Dr. Sarah Travis
Age: 28

*****
Shock.

So this was utter shock felt like.

It kinda sucked.

Sarah looked down at the little stick she held in her hand and for the umpteeth time, had to make sure it read as it did.

Positive.

Positively...absolutely...no going back...pregnancy.

How did it happen?

Well, how it happened should be obvious... but the timing... it was all wrong... she was only 29, she still had a lot she wanted to do in life. Her career was just starting and well, life was just beginning! Yet, here she stood, pregnant and single...

What about the father? Oh God, what was his name? She remembered what he looked liked..sorta... but his name, she didn't know exactly.

The plus side was that she knew he was a cop... or a firefighter... something for the city, that was for sure..sorta...

God, how the hell was she going to explain this to her parents.

* * * *

As she walked to work, Sarah's mind was racing. How the hell could this have happened? They had used protection right?

Duh Dr. Travis...not all contraceptives are 100%...

Huffing a breath, Sarah's mind went back to that night.... she had gone out to dinner with some friends and they all ended up at some small bar...

“Come on Alex buddy try and have some fun”

Alex calmly gave his partner the middle finger and turned starring at his beer and willing I to give him all of lives answer. His large calloused hands pulled and twisted at the ring on his left finger moving it up a few inches to take it off before firmly mashing it back down again. How many times had he done this? How many times had he sat in his apartment starring at it and wondering what to do?

It had now been three years since his wife had died of cancer. His wife used to joke all the time about getting a call one day saying her hot shot up and coming police officer of a husband had been hurt in the line of duty but it was HE who got the call when he was out on patrol that she hadn’t made it through the night. Alex should have known it was coming, should have listened to all the doctors telling him it didn’t look good but he was a catholic boy at heart and clung to the belief that god wouldn’t have taken her from him.

Little did he know

“It’s been three years Alex I know it sucks but-“

“But what?” Alex shot back turning to glare at his friend “I should just get over it? You may not know this but it isn’t exactly easy to get over losing the love of your life”

“I know buddy” Tim said looking nervous “but do you really think Amelia would have wanted this for you? You basically don’t do any thing but work and go home I know your upset still but you need to move on for your own sake”

Move on

It was so simple when he said it but didn’t he know Alex had tried time and time again? He hated being this upset and miserable but no matter how hard he tried he couldn’t get Amelia out of his mind. She haunted his dreams and every though filtering in and out of his conscience over and over again. No matter how hard he tried to push her away she kept coming back in flooding him with painful memories.

“Fine” Alex said suddenly angry, he didn’t know if it was himself or his partner but the anger fueled him enough to get him off of his seat “you want me to move on” He hissed narrowing his eyes at his partner.

“You got it”

He turned towards the main bar and narrowed his eyes intent on going to the first woman he saw and flirting with her. He could feel his wife threatening to burst out of the edge of his mind and instead looked himself over to make sure he looked half way presentable. He had on his usual black pants and matching button down t-shirt and both were fitted to his body to show off his impressive physique, he was a tall man a little over 5’9 with deep tan skin and a muscular body from the police force, his face was handsome and sharp defined by hard beautiful lines, his eyes however were the most captivating feature electric green and sparkling with a storm like intensity.

He reached the bar and gently reached out tapping a beautiful blonde girls shoulder. Alex didn’t know what to say but he was surprised when one of his favorite old “lines” came back into his head the one he had used to pick up his wife all those years ago.

“Excuse me” Alex said trying his best to look and sound charming “I just wanted to come over here and say you were the most beautiful woman in the bar and I really mean that” he said leaning against the bar as he spoke “I would love to buy you a drink but even if I cant I just wanted you to know how stunning you are”

Good God, there was a reason Sarah didn't go out with her friends from high school anymore. They still thought they were in high school and acted so immature at times. They were the only group in the bar that was laughing loudly and embarrassing Sarah...

With a shake of her head, she needed to get away from them, so she picked up her drink and headed over to the bar to take a breather...

She was nursing her 3rd cocktail, which put her to the point of being a little tipsy, when she saw someone walk up beside her by the reflection of the mirror behind the bar.

In all truths, Sarah wasn't looking for anything tonight except a good time with her friends... but seeing as how that was in the crapper now, she was open to what ever happened..

When he spoke, Sarah couldn't help but smile. She heard lines before from men but very few meant it. She turned to look at the man...look up really, and nodded to the man and waved to the seat beside her, "You don't have to buy me anything..just have a seat and keep me busy so I don't have to go back over there.." she said, looking in the direction of the group of women, still laughing it up.

Alex looked over at the direction she was nodding at and a rare smile crossed his stubble lined chin. He knew a little some thing about annoying fiends and it was nice to know he wasn’t the only on e in the bar looking for an escape. Maybe this would be the night he got over his wife…. Or at least found some comfort in the arms of some one else.

“I may not have to buy you any thing” Alex said sitting down next to her and turning the bartender “but I still think I owe you a drink for your time” he said to her before quickly ordering her the same drink she had in her hands. He decided not to have another beer and instead turned starring at her while the bartender made her a drink.

“My name is Alexander Stone” Alex said holding out his hand to hers “I really meant what I said by the way about you being the most beautiful girl in the bar I’ve been trying to resist the urge to stare at you all night” he said joking before he inwardly winced.

It sounded slightly creepy

………

Alex groaned and opened his eyes vaguely aware that A. He didn’t know where he was at and B. He felt like he was more drugged then a Elephant.

What the hell happened to him?

“Hey buddy don’t move” Tim said coming up to him and looking concerned “you got into a accident nothing to serious but you got wounded in the shoulder your at the hospital”

“I” Alex said frowning as he winced from the wound “I don’t know what happened” he murmured closing his eyes and feeling the wooziness effect him.

“Its okay buddy the doctor will be in just give her a second”
