Telling Him the Truth
Kali had been friends with Amy for a few years and she had gotten to know her boyfriend pretty well, since the two were rarely apart from eachother... at least that had been the case in the past.
Kali and Amy weren't much alike, Amy was a bit of a social butterfly who always knew the latest gossip and had to be he center of everyone's attention. Kali on the other hand was much quieter and tended to avoid drawing unneeded attention to herself. She flew under the radar for the most part. Lately Kali had noticed Amy and her man seemed to be getting into it more and more often so Kali had been avoiding them for the most part, it really wasn't her business anyway. While they were hanging out one day, just the two of them Amy kept texting on her phone and was all giggly. FInally Kali made a comment about who Amy was texting with that was making her all giddy. She got a little defensive but then couldn't hold it in anymore, she had been messing around with another guy. Kali couldn't believe it. Amy's boyfriend was such a nice guy, he didn't deserve that. Shortly after that Kali had made up and excuse and gone home. Now she was sitting at home, alone on her couch on a Saterday night. Watching the college football games in her sweatpants and a fitted tank top she was surprised when she heard the knock on her door.... even more shocked when she opened it and saw Amy's boyfriend standing in front of her........

Jared had noted a change in his girlfriends behavior but he didn't know what lay behind it. They had been together for the past two years and they looked like a great couple. Amy was a bit of a narcissist but she also got them invitations to most of the best parties in Tucson. She was outgoing and funny and she loved the social whirl that her life had become.
Jared was a perfect foil for Amy. He was tall and handsome and he fit in well with almost any crowd. Jared enjoyed the parties and clubs, and the beautiful women that seemed to always be there. At the same time, he would rather stay out of the limelight. Amy's name came up frequenty on the gossip circuit, just the way she liked it. He didn't even listen to it.
The differences between Jared and Amy seemed to sharpen as time went on. He wanted to buy some land and build a house on it. He longed to be alone with Amy more often. Lately, he found himself alone a lot- without Amy. And when he was alone with her, he was getting lied to. He needed to find out what was behind the sudden change in her.
Kali and Amy were long-time friends. Both women were beautiful, but Kali was more reserved. She was often included in their plans and she was a frequent visitor at Jared's place. If anyone knew the truth, it would be Kali. And she would not lie to him. That was why he showed up at Kali's apartment today. he had to know.

Kali smiled, a puzzled look on her face. "Jared, hi... What are you doing here?" She hadn't really seen much of him lately. She knew he couldn't lie to him...so she stayed away. He didn't look all that happy so she could only assume it had to do with Amy... Like he would just stop by her house to hang out! She shook her head and stepped o the side to let him inside. "Come on in and you can tell me what's up." He knew the layout of her place and walked to the living room. She didn't know why but he felt nervous... They didn't often get to spend much time just te two of them. "So... What brings you to my house on a Saturday night?"

Jared was not looking forward to this. He liked Kali and he didn't want to put her in the middle of another fight between him and Amy. He didn't want to drive a wedge between Kali and Amy. They were best friends and he knew they confided in each other. Kali was a loyal friend but she would not lie to protect her.
It took a few minutes before he asked her the question he had to ask. He asked her about her work and her dance studio. She was a natural with a tall slender body and long legs. He had to wonder how a girl like her was home alone on a Saturday night, watching football in her sweatpants. He didn't know where Amy was but there was no doubt that she would be dressed to kill at some party or club. He had not been asked to accompany her.
Idly chatting with Kali had always been enjoyable for Jared. She could talk about almost any subject with relative ease. In a crowd, she was low key in contrast to Amy's animated presence. Jared often found himself with Kali at the edge of the crowd. He learned a lot about her that way.
"Kali, I need to know what's going on with Amy. She has been lying to me and I need to know why. Can you help me", he finally blurted out. She had a stricken look on her face, and he knew her answer was not going to be anything he wanted to hear.

Kali didn't mind the idle chit chat with Jared. It came natural between them. She asked about his work as well and just when she thought things wer going ok and let her guard down, that's when he asked. The question she had been avoiding. She took a deep breath. "Jared I would rather you and Amy talked and she cleared up your questions but right now I couldn't tell you if she would do that or not so I will tell you what I know, bc I consider you a good friend." She paced the room as she spoke. " early last week Amy told me she was seeing someone else. We kinda got into it after she told me bc I told her I couldn't believe she would do that to you and well, I haven't seen or talked to her since then.. Jared, I'm so sorry." It was then that she looked over at him. She could see the hurt in his eyes and it made her heart ache. "Believe me, I never wanted to see you hurt... It's not fair..." She realized she was rambling to fill the silence.

Jared took a deep breath as he let her words sink in. He knew that she could be cheating. He just didn't want to believe it. There were clues if he had allowed himself to pay attention to them. It was quite possible that he was the last to know, and now he was learning the hard way.
He would be stoical in Kali's presence. He couldn't prevent Kali from seeing the hurt on his face but the tears would come later. Jared had invested a lot into this relationship and it was coming apart right in front of him. At some point, he would have to confront Amy. She owed him some answers. Before that, he needed to get Amy out of his life and out of his heart. Making up was not an option now. The cheating was bad enough but the lying was unforgivable.
He knew that he had put Kali in a bad position. Most of Amy's friends would have known she was cheating but they would have covered up for her. Many of Amy's friends were wannabes who longed to be just like her. Kali was different and he had taken advantage of her.
"Kali, I'm sorry that I brought you into this. I just didn't feel like I could trust anyone else", he tried to reassure her. "I plan on telling Amy that we're through. Making up is not an option. She doesn't need to know how I found out."
Jared was trying to sound resolute. He knew he had to get Amy out of his life, but it would be much harder to get her out of his mind. He would not be able to forget the fun they had together, nor would he forget the great sex they had shared. As numb as he felt at this moment, he was still aware of Kali's sympathetic eyes gazing back at him. Why did he have to fall in love with the wrong girl every time?

Kali smiled, she could tell he was cut much deeper than he was letting on. "Jared, honestly I'm glad you came to me and asked. It was eating me alive not telling you. I know you love her and that not being with her is going to be really hard on you.... I'm always here tho, anytime. Amy and I, well we just do t see eye to eye on much anymore." She sat on the arm if the couch and looked over at him unsure what she should even say to him.

Kali could probably sense that Jared was hurt much more deeply than he was showing. Until the past month month, he couldn't even imagine a future without Amy. They were nearly inseparable. They could make each other laugh on the worst of days. Many of their evenings ended up in bed together, making love with an intensity that he had never known. They had a circle of good friends. It was almost too good to be true.
If anything seems to be too good to be true, it probably is. He didn't even want to see Amy again. He would rather write her a short letter telling her to get her things out of his apartment and disappear with them. The future that he dreamed of with Amy was gone. Blown to bits, and scattered to the four winds. There was a suffocating sadness enveloping him. Jared wasn't prepared to be alone and lonely. His life fell apart too soon, and too suddenly. There was only one ray of light in his life; the understanding friend who was holding her hand out to him. The beautiful woman who told him she would be there for him. It was more than he deserved.

Kali gave a half smile. "Jared, I won't pretend I know how you're feeling right now bc let's far it I don't. But I just want you to know, your welcome to be here anytime you want to. I mean, I understand if you want to be alone... But if you want a friend.... I can be that friend." She didn't know what I say or do anymore.

"Just being here is more than enough, Kali". He would deal with Amy tomorrow. "I don't want to think about her now. It would only bring me down". Yes, he loved her. But it was clearly a one way thing."I never want to see her again, but I will have to. I won't mince any words. I trusted her and she betrayed that trust. I could never trust her again".
"I'd like to take my mind off Amy for a while. Who's playing football tonight? Can we watch together? I'll spring for a pizza and a sixpack if you'll have me. I'd love to see watch the ASU game. Do you mind if I hang out with you tonight?"

Kali smiled nodding her head in understanding. "I think the game I was watching just ended and ASU plays next. I would love the company if you wanna stay and watch." She smiled at him glad that he wanted a distraction even f it was just for the one night. "Just know I'm not a plain pizza type-a girl.... I like it all... Within reason of corse." She winked at him playfully as she took a seat on the couch.

"Then pizza with the works is what we'll get. Would Coors Light be OK with you?" Seeing Kali's nod of approval, Jared placed the order on his cellphone. It would be ready about a half hour. He was sure that Amy was out somewhere, probably with a few of her girlfriends. She would be wearing a new dress with matching purse and heels. By this time, she would have downed at least a couple of Captain and cokes. Jared didn't want to see any of them. Her girlfriends had been flashing fake smiles at him when they all knew that Amy was cheating. Their boy toys knew too. Everyone but him.
Here he was in Kali's cozy apartment, wearing a pair of Levis, sneakers and a jersey of his beloved Arizona Cardinals. Getting ready to share pizza and beer with a girl wearing sweatpants and tanktop while ASU was playing Stanford on the television. Amy could go out and dance until she dropped but he could care less. He would get over her.
Kali was a bonus. He liked her from the time he met her. She and Amy used to be bffs which meant that Kali spent a lot of time at his place. Many of Amy's friends were flashier, but Kali was somehow more "real". Best of all, she cared about him.

Kali laughed, nodding her head when he asked about coors light. "Sounds good to me." She listened as he placed the order and then smiled at him as he took a seat on the couch. Jared was a really nice guy. She had been attracted to him from the start. But he had hooked up with Amy and that put thoughts of him from her head. She never did understand the relationship between the two of them. Jared was so laid back.... And Amy, well she wasn't. But then again they do say opposites attract. She wasn't really sure what they should talk about or if they should even talk or if he just don't want to be alone but didn't feel like talking.

Kickoff finally arrived, and Stanford promptly drove down the field. Three minutes into the game and ASU was already down 7-0. The game was a good distraction. He didn't want to think about Amy tonight. He would have to confront her tomorrow; there was no avoiding it. While waiting for the pizza they chattered about football and the follies of their mutual friends. Neither of them noticed that Stanford had scored again, making it 14-0.
Jared caught himself sizing Kali up. Even without makeup, she was beautiful. Her tall body was almost feline, moving with that gracefulness of a dancer (which she was). He had met her before he hooked up with Amy. She knew both Amy and Jared well, and she saw them together the whole time. He was angry with himself. How could he have been so stupid? Kali could read his eyes. Laying her hand on his arm, she told him softly "Don't worry Jared. I'm right here beside you, and you're gonna be just fine".

She wasn't sure what compelled her to reach out and touch his arm telling him he would be fine... but she had done it. She smiled at him. She knew he must be going through hell and she was thankfull for the distraction of the football game to take his mind off of it even for just a little while.
The doorbell brought them both out of their drifting thoughts, it was then that she realized they were losing! She watched Jared answer the door for the pizza guy, then focused back on the game. When he walked back to the couch she shook her head, "I really can't believe we are losing!" she laughed, "Now I'm feeling depressed and need a drink." she hopped up from the couch and went into the kitchen for napkins. While she was in the kitchen she could hear Jared start to yell at the tv and she hurried back in to see that Arizona had finally scored. She laughed, "Oh so it took me leaving the room for them to score?...awesome. Thanks alot guys." she smiled as she sat the stack of napkins on the coffee table.
She didn't want to think about how good looking and what a good guy Jared was... He had just gotten his heart broken, by one of her closest friend... it wasn't fair. She tried to shake her thoughts of him away but they stayed in the back of her head. It was then that she realized how she was dressed and what a mess she must look. She blushed a little, running her fingers thru her long hair. "And thanks for not commenting on what a mess I look by the way...." she shook her head, "definatly wasn't planning on being around anyone else."

"I'm real sure that you weren't expecting me!" Jared chuckled to himself. Kali is a natural beauty, and she probably looks beautiful when she first opens her eyes in the morning. Her long hair was tossed across one shoulder and down past the middle of her back. He had also noted that she wasn't wearing makeup but she didn't need any. "Seriously, I thought you hang around home wearing a dress and heels-just in case some derelict like me shows up at your door".
Kali gave him a look then threw her napkin at him. They both started laughing as they tumbled onto the couch together. ASU was driving for the tying touchdown but neither of them were paying attention. Jared was seeing Kali in a new light. His mind wandered back, before he hooked up with Amy. Did Kali show any interest in him back then? Did he miss a signal from her? "Cracking open a couple of beers, he handed one to Kali and tapped his can against her. "To better days" he toasted, smiling into her pretty face.

Kali laughed as he teased her about being all made up while sitting at home. "Hey, ya never know!" She laughed as they joked and fell back into the couh. She tipped her beer to his as she took a sip of the refreshing beverage. She smiled at him, he was giving her a look that she wasn't use to seeing from him. She wasn't sure if it was a good look or not. She smiled at him. "I've got to admit, I'm having a good time."

Jared was having a good time too, which would have seemed impossible a very short time earlier. There is an old adage, "Every cloud had a silver lining", and it seemed particularly apt tonight. He knew that his life was about to change drastically, and he had dreaded it. But as he shared pizza, beer, and a few good laughs with Kali, he could hardly wait for tomorrow. He wished that Amy was already gone from his life.
"I am too, Kali. I'm supposed to feel betrayed and hurt. That's how it happens in the movies. But I feel more content here than I ever felt with Amy". He wasn't sure where that came from until after he said it. It even surprised him. But it was true, and he couldn't deny it. It felt like the worst had already passed.

Kali smiled at him. "Well that's good. I'm glad. You deserve to enjoy yourself." She drank some more of her beer. She couldn't help but to feel happy that he was spending time with her. "You're welcome here anytime you want.. I'm usually home besides work. I'm kinda a homebody, as you know."
She stood up from the couch and stretched her arms above her head before walki back to the kitchen grabbing a couple more beers for them. Thy seemed o be goin down almost too smoothly.

While Kali was in the kitchen for beer, Jared tried to decide what he was going to do tonight. He already had a couple of cold beers down and was about to open his third. His apartment was only a few miles away but he didn't really want to go there. He could go back and wait for Amy to come in to tell her latest lie about where she had been. He could get a room at the Super 8 but he didn't want to spend the night alone in a hotel room.
As he was pondering his next move, Jared realized that he didn't really want to go anywhere. And it didn't look like Kali was going to ask him to leave. He had a sense that this could be the start of something good.

She realized that she really didn't want him to go anywhere. But those weren't the thoughts she should be having. She didn't want to be someone's rebound girl. Those girls never got to stick around long. She wanted to keep her friendship with Jared. She took a seat back on the couch and looked at the score on the tv. "Well we are tied... Now they just have pull thru with the win." She looked over at him and smiled. They didn't have a whole lot of time left to do it, but she ha to root for her team.

The game was in the fourth quarter; there wasn't much time left. Jared could not deny that he would like to spend the night with Kali in his arms. He had admired her curvaceous dancer's body for a long time. But the timing was terrible. He knew that some friends would accuse Kali of stealing her best friend's boyfriend. Nothing could be farther from the truth. If they really wanted to blame somebody for the imminent breakup, it would be Amy. Jared wanted to love somebody who loved him back. That somebody was not Amy.

Kali smiled, "I'm glad you stayed.. And I'm not just saying that bc you bought me pizza and beer." She teased. Things just came natural with Jared. He was easy to talk to or just be around. There wasn't the constant need to talk or anything. The 4th quarter came to an end and ASU didn't pull through. Kali pouted, "well that didn't go the way I had hoped!"
She didn't know what he planned to do with rest of his night, but she didn't plan to tell him to leave. "Did you wanna stay for a movie or something or did you need to get goin?" She asked curiously. She carried their empty bottles and trash to the kitchen giving him time to think it over. She took that time to pull it together. She came back into the room standing behind the back of the couch pitting her hands on his shoulders from behind and leaning over, "so what's the virdict?"

ASU had a chance to tie it up with a long field goal, but the kicker missed it wide right. The Sun Devils usually found a way to fumble at the worst possible time. Jared had hoped they might get invited to the Sun Bowl, but that didn't look very likely. He still enjoyed watching the game with Kali. She knew football quite well and they were able to banter back and forth about penalty calls. She even drank beer for beer with him.
The smart thing to do would be to thank Kali for her company and her support, then leave before he did anything he would come to regret. She had helped him more than she could ever know. That would be the smart thing, but he wasn't ready to leave.
When kali leaned over him and asked if he'd like to stay and "watch a movie or something", he never hesitated. "I'd love to stay here with you."
