What do you think about Cloning?

I can see the benefit it cloning body parts but I don't think science would be willing to just stop at that. I'm not even convinced that someone hasn't already tried to clone a human or is in the process of doing it now.

The human genome project...being able to take out what's bad and only produce 'perfect' humans...is this the best idea?

Oh the world loves a clone...

Nothing but problems and morality issues... if you clone them, are they considered people then? Do they have rights? Are are they to just be used for organ harvest? More problems there than in a math book.

Send in the clones:) . Seriously, though, it's ok to try to recreate body parts but not to create a person to hack up as a spareparts bin.

Human cloning has occurred since pre-history. We call them identical twins & give them the same rights as other people, only twins have to share more...

The Human Genome Project is a matter of mapping every part of the puzzle, not re-designing it, although it will hold that door open.

Just because something is missused doesn't mean it shouldn't exist.

Here's a thought for you- Human evolution has halted because of our abillity to adapt the environment rather than change with it.

We treat all manner of disease rather than develop an immunity to it.

We make eyeglasses, contact lenses & new corneas for people with bad eyesight.

In other words, the less fit survive, too.

Correct me if I'm wrong but are you actually suggesting that an identical twin is essentially the same thing as a clone?

Nice thread, my opinion is cloning isn't quite right. To me every person is unique almost like a snowflake, GOD made it that way so maybe he knew what he was doing. I understand missing someone because they left us way too quickly but doing a lot of cloning seems like it might lessen the beauty and mystery life has always provided. A movie I enjoyed (although it was kind of explicit) was American Beauty, birth and death are equally important especially when you've helped others as much as possible during your time on earth.

The whole point of the project, as I understand it, is that once it's mapped out the 'bad' genes can be manipulated to not exist anymore. ie: cancer, diabetes, etc. Otherwise, what would be the point of going through all the work???

Stopped evolving? We stopped evolving? Fascinating, I guess I didn't get the memo.

I am pretty much for it. I can't see the harm in it, because it is really not like we are talking about a bunch of mad scientists making four assed donkies with the knowledge.

I think it can only improve the quality of life for people, but I worry that it will remain so costly a concept that it will be available to only priviliged people.

I hope it can be made to be rather inexpensive and so that people all over the world can recieve what they need.

I am sure there are others who need it more than me, but you can put me down for a new stomach and intestines when ever someone gets around to it.

I think the issue of cloning is a very complex one. And a subject I only know a little about.
For me personally it raises a lot of questions. Cloning body parts seems practical and could save a lot of people's lives.

Cloning people? Would they be capable of reproducing? Would we want them to? What would their place be in society? Like would we consider them human beings or a harvestable resource of body parts? Slaves or free people? Would they be capable of free thought and live their lives as we do or need constant direction? It is very thought provoking and kind of scary.

It'll be a fad until......

They discover a way to transfer personality/memory to the clone upon maturation. Imagine casting off your old body for a fresh, genetically pure, exact replica! You have one created about the same time you'd have kids (21-35), wait for it to become mature (18yrs), and have a big party, followed by your "transferrence." Your old shell would be recycled for parts, and you'd continue with your life as if nothing happened.
The only drawback is if you don't choose wisely with your education, you could be working retail for a thousand years! :D

*Actually, I like the "system" the way it is now, be here for a useful period, then go. (as long as I take the dirt nap before I get put in a home.) :D

In general I enjoy your posts P1. Not that you or anyone else gives a hoot what I enjoy

Yes. I'm making the point that from a genetic stand point, the material on the shell of the donor egg not withstanding, they are essentially the same.

Identical twins are genetically identical. ( & I believe both twins have souls, too.)
Clones are genetically identical.

That's all.

*bump* I think I will go do some research. An interesting topic.

I think cloning is wrong...I think we really need to start relying on our physical strengths and weakness' to let society play itself out. Then again I am a big fan of Darwin.
