Podcast Swap

What'cha listenin' to?

I listen to hours every week and I look forward to a lot of them. Looking for funky, funny, informative podcasts. Some of my favorites:

Caustic Soda: These guys pick a subject every week...whether it's Zombies or Improvised Weapons or whatever, they pick something and do some research on it and are always funny and I learn stuff. Can't drink while listening or there will be soda through the nose.

Skeptic's Guide to the Universe: Skeptic news from a panel. Focus on debunking and activism and promoting critical thinking. Good stop for science news, and one of my favorite segments is "Science or Fiction" where four "news" items are presented and you have to guess which one is the fiction.

TED talks: Talks from the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conferences. Lots of subjects, progressive and earnest, not necessarily funny, but inspirational.

Freakonomics Radio: Smart, funny and counter-intuitive thought provoking economists.

QuackCast: Debunking of medical scams. Extra snark.

Radiolab: Good, informative real stories that can be funny and moving and well crafted.

Book Review: Sam Tannenhouse from NYTimes book review, interviews and listings.

ITunes University: Lots and lots of talks, my favorite series is Science and Cooking from Harvard, excellent guests and lots to learn. Stanford Law, Grand Rounds, Neurology...lots of good classes. Not funny or funky, but definitely all informative. Did you know that there's a protein called "Sonic Hedgehog?" I didn't until I listened to one of these podcasts on neurology.

In Our Time: BBC program recommended by SeanH. Unbelievably obscure panel discussions on stuff I'd never hear about otherwise. Grab bag of what you're going to hear about. The obscure-er, the better.

What'cha got that I can try out?

This American Life. I Ira Glass. He first introduced me to David Sedaris and Sarah Vowell. If you listen to Radiolab, I am sure you know TAL. My all-time favorite Radiolab was the episode where they featured the guy who went from nerd to cool by changing the part in his hair, then he sent a letter to Jimmy Carter encouraging him to do the same. And he did. Fun stuff.

Diane Rehn Show, she does great interviewing. So does Terry Gross on Fresh Air.

Wait Wait Don't Tell Me is fun.

I do know This American Life, but I didn't podcast it, now I will.

I think the most riveting Radiolab I'd listened to was the guy who was in the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, and after that all he wanted to do was go home...to Nagasaki...oh...Gods...

I'll queue 'em all up, thanks!

Got 'em, thanks!

I've heard enough about Savage Love that I should have been subscribed by now...this is why I need lists like this.

marc maron - wtf

to get the true significance of it, though, you have to listen to the first 20-25 episodes.

If anyone is using iTunes, a search of 'Radio 4' will list all podcasts available.

You gave me Caustic Soda already and thank you for that.

Econ Talk is one of my favorites. Today he talked to an organic farmer about the business of running an organic farm. Last week it was about reading F A Hayek.

Also, Dan Carlins Hardcore History. It isn't updated often but when it is the show is long and informative and with different takes on historical events.

Caustic Soda is my favorite. Today I listened to their "Pestilence" episode and they mentioned Matt Frewer in "Supernatural" and my favorite book "Good Omens." Bonus! "We'll be back when the week is through and we'll have more gross facts for you."

I'll check those out!

Oh and the Thomas Jefferson Hour. Guess what that is about?

And just for the record, EconTalk is a lot more interesting than it sounds.

He was a comedian on the verge of a nervous breakdown. His career had all but tanked. He started podcasting as a Hail Mary Pass.

For the first 6 months, at least, it sounded like he was using his guests as foils so that he could analyze himself on the air. (He interviewed his therapist once, if I recall correctly.)

He's almost a hot shot now. On much firmer ground. Always has interesting guests--lots of but not exclusively stand-up comedians. The meaty part to me, though, is following his self-discovery,

I'll check those out. Maybe not Car Talk. Just a few weeks ago I was subjected to their show and I begged Ulaven to turn it off. They were telling some joke about the nature of nagging women. I never heard anything about cars.

Finally got a chance to listen to yesterday's episode. Brilliant and funny!

Thank you so much for introducing me to it.
