2002 Survivor Literotica Discussion Thread

KillerMuffin,

Maybe I missed something but what's in it for the winning writer's, other than blisters on their fingertips?

We're waiting for Laurel to finish officially sanctioning it so you'll have to wait to see what's in it for you.

:D Hi RF.

Re your question what's in it for us?

How about the personal challenge of writing in genres you would not by choice contemplate.

That is why I am in it - prizes well there are a heck of a lot of writers and few prizes so I am not holding my breath on that one.

:p I am a lousy poet "roses are red, violets are blue ... etc" is about the limit of my attempts but I am still in there and will be trying.

Come on try doing it for the blisters its better way of getting them than pulling your plonker!

Fame, fortune and the adulation of your fellow literoticans...

Perhaps, maybe...

So I've heard...

:D

Killer Muffin,

Is this initial low sign-up usual, or is something going wrong. I am asking because at this moment there only appears to be 6 of us taking part! - I don't want to carry on trying to write stories on themes I am not comfortable with if there is no point.

I mean I am doing Lesbians at the moment (which I can live with - just, but I do not think I am very good), but Gay Male will be really challenging - and the answer is yes it does send challenges to me about my own sexuality.

Well, this is the second time it's happened. The last time there were four people playing until Laurel advertised it and put up some prize money.

Laurel told me that she'll get to it. Really.

I think that we've also got the scoring on this one rigged so that you can avoid the categories you really want to avoid rather easily, even without an immunity, and still make enough points to win.

Well, let me tell you, it's like this.

Some folks climb mountains "because they're there" Others put themselves under self-imposed deadlines to write stories in fields which may not interest them. IMHO, all those mountain climbers are nuts. As for the writers, well, they're writers.

IMHO, I'm already giving the "powers that be" here a lot of free "content" in the form of stories, critiques, & comments. In return, I'm hoping input from folks such as KM and the handful of others who give useful critiques and advice will help me become a better writer.

Besides, I'm stuck on chapter 12 of my second novel.

KM and Rumpleforeskin -

Thanks for your replies.

I am off back to the story I am writing (struggling with). Maybe writing stories on uncomfortable subjects is a bit like climbing mountains, - when I was a kid (a JD) my folks sent me on an Outward Bound Course, evidently climbing mountains had something to do with character development. I think writing a story that is uncomfortable is a writing equivalant.

So thanks again.

I don't know how it happened...

but I've got two scoring posts!

It won't let me delete one of them.

Anyone know how I can do it?

:)

P_P_Man,

Have you tried using the Edit button at the bottom of the post you want to delete.

I think that will work.

Although I'm a good European prefer my flag to yours.

Blame jon.hayworth

he planted the seed. After dithering around this for ages I/we have decided to give it a whirl. As Alex de Kok and Frederick Carol are one and the same person, the Scrumptious Muffiness has said we can put our names on one entry form, because we already have three qualifying entries, but under the two names. Whether all of the categories will "benefit" from our efforts is as yet unknown, but tallyho!

Alex / Fred

PS: All future entries will be as Alex de Kok

Thanks. I was doing that but nothing was happening but the extra post has now disappeared!

Maybe it had a delayed action thingy attached to it, in case you change your mind...:D

Very striking flag. Bit like a negative Cross of St George.

P_P_MAN,

Glad I was able to help.

The flag is the Cornish national flag - Saint Piran's cross. One day we might join the Welsh and Scots with our own assembly. Probably with the help of the European Court of Human Rights.

Glad the points are adding on - although I hope you don't get too far ahead of me - I'm going back to writing my Fetish story bye.

Chain Stories

Has anyone given any thought to the Chain Story aspect of Survivor. I was mooching around Lit and suddenly had an idea (that's today's ration used...)

This contest is called Survivor. How about we each write about a survivor, say from a shipwreck, adrift in a lifeboat or cast up on a desert/deserted island. The same lifeboat or island, obviously!

If anyone thinks this is a good idea I'm prepared to write a background introduction episode and you can all take it from there, in whichever direction your character's thoughts go. The common theme of course is the shipwreck, with erotic thoughts and memories, obviously. Use of each other's characters could perhaps be permitted?

Any thoughts?

Alex

PS: There may be other (non-Survivor) writers who'd like to play, too.

Just a question or two

Is it too late for me to enter this, and do I have to have a story previously subbmited here to paticpate. Thanks for you help.
Johnny
P.S. Your stories rule KillerMuffin

Great idea!

Alex,

I, for one, REALLY like that chain story idea. I already have an idea or two for a character...

:)

I'd especially like it if the characters were on an island.

Alex,

Count me in for the chain story idea.

Would it be a good idea to draw everyone's attention to the idea by starting a new thread "Survivor Chain Story".

Anyone who gets sea-sick don't sit next to me in the boat - I am heartless!:p :p

Survivor Chain Story

Jon, and others,

I agree, it would be a good idea to start a new thread for this, but in this Awards and Contests Forum it takes special permission. Perhaps KM can start one?

If it does take off, how does everyone feel about opening it to non-Survivor writers? I know there's some interest in a chain story and extra participants wouldn't affect Survivor writers. Chain Story is one of the categories for Survivor and with three of us at least showing definite interest I think we have a go.

GoddessKaren, I too have a preference for the island setting, but then, in my Frederick Carol persona, I've been there before! See The Gift. I'd be interested to see what the others think, but once the boat goes down there's scope for lifeboat, island and/or both!

Alex

Alex,

Lets hope KM sees these posts.

As for Survivor and non Survivor participants taking part in the chain story.

I can see advantages to restrict -

(1) If we restrict participation in the chain story to those who are declared Survivor contestants, we might boost the numbers participating in Survivor.

(2) At the conclusion we all (those participating) have a joint venture story that represents Survivor 2002 and has a collective authorship identity.

Having said that I am happy to take part no matter what.

I'd like to paticapte in the chain story, but I feel I'm not ready yet as a writer to paticapete in the contest. Maybe next year I will

Historically, Lit does once chain every year and we seem a tidge late for it. That doesn't meet it can't change.

Personally, I'd prefer to limit it to people of my choosing. :D

That's not going to happen. Laurel is the most equal opportunity person I've ever met. I doubt she'll go for having it limited to a specifc group of people simply because there really is no good reason for it and a few non-contestants have already expressed interest in participating in one. The chain and the contest are separate.

There was already interest in the Author board, but like a bitch on wheels, I killed the thread. *sigh*

I may or may not get to chat with Laurel this PM. She will hop into the forum chat on the evenings when there appears to be interest in it. Just scan the GB first page for a thread that says "Chat" and see if Laurel posted on it recently.

I will bring it up to her when I see her, but generally she leaves these things up to the authors to figure out and puts in her two bits to keep it in line with how she views her site.

The big one this year is subject matter.

So far a preference for Islands or a survivor theme has been expressed and that's the extent of it.

I've gotta toodle now, but if I don't see anything posted by someone next I swing through, I'll post a thread on my own.

*KM is no more special than anyone else here. Just mouthier and more impatient. Please don't feel diffident about doing what you like or starting what you want to start. The only authority figure here is Laurel.

Anyone can start a thread in any forum except the Admin one. Including this one. *Note that KM is not a moderator here*

Chain Themes

KM -

When we did the chain story last year, the one thing that really made the stories "zing" (besides the great writing) was the fact that the protagonist had a job that required travel and visiting foreign lands.

I hope that TRAVEL is an element that we can work into the chain this year.

As far as content, last year was a series of pages from a "Memoir" of a young lady as she grew to maturity.

How about another type of chronicled series of events that a person or person(s) might keep?
Diary, Log, Letters, etc.

Also, we could do something like follow a particular item owner to owner. Something personal, like a hairbrush, a mirror, a vanity table, a robe, etc.

If we decide to follow something through time, we could follow a special book (magical?) as it travels from hand-to-hand over time.

Perhaps starting with the creation of the book in a Tibetan Monestary in Uzbehkestan in the 9th Century.

Thinking out loud about a possible chain. Is this the appropriate place to do so?

Thanks.

It won't let me!

When I try I get a message which begins:
You do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
and then goes on to give several reasons, none of which seem to be valid, as I can post OK in the other forums! Including new threads.

If we are to start a separate thread on Chain stories in the 'Contests' area we need to be able to. Alternatively, we go back to Authors' Hangout.

Thoughts/comments anyone? Anyone else tried to start a thread here?

Alex

PS: Judo, some good ideas there!
