Because he had to hide the copy of the Half Blood Prince's potions book, he realised where Voldemort must have hidden one of the horcruxes. Dumbledore was a much more perfect being, and so he was led down the route to fascism. He wanted to do things for 'the greater good', he almost went into league with Grindelwald. He refuses to take up power, although he advises the Ministry, he refused to be Minister, because he knows he isn't to be trusted with power.

He didn't impress me when I lived in Gibraltar. The area of Spain around Gibraltar seemed like an occupied country because the locals had been on the losing side in the Spanish Civil War.

There were many refugees in Gibraltar who couldn't go back home, including our maid. Her husband had been a village Police Sergeant at the time of the war and was shot in the Police Station for being a representative of the Government. She was warned by a neighbour that the Fascists were coming for her and she fled to Gibraltar without her son who had been on a visit to her sister.

She finally met her son again in Tangier when he was in his 20s. With my parents' assistance to get temporary travel documentation, she could travel to Tangier, so could he, but they still couldn't meet in Spain.

As a child I had an unfortunate encounter with Franco's Guardia Civil. We were returning to Gibraltar from Malaga and stopped at an empty beach to have a picnic. It was a hot day so I went swimming even though the sea was fairly rough. But I didn't have a swimming costume so I was skinny-dipping. There was no one around but my parents so we thought there would be no problem.

Then the Guardia Civil turned up in a jeep. They objected to my bare bum 100 yards or so out at sea and told my parents that I would have to come ashore and get dressed. I couldn't hear my parents' shouts because of the waves.

The Guardia Civil opened fire with their jeep mounted machine gun to attract my attention. I heard, and saw that.

The Guardia fined my parents for my public nudity and for the cost of the ammunition they had fired. At the time the peseta was very low against the pound so the total cost was less than ten shillings (less than a US dollar). Once they had been paid they were more friendly but we left quickly.

Later my father learned through dubious channels that the Guardia Civil had reported firing on a suspected smuggler and the 'fine' had never been handed in. That was no surprise. Bribing the local Guardia Civil was necessary for locals and visitors in that part of Spain. Driving a Gibraltar registered car in Spain made you a target for routine 'checks' on its roadworthiness which it would fail unless you produced a few pesetas.

Well, I couldn't really say at the time because I thought you were ignoring me not lurking like a constrictor in the shadows, but I felt you might have mistaken Wright's target. He wasn't so much writing about the oppression of black people by whites, in my opinion, as the way in which someone wealthy and privileged could inadvertently make a total mess of someone's life even when they meant to do well by them. In a sense, Native Son is a classic Greek tragedy. It's the quality of mercy on the part of the white female character, which one would suppose was a virtue, not a fault, that leads to tragic consequences for all concerned. There's a paradox of humanity, we sometimes have to deal with the faults opened up by our virtuous behaviour.

I was up north at Zaragoza. I took my American girlfriend to a whorehouse on one occasion (the dinner discussion involved prostitution, and I challenged my companions to visit a brothel with me, to see for themselves). A good assessment of Naoko, James. And I have to agree with you on the righteousness of certain perfessers. But such righteousness isn't limited to academes, James; it seems an essential part of organized religion as well as most political philosophies. So it surprises me that you admired Franco and declare yourself a fascist. Or is it not a matter of righteousness at all, but rather a matter of disagreement with your own version of righteousness?

I don't think it's an eternal struggle, though; after all we do manage often to ignore each others' rants. And I'm not to sure that the 'gladiator arena' is the most appropriate metaphor; I'd much rather think of it as a traditional Greenlandic song duel.
