Unintentional Affair
Basic premise:
Alice has been married to Charlie for a few years. A while back, she dated Bob for a couple of weeks, but they broke up mutually. Despite the break, they've managed to remain good friends (think Benson and Stabler from Law & Order: SVU). Charlie's not one of those "that guy blinked at my woman; I'm gonna kick his ass!" crazy-jealous types; he knows that they're friends, and is fine with it.
Anyway, Bob runs across Alice at some point, and she's obviously distraught. During their conversation, it turns out that she and Charlie had a very epic-scale blowup with each other. They're not splitting up; it was just a fight. Nevertheless, Bob is there for emotional support.
Bob offers to let her crash at his place for the evening, and they end up sleeping together. Neither of them intend for it to happen, but sometimes these things happen. (NOTE: I don't really have the details ironed out; but I know that Bob's not taking advantage of Alice).
A couple of notes:
* This isn't Alice's attempt at a Jealousy Plot to get her husband back; i.e., "If he sees me with another man, he'll admit his real feelings!"
* Bob and Alice both do feel regret about it later on. Perhaps Charlie finds out, and Bob allows him to get a free punch in, or whatever.
But I'm just spitballing here. Any other suggestions/variations?
