When you get to the United States, chain yourself to a 1964 Chevy Impala.

Savoy Hotel on Geary had a neat little bar and restaurant a while back. About three blocks off Union Square. Walk up to Chinatown, or to North Beach area for Italian food. I'd stay away from Fishermans Wharf, tacky and touristy. Over the Golden Gate to Sausalito, a great little town on the Bay.

The Equinox restaurant in Embarcadero Plaza gave me a memorable meal twelve years ago. Well, not gave to me. They charged $100 for the lamb chops.
They're closed now, but you might find their chef in the neighborhood.

Try Harris the San Francisco Steak House or the Zuni Cafe. There's good seafood joints down on the Wharf as well.

Do you want to stay in SF only or how far do you want to venture? Get a rental and drive Rt. 1 south, it's a beautiful drive and the kind you see photographers with really expensive equipment snapping...
They say Mission district is great but it's super gay for my tastes (that's somewhat hippieish). There is the Marina area which is really nice. Golden gate park is cool and *spark* from memory the really hippie place is just south of golden gate park... on gmaps i wanna see judah st. and 19th.
Go see nob hill of course (postcard) and then check out fishermans wharf.
Thinking of more stuff in the realm of food or just experience in general...
Also just to the northwest 1h is Napa which is awesome

Vetteman reminded me, sry to hijack bud but Scoma's is an excellent seafood place if you're Ok with price. You'll see pictures of all the stars that dined there including Arnold, Rocky, and Sinatra.

We stayed right downtown. There was 50 different places to eat within 2 blocks. It was very diverse pickings. Most places have their menus on their windows. Walk until you find something interesting.

Some good advice
You've received generally good advice LIAR. I live in Sf and it's hard to go wrong ifyou follow what you read here. One thing however, don't expect to see any seallions. There is no animal by that name living in the bay area ... there are plenty of SEA Lions though.
Have fun.
