OP didn't come here asking if the topic were allowed, they asked about ways to describe race that wouldn't feel insulting to lots of the members of that race.

Or you could have just googled “Translation of Gaijen,” Stella. Yes, it can have negative “other than us,” even “inferior to us” connotations—more in the past than now (mostly in Japanese attitudes from the Russo-Japanese war period through WWII—when the big whammy explained to them that they weren’t superior). Don’t see a single “subhuman” definition or connotation, however. It would be more “inferior” because they aren’t Japanese than “less than human.” The Thomas Jefferson attitude I pointed to is what I think you were getting at, not the Gaijen meaning.

Not really. They are dying because they aren't placed where people now go looking for "news" and they don't have the immediacy as the media does where people now go looking for news. The basic "news" isn't any different in the current media choices than newspapers--just with a wider base of prejudice. My local TV station just regurgitates what the newspaper does; and the newspapers on-line services just regurgitate what will be in the print edition.

I ran into that usage when reading Spike Milligan's war memoirs.

In Australia it's shifted in meaning, and mostly means Greek/Italian and thereabouts. It used to be quite offensive, but in the last 30-odd years it's been largely reclaimed. One of my characters uses the term for herself; I haven't had any complaints so far.

But, what you should do, because I am totally an expert due to being on Literotica, is fold in characteristics so the reader figures it out without you giving the stats. That way you can let readers know if they are high yellow, ridge runners, sallow skinned city dwellers, or all the other permutations. At least, that's my two cents.
