Being flogged, first of all, doesn't feel like a bad pain at all to me, but like the feeling you get from a good deep massage. You know, that hurts so good feeling. And after a while the thumping sensation, the repetitive rhythm, and the state of submitting to it combine into an almost trance like state. I feel at the same time both lost in a dream state and hyper aware of my self, sexually. It's hard to describe if you haven't felt it. Just got up to look at my ass. Yes it is still red with little stripes across it.

I got Himself a new flogger a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't what I thought it would be.

Stiff black leather, braided strands with knots in the ends. It was a totally differently feeling than the suede flogger I have.

Being really strapped (oh a pun!) for cash right now ... we can't afford to actually buy a flogger.

Howvere, yesterday I saw in a local fashion shop that the hippy-type belts beloved of the 60's and 70's are back in a big way. The type that are woven leather with long fringes. I saw one and wondred ...

If the strands were cut off and bound to a piece of dowel ... might do? What do you all think? The strands were quite thin ... would that mean more of a sting?
 
It's creative to try to make your own, it also means you will never look at anything again without considering how useful it could be in a D/s situation

Howver, I suggest caution and discussion.

A simple thing as getting the wrong type of candle can result in severe burning, tying the wrong type of rope/string to a dowel could result in knots and, therefore, marking in the wrong place.

The Dom has to think this all through as it is the combination of toys with what I call 'head control' that does the wonder.

Discussion and careful experimentation.
 
Willowpuss, it's easy to make a good flogger by yourself.

This type will cause a sexy noise, and will have some sting if the tails are long and the lashes are hard. A version with shorter tails could be quite mild, for some light whipping.

Take the rubber inner tube of a bicycle wheel. Cut of perhaps half a meter (~ two feet) or whatever lenght you prefer. The longer it is, the more pain to the "victim". Cut a number of "tails" of preferred width from one end with a pair of scissors and leave a handle of 15 cm (1/2 feet) in one end. Cut every second tail out. Fill the handle with paper or whatever you have to make it hard.

Yes.

Although a deer or elk flogger will probably never elicit squeals of anything but giggles if you are playing with an extreme masochist, for most they are a good all-purpose toy.

Also, how much practice does it take to become at least moderately proficient when using a flogger?

Depends. How good do you want to be? You'll only learn to be *safe* by hitting a pillow or a dress mannequin and knowing how not to hit kidneys spinal cord or face, or too high up on each shoulder (you want to place the blow in the center of each shoulder blade, in the center of each buttock, and environs) You won't become good, better, or excellent, until you have the feedback, excitement and energy of a live target. Attend a demo if you can whatsoever, watch experienced players do their thing. Spend enough on your first flogger to get a piece that *you* enjoy the look, feel, weight and smell of.
