IMO the whole point of the song is, for these losers, it will be life-changing. Not only a badly needed infusion of cash, but it'll repair the damage to their reputation (the song doesn't say what caused it, but it does let you know the problem exists: "Word's been passed this is our last chance").

Except I get the nagging feeling that they're going to end up dead or under arrest before the night is over. IMHO the point of the song is that they are deluding themselves.

I agree, but that doesn't contradict my interpretation. They both fit: if they succeed, it's a life-changing achievement; but they probably won't.
