TENS - Whats Your experience?

Well since i am new here i assume this has probably been brought up time and time again but since i haven't a clue yet how to find things on here ~L~ i will ask this now, please have patience with me if you have responded in the past to this.

I am curious about TENS having seen the item in online stores and such, but i haven't any experience with it or the safety and precautions to take in using it, As well as the pain and pleasure.

If you can help educate me in this area or point to some URLs i can read it would be most welcome.

My only experiences with tens have been through physcial therapy. It was something I've actually enjoyed having because it helped wake up some of my nerves and get blood flowing and all that other stuff. My PT would be mildly surprised when I kept telling her I didn't feel a thing, with the unit getting higher and higher.

But that's probably not the answer you're looking for.

I use a TENS machine for pleasure, what do you want to know specifically? as for urls, try electro sex in a search emgine. I assume you are a woman? is it for yourself or to torture some poor soul

What do i want to know?? mm i could ask many questions but i don't want to take up all of Anyones time..

Mainly i am curious about the pleasure side of it.. is there any risks ie. somone with a bad heart (i know a stupid example but the only one i could think of right now ~L~)

Also the pleasure aspects of it for both men and women.. i guess i just haven't been able to find much info on the subject and am curious about all parts. Thanks for the help on the subject line to look up as well.

As for the heart bit, as long as you don't put the electrodes near the heart it should be ok, unless you mean from all the pleasure Mine uses only a 9v battery but you'd be surprised what it can do. I use it for masturbating and it is now my prefered method which should say something about its potency Are you thinking of using it on yourself? unless you can get something to insert inside your vagina I think you'd place one electrode above and below your shaved vulva, your skin should be smooth and dry. I find the positive lead best near my glans (clit for you) and the other lower down. The only experience I have with a TENS machine is at an osteopath, getting some work done on my back (twisted it a couple of years ago, nothing serious, just a niggle.) Oh, and needles were involved as well (acupuncture.)

The TENS machine was fun, and very relaxing. Of course, I imagine having it attached at other points of the body could result in quite different responses.

First, I want to say this post is NOT to be considered an education on how to play safely with electricity. You need to take control of this for yourself and learn how it works. Electroplay is not for the uneducated. It would be good for you to know what can happen so you don't allow that to happen.

There are different types of electricity, and a TENS unit uses DC (direct current). AC (alternating current) is house current, and it will very likely kill you. Do NOT mess with AC current.

A violet wand uses static electricity, and that is safer than DC. But, they are rather pricey things to have for most people. They are a great visual experience, though.

There are different types of TENS units for varied prices. Some are just your basic unit, and some are very advanced with pulsating settings, varied frequency settings, and things like that. With the digital age upon us, several options are available.

The basic rule of thumb for electroplay is "always below the waist", because of the heart. The heart beats because of a small electrical stimulation. If you interrupt this stimulation, our heart could stop or be damaged.

The basic TENS unit is a single pole type. This is something that has two separate wire leads, and the current will flow from one lead to the other. This is always the way DC current flows, in one direction. With the basic single pole TENS, you can damage or at least interrupt your heartbeat, so below the waist is how this unit should be used.

There is a more expensive TENS with more than one connection point, so you can have different sensations on different body areas at the same time. These have two sets of leads and two independent adjusting sections on the controls.

Some of these can also work together to give you a sort of quad effect, if you understand that. It will seem like the current is going in circles, from pole to pole, if you adjust the knobs for that effect. You can also have two different sensations going on at the same time.

These more expensive TENS are called double pole TENS or bi-polar TENS. They are generally considered OK for above the waist play because of how they work. But, I say that with extreme caution for the beginner.

With a single pole TENS, you will have two leads (+ and -) with the current flowing from one lead to the other. If you were to use this type of device for nipple sensations, you would have the current flowing from one nipple to the other, because that is how the current flows.

BUT, at the same time, the current will not only flow from nipple to nipple, it will also be flowing through your body, and your heart is in the direct path of this current. This is NOT a smart method to use with a single pole TENS.

The double pole or bi-polar TENS has both + and - leads in the same wire, and so the connectors are very close together. For nipple play, you would connect one set to each nipple, and the current flows ONLY within the nipple itself and doesn't reach any other part of the body. This way, the current will be traveling less than an inch or so, within the set, instead of across the whole chest cavity, as with the single TENS.

NOW, although this seems to be a proven method for nipple play, we are talking about a type of electricity. Sure, it is DC and that is the second safest type of electricity behind static.

BUT, if you somehow don't follow directions, or if your TENS malfunctions etc., you might not get a second chance. This is why I say learn all you can about how electrical current travels, and be aware of what can go wrong before you even attempt to play.

It is a lot of fun, because I play with it and enjoy it. But, even the safest electrician will tell you they can make a mistake. And, if you have ever seen an electrician work, they don't take chances.

The big problem when you are playing with electricity in a sexual situation is your desires for climax and fun can dull your common sense, and that is a combination for disaster .

Not only do you have to be safe, sane and consensual when playing with a TENS, violet wand, etc., you also have to understand the unit's limitations, your limitations and the fact that electricity is unforgiving.

Keep in mind you can't see electrical current. It will take the shortest route it can from point A to point B. It is up to you to make sure that route is the one you want it to take. No flammable liquids should be around, and you should know electrical current conducts better in a moist climate. If one of you or both of you are sweating, there is moisture present.

I have both a TENS and a violet wand. I have also made other electrical toys that I play with. BUT, I have been to school to learn how electricity works and can act.

Using your TENS below the waist shouldn't cause a problem. The cheapest unit around would work fine for that. But, don't venture into the unknown of other areas without knowing what you are doing. Play smart! Even the smallest current can kill you, if you get it too close to the heart.

I hope I haven't dampened your desire for electroplay, but I also hope I have given you something to think about in relation to electricity. Just play smart and play safe.

In that lengthy post of mine, I failed to explain any of the feelings electroplay can have on your body and mind. So, I will try to do that, now.

Electricity has evil baggage in most people's minds, for good reason. The word electricity is misleading because it includes all forms, AC, DC, Static, etc. in that one word.

AC and the more powerful forms of DC will kill you, and so we tend to think all forms of electricity will be the same. This is not true, but because of this, electroplay has a bit of evil going along with it.

We all have surely seen those horror scenes where someone is bound and gagged, being subjected to electro torture by an evil scientist. The victim's jerking about and muffled screams become ingrained into the mind of the viewer, and it seems to be a very unpleasant experience, for sure.

Well, that is true for some forms of electricity. But, when you are talking about the lesser DC current of a TENS unit, even the medical arena has been using them for muscle regeneration and stimulation for years. Chiropractors use them, and physical therapists use them and they do work for this purpose.

A version of a TENS unit is also used as a method of restarting a heart attack victim's heart, but those are more advanced with a computer and other sensors besides the TENS current.

TENS gets its name from its original application. Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation are the big words, and I for one am more at home calling them a TENS unit.

Doing a search in Google.com for the word electroplay will give you quite a few options for the TENS and violet wands. They can all be a lot of fun, but they can also be very expensive. But, a search such as this will also give you knowledge of what is available.

As with other typical every day vanilla things, the more kinky sex world has found TENS units to be rather enjoyable in their play. Even the old violet wand of the late 1800s has been reinvented to be used in this way. Actually, the violet wand is my favorite, although the TENS does a fine job.

As I said before, electricity has some evil baggage in the uneducated mind of most people. So, even when educated about it, the better judgment of your mind will still see it with a bit of evil attached. This can be part of the fun.

If you are a submissive, being subjected to electroplay by a dominant can be fun because of how it feels, and also because of this evil. It is kind of like anal sex is to some people, feeling it to be taboo and then it has an appeal because of that.

The DC current of a TENS unit is usually created by a 9 volt battery or some other similar size. Don't mistaken the small size of this battery, as being without a little punch. Have you ever been tempted to touch the end of a 9 volt battery to your tongue to see if it is good? You will maybe see its potential power this way.

The current used in a TENS unit is called the square wave. I won't go into much detail with this, but it is called the square wave because that is what all pure digital waves are. The sine wave of AC looks kind of like an S laying on its side, where the square wave of DC looks like a square with the bottom out of it. There are reasons for this, which I won't bother going into.

The basic TENS will create this square wave but you will not see it. It will be felt as a continuous sensation that is increased or decreased with turning the knob up and down like a volume knob of your stereo.

There are some TENS units that will also be able to add to this square wave with additional sensations. One addition could be a pulsating addition, where the sensation of the wave will be quickly turned on and off with quick repetition by the device. You will have a knob to change the intensity of this pulse (amplitude), along with one for the speed it repeats (frequency).

The more advanced TENS will even have a knob to control how long each pulse lasts (width), giving you 3 independent adjustments to this pulsing. This can be an interesting sensation, although a TENS like this can be very expensive.

Another option is a modulation effect which does the above for you changing amplitude, frequency and width, creating a sort of ocean wave that is difficult to explain. The unit varies each control to give you multiple sensations. This ocean effect happens because of how each control reacts to the others, changing in intensity, thus continually changing the overall wave itself. I hope I explained that so you understand. Some things just have to be felt to be understood.

One more option is called the Burst. It is more understandable in what it does by its name. It will be a quick instantaneous burst of current, being a quick shock of varied intensity. You can control how intense it is and how often it happens.

These above adjustments will give you a lot of different feelings, depending on where they are attached, and the mindset you are in at the time. A creative mind will probably be better at this than someone who isn't into experimenting.

The sensation of a TENS can be anything from a mild little tickle at a low setting, to a more intense bee sting like feeling at a higher setting. Then, the modulation effect will give you the varied intensities within those extremes.

If you get a TENS that is powerful enough, you can actually have enough intensity to make your muscles jerk or twitch with the pulse. This is more the method of physical therapists, but it can also be interesting in play.

As I said in my first post, be sure you play safe and don't let your arousal overpower your common sense. Electroplay is quite enjoyable, in the hands of someone who is experienced. In the hands of someone who is either new to it or can't be trusted, it can be very dangerous. This applies to all forms of BDSM play, not just electroplay.

I hope I have given you a little insight of what to expect with a TENS, and I also hope your electroplay experience gives you wonderful sensations and fulfilling satisfaction for a long time to come.

I want to qualify some of DVS's comments - although the TENS machine's input is from a DC source 9v battery - for all practical purposes the output is AC.

Using the TENS as a toy throws a big responsibility on the Dom - remember it is not only the amplitude of the shocks but also the frequency - hitting a harmononic of the subs heartbeat could lead to disastrous consequences. If you are going above your subs waist make sure that you brush up on your CPR skills. And if you are using the machine alone stay below the waist.

Unless the person being subjected to the shocks has a bad heart there should be no problem with applying one electrode to a nipple provided that the direct path to the other electrode does not go near the heart. - e.g.

(1) Electrode right nipple other Electrode right arm - fine

(2) Electrode right nipple other electrode left nipple - NO
(3) Electrode right nipple other electrode clit - fine If you can stand this you will have an extra

I'm not going to haggle with anyone over what is safe and what isn't. Electricity is a force that should always be used with caution. Electroplay is fun, but I don't want to be associated with someone getting hurt from any misunderstanding.

I will not say I agree or disagree with the above quoted statements, because it could only turn into a back and forth thing that isn't beneficial to anyone other than to add up my total post numbers.

I will say I know there are AC TENS units, but not all are AC. And, some consider AC TENS to be the safer of the two types, when others consider the DC variety to be safer. You see, when it comes to some things, it depends on who you talk to, and what you have experienced.

There are terms to boggle the mind...biphasic wave units, monophasic and triphasic, unipolar and bipolar types, etc. There are basic units for simple pleasures and combo units that are quite elaborate. There are many types of configurations and I could go on.

Whatever unit you choose, the current should never reach an extreme level or extreme duration. The human body is resilient, but soft tissue can be damaged. Don't let your arousal take over your common sense. Don't try to find the biggest and baddest of these things, if you are just beginning. Start off slow and learn what works and what doesn't. And, read all safety precautions and follow them.

I once visited a Domme in KC who used a Tens Machine on my cock and balls. I have never been involved in anthing that kinky before. The point that I was making when I said that the output of all TENS units is for practical purposes AC was that regardless of the input source. The unit works by "chopping" the power and the output, whether square-wave or sine-wave rises and falls, and is therefore for all practical purposes an Alternating Current output.

By the way has anyone ever experimented with a Mega Meter, thats what we call them in the UK - a Meter for checking insulation that has a handle you crank. When I was an apprentice many years ago we used to get unsuspecting saps to hold a couple of wires, which led back to a Mega when the sap took hold of them the person with the Mega would crank like blazes, whilst we fell about laughing as the sap's hair stood on end.

By the way the human body adapts to electrical shocks - the skin reduces its conductivity by getting dry. Feel any electrician's hands.
