Nessa OBrannon
Student and accused Mafia Princess

The funeral turn out was huge, just as one would expect for a mafia don.

Nessa knew her father would approve. Even some of the press had been there..of course they had no respect as they tried to question Nessa and her brother JJ about their late father's mafia ties..

Of course, JJ, the only son of John OBrannon, had taken care of the reporters, protecting his little sister from them as he pulled her closer to his side and nodded for the bodyguards to take care of the questions.

Nessa had just celebrated her 18th birthday last week. Her father had been so proud of her that the party he had thrown was HUGE! It seemed like everyone who was anyone was there. It was even in the papers, although the headline was awful, "Irish Mafia Princess turns 18."

But Nessa didn't worry about it, she was too happy with her family and her friends...and then, not more than 2 days later, her father was shot down...then 5 days later, they were burying him. Nessa had not cried in front of anyone. She kept her tears in private. Or at the very least, with JJ present.

Her older brother JJ, also known as John Jr., was only 3 years older and had a lot going for him; a college senior, girls falling over themselves to get to him, always in the positive light in the society papers... much different than what the press liked to feed the public.

Now, they were left to fend for themselves..OK, Nessa made it seem more depressing than it was. There was their 10 bedroom home near the lake of upper state New York which was located on 50 acres of private property, secluded so they could still feel like a family. The family business, furniture, which was not up to Aiden to run. Secretly, Nessa knew he didn't want to but it was a popular business, well liked and had a good reputation.

Of course, there was another side that Nessa didn't want to believe...the side she never questioned was about rumors of the mob. Yes, there were rumors, yes her father had been arrested numerous times but no charges ever stuck.

Now, would the reality be a wake up call for Nessa?

John O'Brannon Junior had always known that one day he would be in charge of the family "business", but he hadn't expected the day to come so soon.

Regardless, he had been raised well, and knew what to do. The internal investigation into his father's murder he led himself; justice was meted out swiftly and brutally. It had been an inside job, a trusted cousin who had done the deed.

JJ handled the execution personally. The cousin's henchmen were hunted down as well, quickly, and a statement was made that was heard loud and clear across the underworld: John O'Brannon Junior was in charge of his house.

It was true he was young, but he had the resources and intellect to keep the family business running like the well-oiled machine it was. College was now out of the question, of course, but school was for children. He was a man.

Had it really been 2 months since her father's death?

Yes it had and Nessa was now out of school and looking forward to going to college in the fall. This summer, instead of going away, she would be staying at home.

'It's what's best Nessa...' her brother had told her. She hadn't questioned him why it was best, but she figured it was because they hardly had time to get to know each other when they were growing up and perhaps now, it was time to finally become brother and sister, instead of just of what just felt like housemates.

Nessa was disappointed that JJ didn't want to finish college but she understood why he did what he was doing. It was for the family business' sake.

So, for the summer at home, Nessa had it all planned. She would spend her days home riding the horse her father had gotten her for Christmas. She didn't want to travel too much outside of the property because there was still reporters lurking every where, just dying to get a picture, whether it be scandalous or not, of the family...

JJ felt bad for his sister. She had been kept sheltered from the realities of the family business. The rumors about mob ties were always dismissed as nothing more than rumors. Now, she was stuck at the family estate. JJ didn't have to leave much, either; the day-to-day parts of the business were handled by underlings, and he was kept updated daily.

At least they lived in a more civilized age for the mob. Open war between the families was a thing of the past; it was bad for business. There were a handful of armed guards around their estate, of course, just in case. Lurking reporters were a bit of an issue, but wealth brings on leeches.

JJ was in his study. It didn't really feel like it was "his" yet. It was still his father's. Michael Collins, his most trusted lieutenant, had just arrived. They sat down and shared a glass of scotch while Michael went over the daily updates.

"Oh, one last thing. Shipment arrived today. Thought you might want to sample the product," he said, and pulled a large bag of white powder from his briefcase and set it on the desk. "Primo shit," he said.

JJ smiled. He opened the bag, stuck a finger in it and took a sniff of the powder. "Yes it is," he said. "I assume the exchange went well?"

"Yes sir."

Dressed in her riding gear, Nessa walked down to the barn stables, hoping her horse was ready for her. She had instructed the new guy to have her horse, 'Jackie' ready for her at 1 P.M.

Thankfully, the horse was ready and Nessa was glad, she loved this time with just her and the surroundings of being alone. It was great. It gave her time to think about the past and also, just a place where she thought she could be free for a while...

Today she thought she'd try a new way around the property, near the end of the property line, a place JJ had said to never get too close to.

She had wanted to question him many times before but didn't think it was right. As old as it may have seemed to some, she had been taught never to question what the man in the family had told a woman. It was out of respect and of course, out of trust and loyalty.

As Nessa rode out a little further, she noticed something near one of the fences...someone in a car, smoking a cigarette... she frowned and rode up to the car and the man inside saw her and got out; he smiled at Nessa and raised a hand in greeting, "Hello Nessa." He said, matter of factly.

She had never seen him before and raised her guard immediately. Nessa dared not answer, instead, she backed her horse up a bit, "Who are you?"

"I'm Danny and I'm an agent with the FBI.. I thought we could talk for a while..."
