Supreme Court to hear arguments on Trump criminal immunity claims

The case is currently on hold and the Supreme Court's decision maintains the status quo in that respect.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear arguments over former President Donald Trump's immunity claims in special counsel Jack Smith's D.C. election case.

The case is currently on hold and the Supreme Court's decision maintains the status quo in that respect, but set oral arguments for April 22, Politico reported.

Trump has argued he is immune from prosecution on grounds of presidential immunity. Judge Tanya Chutkan rejected those claims, prompting Trump to appeal her decision. Smith had sought intervention by the Supreme Court at the time, though it declined to rule ahead of the lower court. A three-judge panel then ruled against Trump, after which he asked the Supreme Court to stay that decision.

The decision to hear the matter, however, came at the urging of Smith, The Hill reported. With oral arguments slated for late April, a court decision could conceivably come mid-year and leave room for the trial to occur prior to the 2024 presidential election.

I hear Maddow is jumping out of her ass.

Were you really so stupid as to think this topic didn't have a thread after 24 hours? 🤣

Duplicate thread
Sorry, but it drew you in. This event has all but closed down Jack Smith's DC case for the immediate future. It will be late in the year before it is up and running again.

Dems are upset. Disrupts Smith’s election calendar.

We are upset. The Supreme Court is actively colluding with the Trump team to delay his federal criminal trial until after the election.

I can see where you might consider that funny, though.
BTW, my apologies for duplicating your thread.

You shouldn't be upset. You'd do the same thing if you were in Trump's shoes. The SCOTUS is taking up Trump's claim of immunity because the issue is central to his case. Be advised as well that Jack Smith himself urged the Court to take up the issue forthwith and they are doing so. this case is going to fail because Jack Smith is a failure. He is a political headhunter who has fucked up more than one big case.

Do you really want to give President Biden immunity?

Hello March!

Welcome to Judge Cannon’s courtroom in sunny Florida. With the Mr. Smith’s politically ambitious goal of a Super Tuesday trial in DC placed in pause mode, all eyes have turned to the tropical paradise where former President Trump and Disney World call home. The documents case is upon us.

Sunshine can be a wonderful disinfectant. The question of whether to let the sun shine on sealed evidence is expected to be the hot topic on opening day. Trump’s lawyers have requested the unsealing of voluminous evidence that’s currently sealed. Mr. Smith is pleading to keep it from the prowling eyes of the press and the public.

Disney recently announced plans to pour billions into Florida and create 13,000 new jobs. Could a Mr. Smith’s Wild Ride be unveiled this spring? Stay tuned.

Sigh.
It’s times like these that I wish there was maybe an emoji that could convey my feeling of crazy talk 😜multiplied by 100.

He has immunity or he will be charged with murder for that ill-fated drone attack that killed innocent civilians instead of the terrorist he was hoping would be there, during the Afghanistan withdrawal. He would face murder charges ffor the deaths of those 11 Marines during the withdrawal due to his incompetent leadership. He could be tried for the murder of Laken Riley because he has failed to enforce standing immigration law. All after leaving office.

That's not what he asked.

If Biden ordered the Secret Service to round up all known NRA members and detain them in internment camps without charges, I guarantee that 1) Rightguide et al. would be outraged, 2) they would have a legitimate reason to be, because 3) that is unconstitutional. And 4) They certainly wouldn't feel that Biden should be immune from charges in that case.

Trump's crimes were just as egregious. Perhaps more so. There should be no immunity, and no argument. Nobody should be above the law- ESPECIALLY when a leader violates the Constitution and attempts to circumvent the election process to install themselves as a dictator. But of course, this Supreme Court, which I would consider to be out of control and less than fully legitimate to begin with, seems to have a very loose grasp on the Constitution anyway.
