Harry Potter brought in record crowds for Universal, and I'm sure Disney wishes they had the rights, but it didn't kick Disney's ass.

He caused a down year for them. Or what passes for a down year for them. They admitted it when the numbers were released.
It's true Disney doesn't release numbers themselves but they don't argue with the ones that are because they're accurate. Disney belongs to the group that does it.

There was also a worldwide recession going on.

More people visited any of Disney's parks than Islands of Adventure that year.
