after being killed in a hit and run, and with speculation linking his death to buster murdaugh, funds have been raised to exhume the body of his former classmate

Authorities have never publicly disclosed whether there was a link between Smith’s death and the Murdaugh family, but some witnesses have speculated about possible foul play involving Smith’s classmate, Buster, the eldest Murdaugh son.
and then there's that suspicious death of the housekeeper(?), too, the one that was put down to 'accidental death'.

Considering what came out at the trial about Pappy Murdaugh trying to cover up how buster was driving the boat when that girl was killed, I would say it is possible.

coming to light:

  • a rape kit was performed on Stephen's body shortly after death
  • the results of that kit have not been made public
  • how does the suspicion of rape meet hit&run?
  • randy murdaugh, alex's brother, contacted Stephen's father within 72 hours of his death offering free legal counsel when the family had no interaction or personal connections with the murdaughs... the father turned it down
  • both alex and randy murdaugh were seen at the site where Stephen had been found shortly after wards, despite not being involved in the case
something came up in the murdaugh double-murder case that has set rumours (fact-based or otherwise) flying

Michael Duncan, a former South Carolina Highway Patrol supervisor, told NewsNation's Ashleigh Banfield during an exclusive interview Wednesday that troopers were never given the opportunity to present their findings.

Duncan was working during the incident, but he never went to the scene. He said troopers received a call to stay back.

Smith's wounds didn't make sense with a hit-and-run, according to Duncan.

A whole family of killers. Except the wife, I haven’t heard she was accused of anything.

2 people identified as 'persons of interest' in the murder of Stephen, with histories of violence, plus links with Randy Murdaugh.

plus... the black and white difference in the two reports filed by first the local sheriff and then the one by the Highway patrol guy.
Sheriff's report states Stephen was wearing a white polo shirt. The H.P guy notes Stephen was dressed in a black, short-sleeved nike t-shirt (no collar) ... which kinda begs some questions, right?

buster murdaugh named by multiple witnesses as having been in a covert relationship with Stephen, and it was Randy Murdaugh who told the parent of one of the 2 persons of interest to call the police: apparently, this father said his son had told him the other boy had hit Stephen with his car, and he had reached out to the lawfirm about it and that's when he got the call from the now murdered Randy.

In addition, Wunderlich explained that SLED has been looking into the details since 2021 when the case was reopened "based upon information gathered during the course of the double murder investigation of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh" according to NBC.

While they did not expand on what that additional information was, we do know that a private investigator hired by Stephen's mother Sandy Smith discovered that he was linked to Buster Murdaugh (the oldest Murdaugh son, who is still alive). Buster was reportedly in a covert relationship with Stephen, who was openly gay, and the secret nature of their connection was due to the Murdaughs not wanting it attached to their family name.

However, the rumor mill continued to run despite their reported desires to cover things up, and CNN noted that initial South Carolina Highway Patrol case files for Stephen's death showed dozens of mentions of the Murdaugh name (including Buster) by both witnesses and investigators.
