He Hired Her to Kill Him
P is distraught. In his fifties, his wife is dead (or left him?). His kids have moved away. His business is failing. The only asset he has left is a hefty life insurance policy. He figures if that pays out to his kids, they will finally realize he loves them. but it does not pay in the event of suicide.
He recruits a "hit man" through a "mercenary" magazine. Except the hit man is a woman.
As she trails him, looking for the perfect chance to kill him and have it look like an accident (double indemnity), she notices how kind he is to store clerks, little old ladies, even how he pets dogs... and then she realizes she is falling in love...

don't know what's on Lit, but Lawrence Block has an excellent hit man series of books. Thomas Perry also did one or two before his Jane Whitefield novels, and returned to that character recently. .

Damn, Sirhugs. I like it. Got my juices going on this one, so many possibilities...
If I didn't have about 20 stories in the works, I'd start writing now, but if I keep the Two Moms, Two Laps readers waiting any longer, I'm afraid they're going to hunt me down.
I may give this a try in a couple of weeks if I can get my backlog under control.
Thanks for a great idea.

How's this for a twist:
Having fallen in love with the mark, and wanting to be with him if only for awhile, she somehow convinces him that the best way to arrange the murder is for them to fake being in a relationship for awhile, and then have a fatal domestic "accident" (or establish a pattern of having kinky sex, and then for something to go "wrong").
Of course, human emotions being the weird creatures that they are, the "fake" relationship begins to affect the mark in much the way a real one would; he's happier and has more confidence. This in turn leads to his business picking up, women start noticing him again, and in general his life improves, to the point that he doesn't want to die anymore. Which leaves him with a dilemma; not realizing her actual motivations, he assumes that she's just really dedicated to her job, the kind of dedicated killer you see in the movies who won't break a contract even if the hit gets called off.
Cue wacky hijinks and eventual happy ending when they both realize they actually share the same goals.

I like sirhug's original idea and Shendude's variation, though I DO think that if their fake relationship is getting real, he would surely ask her at some point if she would cancel the contract if he asked her. Unless she's got a boss higher up, there's no reason for her to hold to a code of going through with the killing when the only person that knows that she's going back on her contract is the one who hired her.

I would assume that he cannot cancel the contract; it has gone through too many layers. And if she doesn't kill him, she will be in heap big trouble with her organization.
So their only recourse is to fake both of their own deaths. That way the kids still get the money, and the two happy lovebirds get to move to some banana republic with new identities and live horny ever after.

She fakes his death with a gas leak takes a body from a morgue and they run off to Latin America.
-take half the money, give the rest to the kids.

The only way that works is if the kids are in on the plot. Insurance companies don't generally give half the money to the corpse and the corpses killer and the other half to the next of kin.

In fiction, you all the time find Hitmen with a "code" that requires them to carry out a job, even if the job is called off.
This is ridiculous of course, but it's a common enough trope that Our Hero could assume that such a dedicated killer would follow it.

Another twist could also be that the Hitwoman doesn't know that the mark is also the one who hired her.
She could approach him with the domestic plan and he panics when he realises it's the Hitwoman. Or he doesn't even know that.
There are so many damned angles here you could write half a dozen stories.

There was an actual case of this in the news recently: the woman coated her snatch with poison to kill her boyfriend, then asked him to go down on her. He noticed first a strange flavor, and second that she had passed out! Dumb bitch didn't realize her pussy would absorb the poison faster than his tongue would. He rushed her to the hospital and saved her dumbass life.
