The queasiness in Brooke's stomach was overwhelming but she had to give herself credit for acting like nothing was bothering her.
She was sitting in the Captain's office waiting for him to return from getting his morning coffee. Her business suit, fit like second skin and after all these months undercover, it felt like she was over dressed.
"Well, MacKenzie, how is it to be back after all this time?!" Captain Lewis' big voice boomed as he entered the office and closed the door behind him and made his way to his desk and set his cup down and looked at the woman before him. He had remembered when she had started as a rookie, and even back then there was something special about her. Oh, he didn't like her in that way, he thought of her more as a daughter than anything. "So, let's get down to it. You're back on the force in limited status due to the trial still pending for your work that you've done over these past months. That and the fact that he could still make bail but of course, that's up to the courts. And if he does make bail, you are out of here and straight into protective custody."
Brooke frowned. She didn't like where this was going. Of course she had known the risks of it all, but if 'he' was given bail, then her whole world was still not hers.
And if he found out about the child--his child, then of course, he would have an even better reason to get to her.
"I don't like it but I understand." She said through clenched teeth. Huffing a breath, Brooke stood up, "With limited service, does that mean desk duty only?" Of course she knew the drill. She had seen it many times before with other cops on the jobs. At least that gave her time to think of what to do next.
"Of course, dismissed MacKenzie."
Dismissed.
Sighing, Brooke stood up and left the captain's office. She was in no mood to argue nor was she in a mood to pretend to act friendly to her fellow officers. She just wanted to go back home, and spend another restless night thinking about what to do next.
