A Combined list of Challenges and Contests

Except Crime and Punishment by its name conjures up Dostoevskian angst and high drama, whereas Mickey Spillane conjures up something completely different.

"Noir ain't angst," said the dame in the tight red dress, cigarette smoke drifting up from her lips. "Anyway, all you got in Siberia is snow. A girl would freeze her tits off up there."

C&P is merely about crime-related narrative, in any style or no style. It's not supposed to be a direct allusion to Dostoevsky.

I think that's its charm; these events, in my experience, are most successful when they stay as general as possible.

Who knows? There might be a horde of authors out there who would love the opportunity to pen some Charles Dickens-inspired porn! You could call it The Charles Suck My Dick(ens) Challenge! Suck it and see...it might be a huge success!

Again, I respect an opposing view.

But I think anyone who wants to write Dickens-themed smut can already do so. I don't see the need for a new "event" to legitimize it. At a certain point, if everything is an event, then nothing is an event. If that makes sense.

I'm inclined to agree. Although I suspect we might have reached a peak year.

My personal feeling is that Amorous Goods might have reached a natural end point - there weren't many stories last year, and even though I enjoyed writing one of them, and I have an idea for another this year, I suspect that other challenges might be more attractive.
I haven't been able to come up with anything new for AG. What little I thought of, just wouldn't work.

I could see if it went beyond Dickens, and was just some classic writer inspired contest where you emulate well known ones, like Dickens, Poe, Lewis Carrol, or even Hunter Thompson. But I don't think we need any more, there's already so many, they pretty much overlap.

All good. I see challenges as a fun way to get involved, both through organizing and contributing. The more the merrier is my approach, I guess.

I think instead of having a Mickey Spillane event every year, it might be an idea to have a rotating list of authors to imitate changing every year. Or else a simple 'In the style of' event where everyone can choose their favourite author to parody.

I don't do MS because I've never read Spillane, but one has to wonder: if we've got an event aping the style of Spillane, then why not Faulkneresque erotica? Fuckscenes written in the manner of Mary Shelley or Charles Dickens? A Tolkien event, with frequent use of the verb "to be" and a lot of attention paid to matters botanical? If one is approved, why not all? It's unmanageable after awhile. I think, in general, it might be best to run some of these every two or three years, rather than annually.

I'm all in favor of crime-themed literature in general, and the C&P event was a lot of fun to write for.

I submitted to the Mickey Spillane event last year, but I'm not interested in doing so again. I thought it would be great if it were, to your point, a different author every year.

There's several dozen of them kicking around here (examples, not challenges.) This one is excellent.
It is absolutely superb. Inspiring, even.

I've searched the author but he (I very much presume 'he') hasn't published anything since 2009. I still sent some feedback, but I'd be amazed if he ever sees it.

Just done this for myself, but figure it will be useful to others as well. This is everything announced this year, whether contest or challenge (for anyone unsure, the difference is that contests have winners and challenges don't)

EDIT: Added Mickey Spillane
EDIT: (17th Jan) Added What I Wrote and Why
I'm relatively new to all this and have not yet posted anything yet (though I plan to do so in a not too distant future).
Can you explain the characteristics of each of these? Some of them I think I know but others 9On the job, Heroism, Mickey Spillane...) are pure mystery. by the way, i'm not a native English speaker.
I wanted to post a story in the Pink Orchid challenge but I was told the story was not complete as it is and the deadline was too short for me to try and amend it.
I am hoping to propose a story for one or two of these events but I need to know what it's all about.
thank you.
