Life in the 19th Century doesnt conform to the conventional wisdom about it, not when you come across the cracks that expose the reality. And they exist.
I was always curious about why anyone who paid lotsa money for a slave (a female slave cost about 3 years of wages back then) would abuse or kill their investment; they sure as hell didnt abuse or kill their animals, and horses/mules/oxen cost much less than slaves. The reality is this: For much of the 19th Century felons were hanged, no one went to prison as there were few prisons. Jails existed to hold people for trial, afterwards they hanged you. Slaves werent executed very often unless they murdered. They were whipped if the felony was a capital crime like rape or arson. They were sold if they were a chronic pain in the ass (my family sent them to our sugar plantations in South Florida) or shipped to isolated sugar plantations. Bullies, adulterers, child abusers, animal abusers, wife beaters moved on down the road.
What about old Massa fucking all the slave gals? Actually it was the other way round, plenty of white gals fucked the slaves. The colonial records are fulla court cases adjudicating the status of children born of Irish mothers and slave fathers. Ol Massa took his bizness to New Orleans and the Quadroon/Octaroon Creoles of the city. They were free. One of my ancestors came to America in 1782, married a gal who divorced his ass when she caught him fucking a biracial woman whom he married. We always wondered howcome my great grandmother was so swarthy. But they were rich and in the South it was ok to marry a pretty, free, black woman. Plenty of Southern gals took their male slaves to New York, to elope to Canada. The old papers are full of it.
Men like William Johnson of Natchez/New Orleans were wealthy planters, bankers, and business owners.
