How to write an erotic story

Hi there. I have just posted a story request/confession to the "Story Ideas" section and was told I should write my own story but I don't know where or how to start. It took me ages just to write my thread the idea of composing a full blown piece of fiction is quite daunting.

How should I go about starting my story, how long should it be, where should I post it on this forum and are their any other places for me to find an audience for my story?

Sorry for all the stupid questions. I hope someone can help.

You should start writing your story by starting to write your story. I realize that sounds very self-obvious, but a journey of a thousand words begins with a single step. Put down your first word and go from there.

Looking at the thread you started, it's close to being a story as it is. So, to make things easier, the first thing you should do is copy-paste that whole thing into your document. Then just go line-by-line, adding details, fleshing out, things like that.

Starting is always the hardest part. Revision is easy, because you're just tweaking what's already on the page. Vision is difficult. Have patience and don't demand of yourself that the story be perfect from the get-go. If you need help, read more--read new stories, read old favorites. Make note of the language they're using, the words or phrases that you like. Stealing from one person is called plagiarism, but stealing from everyone is called research.

Where should you post it on the forum? Nowhere. You should go to the Literotica site proper, sign up for a membership account, and submit your story through the moderators for publication on the site. This forum has nothing to do with that process. People contribute here who have never published a story; people publish stories who don't come here.

That's about all I've got. Hope it helps.

Here is my story site, which has more material on it than my Literotica page. Oh, and, I'm now on Facebook!

Hi, lukeyboy1974. Welcome to the community.

My post may be lengthy, but I will do my best to answer your questions.

Congratulations on your interest in writing erotic fiction.

First, I think it's important to understand the difference between a porn story and an erotic story. They both include sex, but an erotic piece is more plot driven. There are conflicts and characters to develop. These things are important in an erotic story because you want your reader to connect with your characters and with your story. That's not to say that there is no place in the world for porn stories, there is...and some people would rather just "get right down to business" and not bother with a detailed plot and character relationships.

Because erotica branches off into so many genres, it can be overwhelming as to where to start. My advice is to start here, on this very site. The main page offers an ocean of stories in many different genres. Read through them ( click here ) to find a subject that speaks to you - whether it's anal, threesomes, incest. Most times, people find it easier to write about a genre that they are familiar with, so your story could even be written from personal experience. Now, I want to add that you are reading others' work for inspiration and hopefully to get some basics on how erotica is written, not to take their story and use it as your own. That's stealing. But if the idea of getting inspired from the main site is too overpowering, then I would suggest you try writing exercises in the form of prompts. Visit the Authors' Hangout : Writer's Challenges and Exercises. ( click here ). There are exercises there that are great for inspiring your muse. Inspiration can come from anywhere: A song, watching people, reading a magazine.

The next thing you want to keep in mind is that it may be necessary for you to do a bit of research. A story, any story, should be believable. If it isn't, you're going to risk losing your reader. Familiarize yourself with the human body and the sounds that are made during intercourse. For example, say you want to write a story and you want your male character will be using a cock ring at some point, but your knowledge of them is minimal. You'll want to inform yourself about what it is and how it's placed on the penis before you go writing free-handed about it. If this is your character's first time wearing a cock ring, will he have difficulty putting it on? Will he make a face once he's erect and the ring is tight around him?

As far as the length of your work: This is up to you. Your story can be as long or as short as you want it to be, but for submitting stories to the main site, there is a guideline that states they are not accepting stories under 750 words. ( click here )

Sharing your stories is also up to you. Your stories can be written for your pleasures only, or to share with a significant other. If you want to submit them to the main site, I would consider using Literotica's Volunteer Editor program. They help you improve your work, especially if you're thinking about submitting a story on the main site. ( click here ) Also, keep in mind that Literotica prohibits any story containing sexual acts with a minor or bestiality. The bestiality issue can be worked around if your characters are "supernatural beasts like ghosts, unicorns, werewolves, etc."

If you think that writing erotica is for you, then I encourage you to just write. Open your documents folder, or a notepad and just write. It doesn't have to make sense at first, that's the beauty of writing: You can go back and change a sentence or a whole scene if you wish. You will also use take that opportunity to catch a misspelled word, add a comma here and there...things like that.

Above all, have fun. You never know where your characters will take you.

be golden.

I'm not going to should on you. I'm just going to babble a bit. It may help.

Writing is a mechanical process. You grab a pen and drag it over paper, leaving an ink trail behind. You can't write without writing. Sitting on the couch watching TV isn't writing. You have to write to write. Pick up a pen and write. If you were painting you'd have to use a brush and pigments on a canvas. Music is even tougher because there are so many instruments, and each has a different range of sounds, and they're written in funny dots and squiggles, and yatta yatta yatta.

Writing is an art form using words. Painting is an art form using light and color. Music is an art form using sounds and silence and rythym. The only painting I'll ever do is on the wood trim of my house. My total experience with music is singing in the shower. I wouldn't know where to begin painting a landscape or composing a song.

Begin writing by reading the book "Elements of Style." It's on amazon dot com. It's in your public library. It isn't very thick. It won't take long for you to read. It makes a fine beginning.

Then write. If you need an incentive, remember that NO ONE will know what you were thinking if you don't write it. Some day you shall die. If you don't write this idea down, it'll be lost forever!

You are the only person who can do this. If I tried to write your story, it would be WRONG because I am not you.

"Do, or do not; there is no try." --- Yoda.

Creation is very hard. The rewards are worth the effort.

My biggest piece of advice: write what turns you on. If you are passionate about it, you shouldn't have any trouble.

Congratulations! Now keep it up daily. Creation is habit-forming.

What I'm writing is turning me on so much I can't sleep lol

But I'm not sure if I'm doing as well as I think I am. Is there anywhere I can post what I have written so far for people to review and constructively criticise?

You might want to stop by the Authors' Hangout and introduce yourself. We're quite welcoming to new writers.

Thank you I will do that. Can I post my scribblings there or is it strictly Q&A advice as opposed to a place to post a story for constructive criticism?
