Aubrey Daniels

It had been a little over 4 years ago when it had all happened. I had been kidnapped at the age of 14...when this all went down, my nanny was killed right after they had taken out Jacob...the body guard assigned to watch over me.

Jacob was great. He was a lot nicer than the others that had been assigned to me...he was young for a guard. Almost like the big brother I never had...

I hadn't known the whole story back then but according to others, he fought hard to get me back...my hero. He took on those that got me and rescued me from them. Putting his life in danger just to save mine.

My father was grateful for all that Jacob had done but when he recovered, he let him go.

That was the last time I had seen him.

Now, 4 years later, I was 18 and had gotten in contact with Jacob..well, his secretary really. Seemed he was a very busy business owner for a security firm. I wanted to meet him...most of all, I wanted to show him how much I had grown since he had last seen me... I wanted to thank him properly.

Jacob McAllister had been an officer once, but that was when he still believed in the law. He’d been a bodyguard once, but that was when he believed in people. Now he ran a security corporation and believed in nothing. Men in sharp suits sat on both sides of a long board room table, all staring intently at Jacob.

“The most important thing is the safety of your charge. Not your employer and not yourself. You need to value that life, that safety above even your own, this is what we are paid to do.” Jacob adamantly told the group of field agents. The “Personal Protection Division” was just one of several branches of the McAllister Security Contracting Agency, but it was the one Jacob always took the most interest in. “We’ve stocked you with the best equipment and support staff in the industry, but ultimately none of you should depend on us or the systems we provide. It’s up to you to keep your charge safe.”

It was part of Jacob’s legend, his adamant approach to protection, that by-any-means-necessary attitude which had earned him the reputation which formed the foundation of his company. Ever since he took six bullets trying to reclaim a charge after she’d been abducted in a highly organized strike by well-equipped operatives. The police had never given any explanation that satisfied Jacob, but his ability to protect Aubrey was severed when he was politely let go by her father.

The handsome severance package helped a lot with the founding of his Securities Empire.

Jacob’s impassioned speech was interrupted by the light, resonant knock of his secretary, Gillian, on the glass door of the conference room as she poked her head inside.

“Sorry to interrupt Mr. McAllister, but I just had a lovely conversation with Aubrey. She wanted to schedule an appointment with you tonight. Your schedule has an opening, but I thought I should ask you first. Should I call her back?”

“Aubrey? Aubrey who?” Jacob asked abruptly, slightly irritated at being interrupted in the midst of his orientation speech. “I don’t remember meetings with any—“

“Aubrey Daniels, Sir. You have her picture on your desk.” Gillian said softly, feeling slightly foolish now for interrupting. She’d thought for certain that he’d be glad to hear from her. “Aubie…”

Color flooded into Jacob’s face, suddenly humiliated that he himself had forgotten about the charge who changed his life, who he’d nearly died trying to rescue, the life saved that he’d built his legend on. He was also embarrassed at having the fact that he still kept her 7th grade photo on the desk in his office, with a big smile of braces, long awkward neck and crystal blue eyes so full of hope, broadcast in front of this fresh crop of tough-guy subordinates. A few were whispering amongst themselves.

“Yes, of course. Call her back and schedule it, that’s fine. Just please don’t interrupt me again unless it’s an emergency. Thank you.” Jacob said sternly, dismissing the secretary and turning back to the room full of recruits. “You two, whispering twins. I took six bullets for that girl. How many have you taken in the line of duty? How many between you? When you take a close range shot in the gut and still manage to shoot your way out with a 14 year-old on your back then you can weigh in on my relationship with that girl. Until then, get the fuck out of my building. You’re fired, go cut your teeth somewhere else, you sad sacks. Don’t expect a reference from me. Dismissed.”

Jacob pushed bodily through the glass door, taking his secretary by her arm and nearly dragging her back to his corner office which occupied the majority of the top floor of the McAllister Trust Building.

“Don’t you ever embarrass me like that again. Understand?”

Aubrey stared out the window of the plane, where the seat belt sign had been activated no more than 5 minutes ago, as the plane started it's descent toward the airport.

For the past hour she had thought nothing of this meeting she was to have with Jacob. She had received word from his secretary about meeting him tonight. After the confirmation, the arrangements had been made at the Wilshire Hotel restaurant, also the same hotel Aubrey would be staying at.

She was nervous, that was for sure. But she needed to push pass it. This was Jacob, after all. She owed him so much for saving her..for putting his life on the line for her. She never had the chance to thank him that night... she had wanted to see him in the hospital..had wanted to see him when he left.

He left.

According to her father, Andrew Daniels Sr., it was Jacob's choice to leave. He didn't like the danger and there was a possibility he hated Aubrey for what she had put him through.

That had hurt so much to hear.

But in the end, it all wasn't true.

Aubrey confronted her father about it all, he finally admitted to her that Jacob failed at his job and let the whole thing happen! It had started a big argument between father and daughter.

Since then, it had been nothing but hatred between the two. When Andrew sent Aubrey off to a boarding school over seas, she didn't fight it. She welcomed it. The farther she was away from him, the better.

But now there was no more Jacob, Aubrey went through a slew of bodyguards. None she dared get close to again. Besides, none of them really cared about her the way Jacob did. Even though he was tough to those around him, when it was just him and Aubrey, he changed...showed her a softer side... the side she was sure not many had seen.

It was a lot for a teenager to take in but she did, nonetheless.

"We'll be landing in 5 minutes Ms.Daniels." Came the voice of the captain through the over head. It shook Aubrey out of her day dreaming and thoughts of the past.

“Yes Mrs. Williams I’m absolutely certain it was just a squirrel. You’ll remember that I warned you about this when you asked that the outdoor motion detectors be linked to the—“ Jacob said wearily into the phone for what felt like the eightieth time. “I’m absolutely certain, because I’m looking at the view from your exterior security camera. I’m looking at the squirrel right now; he’s moving again… there he goes.”

Once again, Mrs. Williams’ system went red, indicating an intruder was in the house. Jacob moved quickly to cycle the system into “All-Clear” mode. When he was finally able to reassure Mrs. Williams that no one was trying to storm her exceptionally well protected home, and that her personal security detail was not involved in any plot against her, Jacob slammed the phone down on his desk, letting go of a long sigh.

“Sorry to bother you again Mr. McAllister, I just got word that Aubrey Daniels’ flight is on its final approach. Would you like to send a town-car?” Gillian muttered softly from the door, her eyes averted nervously. “I waited until you were finished with the client call.”

“Mrs. Williams’ calls you can interrupt, in fact I’d prefer it.” Jacob groaned, rubbing the bridge of his nose with thumb and forefinger. “Yes, send a car, please. And make sure that the driver’s one of ours. I’m sorry about earlier, I didn’t mean to—“

“Yes, Sir. I’ll get right on it.” Gillian muttered defensively, her hand coming over the place on her arm where he’d grabbed her and left finger shaped bruises behind, like tiger stripes. “After that, would it be alright if I went home? Your dinner with Aubrey is set for 8:30 at the Wilshire.”

“Dinner! I—“ Jacob started, causing Gillian to flinch and gasp noticeably. “…I’m sorry, dinner is fine. Go on home, thanks for your work today.”

After a slight nod, Gillian was off, taking hurried steps on her high heeled stilettos, echoing over the marble floor toward the elevator. Moments after she’d left, Todd the CFO and all around accounting whiz poked his head in.

“Ready to sign some checks, boss? It’s payroll time again.”


Andrew was grinding his teeth, visibly shaking with rage from behind his massive mahogany desk, glaring daggers at Andy Jr. who had allowed his half-sister to slip through his fingers at this most pivotal moment in their life.

“How do you know she’s going to him? How would she even know where to look?” Andrew asked, trying to mediate his uncontrolled anger with limited success. “She hasn’t gotten access to the trust yet.”

“She used the credit card, that’s how I know she’s going to LA.” Andy muttered faintly, visibly wary of his father’s wrath. “We still have a few months to—“

The younger Andrew was cut off by the loud smash of his father’s fist striking the desk in between them, the impact was enough to tip a small cup of pens over and bloody the older man’s knuckles. He rose from his seat, beside himself with rage.

“She’s gone! In the goddamn wind, and you have the nerve to insinuate that time is on our side! Worse yet, she’s flying across the goddamn country on MY credit line. You stupid little shit! We’re going to have to contract this out now, that is expensive and we’re almost out of goddamn money. Not to mention that hired muscle could be bought off against us… Damnit you’ve fucked this up.”

“Look, I’m sorry, okay dad? She was supposed to come back here after school, how was I supposed to know she would change flights on a layover.”

“No more excuses. Pack a bag, we’re going to California.”


The gunshots echoed off of the boarded-up windows of the small cluster of abandoned apartments which had become the staging area for an organization of outlaws. With no ventilation, the gun-smoke curled heavy in the air, making clear red lines of the beams from the assault rifles upstairs.

“Give up, putah. You got no chance, you’re already bleeding bad!” The voice from upstairs shouted, laser sight trained on the bullet riddled counter Jacob had taken cover behind. “Give it up, we’re not hurting her.”

“Yeah, okay… I’m coming out!” Jacob bluffed, pulling the pin from a cylindrical flash-grenade. “Here I come.”

…tink… - Bla-da-da-da-da-da-da-da! Ba-da!!!

The moment that the hired goons saw movement, coming from behind the counter they’d opened fire. In the chaos they hadn’t noticed how close the silver can had bounced to their positions.

Ba-DOOM!

The impact smashed a hole in the floor at the foot of the stairs and knocked both gunmen flat on their asses. Jacob rolled over the top of the counter and easily dispatched the two blinded thugs. With a pistol in each hand, he dispatched them casually and simultaneously as he struggled to climb the stairs.

Behind him, Jacob’s blood left a clear trail where he walked. The recent wound in his chest had come open and he had new holes in his shoulder and leg to join it. At the top of the stairs, he slipped in his own blood and nearly tumbled back down them again. Nothing would stop him from rescuing her, not even death.

Through the rotted walls, he could hear her muffled voice, screaming and calling for him. “Jacob! Jacob! Ja-cob! Ja—

“Jacob!” Todd shouted, suddenly startling him awake from the lucid flashback. “Christ man, I know you find all this business stuff boring, but you could at least stay awake through profit reports. It’s your money, man! We grew 22% last quarter, this quarter we’re on track for thirty. You should be excited.”

“Yeah, that’s great. I’m just a little distracted. What time is it?”

“7:30” Todd replied after checking his watch.

“I need to get a shower.” Jacob said, sitting upright and stretching. “I’m running late now, I hate being late. Damnit! Todd, email me those reports as an attachment, I’ll be ready to talk about them in the morning.”

Jacob left Todd there, sitting at his desk while Jacob went into his private bathroom, lined in black marble. The door shut with an audible click and a light over an access panel beside the door changed from green to red.

Not many people liked Andrew Daniels Sr.

Especially his own employees.

But everyone seemed to love Aubrey. Just like they loved her mother.

Aubrey remembered her mother so much. During that first year after her passing, Aubrey cried herself to sleep every night.

Her mother had always been there for Aubrey. Until that night. The night the entire staff had been awake...pacing, talking amongst themselves and stopping their whispers when Aubrey approached. The sad look in their eyes as they watched the next heir of "Intuit Solutions" ask for her mother.

No one had the heart to tell Aubrey that her mother was dead.

Killed when her car went over the side of a cliff on the road that led up the house. She had been on her way home from a dinner party, which her father had also attended but hadn't been in the car and had decided to stay and talk with some business associates afterward...

Andrew didn't take it to heart. In fact, his grief never seemed to surface. Even when he told Aubrey, who at 13 years old, that her mother was dead.

Just like that.

......after her mother's funeral, her father's disdain seemed more present than ever..especially after the reading of the her mother's will. A will which read that Aubrey would inherit Intuit Solutions' fortune at the age of 19....

Then things started to happen.

At first, they were little accidents... mostly explained that she was just an awkward teenager...growing into her own... but it was more than that. At least one the many caretakers had seen and when she approached Mr. Daniels about it, she was immediately let go. Another person Aubrey had gotten close to and had suddenly lost.

It was then she had decided she wasn't going to get close to anyone again...ever!

That was until Jacob came along....

Dressed in a dark green cocktail dress, with her hair pulled back from her face, a small pair of emerald green stones hung from her ears, Aubrey waited for Jacob to show.

She had arrived at the reservation no more than 5 minutes late. But it was now about half an hour pass her meet time with Jacob and Aubrey was getting worried.

Had he backed out?

She wasn't sure but it had taken 2 glasses of wine to calm her nerves and as she was working on the third one, she glanced at the small delicate gold watch on her wrist, 31 one minutes past...

“Shit, shit, shit!” Jacob cursed, bashing the heel of his hand against the wood grain steering wheel of his Audi R8, “Goddamn, fucking Todd!”

Jacob hated being late, hated it more than anything on Earth. His business in particular revolved around timing. Timing was the difference between life and death, and the early always had the upper hand. The one who’s early gets to set the terms, gets to build the conditions—set the tone, as it were. He was always at least ten minutes early, had been since grade school. It was part of his legend! Now here he was, making her wait, Aubrey, who he’d exploited for his own gain, for the sake of his stupid, vain legend he’d exploited her pain. His own failure.

For what? Why had he done it? For money? For power, reputation, influence? None of that was anything to Jacob, yet she had earned it all for him. Aubrey. He’d abandon all of that shit in a heartbeat if he needed to…

This sort of high-level self-loathing was interrupted by the BluTooth alert on his hands-free system, the LED display across his dash alerted him that Cecily Webb was calling. Another thing he didn’t need, just as he caught a break in traffic and finally let his performance tuned engine uncoil.

The tires squealed around corners, he split lanes and cut across oncoming traffic in the last few blocks before he reached the restaurant. He’d forgotten his dinner plans with his girlfriend, and Cecily let him know exactly how she felt about it. His frustration was reflected in his driving.

Jacob’s tires squealed to a stop in front of the Hil, he tossed his keys to the valet as he rushed into the restaurant. Thirty minutes late, he felt like such a heel. But then, he saw her.

“Aubrey—“ His mouth sighed her name before he even realized he’d gasped.

Jacob just stood frozen, in the middle of the restaurant, his mouth hanging open and his eyes locked on the delicate, red haired beauty. Forgotten was the stress of the day, the anxiety of his lateness, even his broken promises to Cicely were all washed away in the white-noise that paralyzed him at the sight of her. Long gone were the braces, the lankiness that he used to joke made her “all knees-and-elbows”, sweet, innocent Aubie had become a woman since he’d seen her last.

The rest of the way to the table, Jacob moved like a concussion patient, feeling as though he were floating on air to meet her at the candle-lit table. He took her hand and pulled her against the front of his navy suit in a hesitant embrace, as if afraid she’d shatter in his arms if he squeezed to tight.

“Is it really you? My God, Aubrey. You’re beautiful.” He whispered lightly into her silken hair as their arms held one another.

"It's really me, Jacob!" Aubrey exclaimed and went on ahead and wrapped her arms around him, hugging him hard. "I didn't think I'd see you again.." she said, resting her head on the edge of his shoulder...probably a bit longer than needed but still, she was just happy to see him again.

Jacob's arms grew slightly tighter around Aubrey's middle and his eyes drifted shut. His nose inhaled deeply, drawing in the scent in her hair. "I'm so glad to see you doing so well."

At last, he released her, his large hands taking her gently by the shoulders, stepping back and looking deeply into her eyes for a long moment before kissing her cheek and moving to pull out her chair for her.

The wine had given her cheeks a rosey tint as she nodded a 'thank you' and took a seat, "I am doing very well, thank you..." as she leaned her arms on the table, "And you..It's so good to see you again. I'm glad you could make it...even it's half an hour late..." she said, in a teasing tone.

Pushing her seat back in after her, Jacob took his own seat, deftly unbuttoning his jacket as he sat. Her mention of his tardiness woke him abruptly from his stupor over how she'd grown. He paused, looking up with slightly ferocious eyes until he saw how playful hers were. Also slightly drunk from the look in them. He smiled genuinely. "I'm really sorry, burning the candle at both ends these days. My girlfriend got stood up all together." Jacob chuckled.

"Girlfriend?" Her interest piqued a little more. In her mind, she wondered what sort of woman would be able to tame Jacob... from what little she knew and remembered, that had to be one tough spirit of a woman.

"Oh, well, things come up...I mean, look at me, I stood up several guys just for you tonight.." She said, trying to sound serious.

A waiter came over and offered her a refill on her wine and of course, to take Jacob's drink order.

"So, Jacob, this is the final message tonight. Since you've not bother to pick up or attempt to call me back, you better be dying or dead!"

Cecily Webb was furious.

Every call she made to Jacob was went unanswered.

She hated that so much. Why was she putting herself through all this?! Jacob's job was his life. Which in turn, made Cecily a close second in his life.

Cecily had planned this dinner with Jacob for the past month. A night alone, a time to go out and have a night on the town and he bails...

And for what? Who knew.where the hell he was at. And to not bother to answer his phone.

Perhaps she just needed to go out on her own, find another man, bring him and make her forgot about this bullshit of a night.

Jacob's face flushed slightly, realizing how utterly foolish he must have seemed to her. Of course she had young men after her—just look at her! Who could resist those beautiful sapphire blue eyes, her vibrant red hair and that stunning figure—her skin looked smooth enough to ice skate on.

"Scotch, three fingers, neat." Jacob said resolutely, needing badly to regain his typical composure. Almost no one ever made him nervous like this... but this was Aubrey after-all. "And a New York strip, medium-rare. It really is so great to see you again Aubrey, I can't get over how beautiful you've become."

Instinctively, Jacob's hand lifted to the scar over his right cheekbone, a nervous habit he'd retained since being hit by a glancing bullet in his attempt to save her.

"May I have some water please?" She waved her hand at her face, realizing how warm it was all of a sudden. Of course she was joking about the dates, in all honesty, she never had a date, or even had a boy 'friend'—all thanks to her brother and father. They made sure of all that. "And the salmon and rice."

Once the waiter left, she turned her attention back to Jacob, noticing his scar and feeling bad about it. All that happened to him when he was with her was her fault.

At least that's the way she felt about it. Even her father had said so.

"It's great to see you again Jacob...I will admit I had the hardest time finding you.."

Her mention of having trouble finding him came as an odd surprise, and caused Jacob’s brows to knit as the waiter returned with his Scotch, and a pitcher to fill both water glasses. It was true there were times when it was important for him to vanish, to leave no trace—but lately it hadn’t been like that at all. In fact, he was getting far more attention than he was comfortable with. Forbes even ran a cover story on him last month… How long had she been looking?

“I haven’t exactly been hiding.” Jacob said softly, tilting his glass to his lips and taking a swallow of the potent liquor. “Your father made it very clear that under no circumstances was I ever to contact you again. He said you didn’t want to see me again—I get it, I mean… I let you get taken. I regret it every day. I just wish I’d had the chance to say goodbye. I’m glad that the last memory you have of me won’t be…”

Jacob trailed off, he didn’t remember much after he’d carried Aubrey out of the house, but when he woke up in the hospital he knew that she must have seen him in a bad way. It probably scarred her, internal and external scars. They were a matching set.

She had seen enough during the rescue.

It hurt to remember seeing him. The blood. There had been so much blood. But she was tough. She had to be, for his sake. All that happened was because of her. Many of the memories were suppressed but as of late, they've been coming up more and more.

How she begged her father to take her to the hospital to see Jacob. But it was always met with "No, you're a child! They won't let you see him!" Until finally, the asking had gotten on her father's nerves she surmised, because he had had enough, and slapped Aubrey across the face, telling her to “shut the fuck up” and that Jacob was gone...he was gone from their life and she would not see him again because of the poor job he had done.

Shaking her mind clear from the memory, "Please don't say that Jacob... " she reached over and placed her hand over his, "Besides, everything turned out good, right? You got your business going from what I've learned... please, let's not let the evening be filled with bad memories, it's been 4 long years since we've talked."

Jacob smiled, her touch awaking that youthful and reckless hope in him, so bygone from his current life that he’d almost forgotten what it felt like to really smile. Not for impressions or to make an attractive picture, to smile simply because he was happy. Her skin was soft and warm, it was like a rabbit had gently laid down across his hand.

“You’re right, of course.” Jacob smiled, laying his other palm over Aubrey’s hand in the space between them. “I mean, the business is good. The money is great, yeah. But it’s not like things were with you, I mean… I don’t feel like I’m doing good, I don’t know it like I did when I was watching you.”

Their food arrived before Aubrey could answer. She was extremely flattered that he thought of her in that way. That he remembered her. That was something she was afraid of, she would call his office and he'd decline seeing her.

As they ate, Aubrey filled him in on her life, on having been shipped off to Asia, for a while she hated the fact that she was so far away from her family but had gotten used to it after a while. How many guards she had gone through, some just local security, some literally off the street...although there were no more attempts on her life...

There were some things she did leave out. She didn't want to bring up how miserable she really was with her family...such as them not coming to her graduation... missing out on important events in her life...

"So, here I am... I decided to take a year off to just travel... since I'm old enough now, and then after that, enroll in college and from there..we'll see..."

Jacob smiled through dinner like some stupefied infant watching Sponge Bob, nodding at her stories, laughing at her jokes. She was an absolute delight. Maybe it was something about having saved her, extending her life, her potential and poise was like a sunset that never crested the horizon. She could be a model, a politician—she would make some man deliriously happy every day for the rest of his life, if there were any man on Earth capable of deserving her.

His steak was overcooked, but Jacob scarcely noticed. When she disclosed her desire to travel, his eyebrows raised.

“I have a jet. My VP has been telling me that I ought to take some time off.”

“Yeah cuz, I’m lookin’ right at her right now.” Sam repeated into his Blutooth headset, leaning against the wall of the upscale restaurant, peering through the window, barely noticeable from inside. “She’s with a dude. I can’t see his face, but I figure you know who it is. He doesn’t look like someone to try.”

“Goddamnit Sam! You were supposed to grab her before she met him. This should have been perfect! Damn you. Wait until he leaves, then move in. Don’t fuck this up again, you understand? Don’t forget that your brother’s parole hearing is next week.”

“Yeah, yeah, I got you. I’ll handle it.”

Not sure if he was serious or not, Aubrey could only smile, "Stop teasing me Jacob.." although she would love having him travel with her, it would be awkward in the sense that they were nothing but friends and he had a girlfriend and what would she say about it all? What if he brought her along... that would be so...odd. That and she didn't want him to think he had to keep watching her...

"Besides, I don't need protection anymore.."

They talked more but it was growing late and the restaurant all but cleared. Looking at her watch, Aubrey frowned, "Damnit..." she said, sighing, "It's getting late and I have to go early in the morning Jacob." She told him, not happy about it. She hadn't wanted the night to end but it was inevitable...all good things must come to an end.

"My flight leaves at 8am tomorrow morning..I hope if it's not too early, you can come see me before I go?"

Jacob almost interrupted, asserting that he wasn’t kidding, but that would have been a lie—wouldn’t it? Instead they talked of foreign countries where Jacob had been, and Aubrey was going—or had been at different times. How their paths had almost crossed, here and there, like ships passing in the night.

When she mentioned the late hour, Jacob reluctantly nodded weak assent. He would have loved to skip out with her, go wheels up on all of it—the business, Cecily, everything. Sayonara, suckers—I’ll watch you from my window seat. Upgrade Aubrey to business class with his air-miles, with those seats that reclined all the way flat…

“Yeah, it’s an early morning for me too. I’ll call the hotel at six, make sure you’re on schedule to make your flight. Hopefully I’ll be able to teleconference with Tokyo before your flight.” Jacob muttered, somewhat distractedly, not wanting to leave, but realizing he was foolish for even dreaming. Aubrey surely had her pick of men her age, what would she want with an older man like himself. “It was a really genuine pleasure.”

Jacob paid the check and stood up from the table, opening his arms for one last embrace, holding her firm, slender nubile body against his for what would be the last time, fingertips gently gliding over the exposed skin on her back. His lips touched her alabaster cheek, and he made his final farewells.

Outside, Jacob tipped the valet with a twenty as he rushed off to retrieve his car. It was hard to drive the image of Aubrey from his mind, how she’d grown into such a beautiful and graceful young woman, how he wished he could have watched her grow-up. Wellspring of regrets. So lost in his lamentations was Jacob, that he scarcely noticed the thug on his headset out of his peripheral vision. The thug seemed to be headed into the restaurant, in spite of his appearance and lack of dignified apparel. As Jacob’s car arrived and the valet handed off the keys, he caught the tail end of the conversation he was having.

“—Yeah I got it, I’m goin’ to get her now.” Sam said as he walked into the restaurant.

Jacob drove away, too distracted by his thoughts to consider what could happen, or who the ‘her’ this stranger could have been on his way to get.
