Man reports $55,000 in comics stolen

From Sentinel staff reports
Posted July 16, 2002

A comic book collection that took 40 years to amass and is valued at $55,000 was stolen from a storage facility, the Seminole County Sheriff's Office said Monday.

The theft was reported Saturday by Douglas Korinke of Moore Haven after employees of Public Storage, 2431 S. Orange Blossom Trail, near Apopka, discovered his storage unit had been burglarized.

Korinke told deputies that each of the estimated 35,000 comic books was sealed in a plastic sleeve and the books were packed in boxes.

Korinke said he built the collection, which included a first-edition of Spider-Man valued at $16,000 to fund his child's college expenses. He began the collection as a teen, paying $5 of his lawn-mowing money for the Spider-Man comic. The collection also includes a complete mint-condition series of X-Men and other hero comics, plus collectible copies of Playboy and Penthouse.
