WRITING CHALLENGE ~ JANUARY 2014​

Here is the first challenge of 2014! Woo hoo! This challenge will run for the rest of the month and you have my sincere apologies that it didn’t start on the 1st but…better late than never!

And so, here are your prompts.


You can involve the prompts themselves in your piece and make your link to the prompts as obvious or as subtle as you like or use them simply as inspiration for something else. You can use part of the prompts, just one aspect of the images, or use them in their entirety.

As there are several prompts you can of course chose to use all of them in one piece or write one for each…again, it’s your writing, your challenge. You write whatever you’re inspired to write!

The word limit for this challenge is 2,014 words (*giggles*) and your submission can take whatever form you desire – poetry or prose, complete story or a vignette. Erotic or not, serious or light hearted, it’s whatever you want it to be!!

They are scary, yes of course, absolutely terrifying, but they are also alive. Stone to us, the only way we can ever see them, but they are more than mere stone inside. They are lonely, unloved, loathsome, feared creatures. Never to know what it is like to be looked on by another person, never to know the real touch of another. Perhaps that is why they weep.

She was among their numbers. How many of them, no one can really say, but among them was her. Perhaps she came out wrong, something a little off about her that made her crave beyond what the others of her kind did, made her into something more than a predator. Perhaps they are all like her, and she just couldn't hide it the way they could. It is impossible, really, to be an outcast when you belong to a species that cannot look at another of it's kind as they truly are, and yet she was. Many hunted in packs. She lived alone. Many depended on others, a sisterhood of blind dependence, but she only felt a stony coldness from them that she could not tolerate.

So she was alone. She moved among the humans, living in the space of a blink, watching them love each other and look at each other with no idea of the profound gift they had. Where they found love and affection, she felt only sorrow and isolation. Their joy became more than any creature could bear, and she found only one escape for it.

It was a one-way street, but these people in their sorrow unknowingly let her feel a sort of kinship with them. They had loved once, felt a touch and a closeness she would never know, but now they too only saw stone when they looked at the one they yearned for. Eyes closed, that person came alive to them, but a blink was a fleeting thing, a span of time all too short and gone all too soon, and when their eyes were open again that life was replaced with only a remnant of the person that had lived it. Maybe everyone turned to stone eventually, and she had just been too quick to get there. So fast she skipped over living, and went straight to the eternal end.

Time passed there in the graveyard, as it does everywhere eventually. Those that came to visit were soon turned to stone themselves, and others came to visit them. Flowers were left, tears were shed, seasons changed. She moved on her perch, of course, but never off of it. They were who she belonged near, this place her only real home. The need became great, the opportunity ample, but never would she, could she, send them from this vulnerable place so she might feed on their energy. She was growing weaker by the day, but it was no longer within her to visit more anguish upon those who were suffering so much already.

Eventually, just as those whose visits she so loved turned to dust and stone, so did she. Her window to watch them grew smaller and smaller, the blank stone periods longer and longer, until one day she joined them all. Silent, mute and no longer a danger, she was relegated to little more than a decoration that no one could quite remember being in that position in the past.

Her final undoing was a brutal winter storm, the drop in temperature foretold by a harsh wind that blew her from her pedestal and shattered her stone like so much glass. She stayed that way for nearly a week before enough clearing was done to discover her, and set her right again. But there was no longer a right for her. No memory of her was left behind, no smile brought to anyone's face at a thought of her. She had become like those that surrounded her.
