on her messages.
I saw there were several messages between her and one of her former co-workers (who we'll call Mike). There was some joking with each other and flirting and they were sending pics of cats to each other and he was sending her pics of the house he is building. Honestly I got pretty excited about the whole thread between the two of them. I scrolled through the history quite a bit hoping to see some racy stuff but there wasn't anything super inappropriate. I've met Mike at parties (before he left for another job) and I like him though he's not the kind of guy I would expect my wife to flirt with! He's a little older so I am betting he's getting a rush out of chatting with my wife. Thinking about him texting with her gets me excited :giggle:

Apparently their boss would always crack jokes about how Mike was my wife's 'work husband' since they would spend a lot of time talking at the office. My wife wold get all annoyed by the comments, but now I wonder if there was more going on.

I don't have any plans to talk to her about this and I am secretly hoping it escalates. Maybe down the line it will lead to something more so I am curious how this will play out!

Frankly I am happy that she has this in her life and I hope she gets a little dopamine hit when he messages her. I really want to get my hands on her phone again and see if there is more chatting with them!

Hey, it wasn’t me!
But then again, I probably would do something like that. I’ve been chatting with an ex girlfriend on instagram lately. It probably could escalate, she seems a bit needy but I don’t really need that kind of complication in my life. Sometimes ex’s can get a little crazy so I try to keep the chats benign. Mostly.
