Seeking Writers for war related role play

I always wanted to write a role play about a military unit that is either abandoned, forgotten, or simply inaccessible to Command. The Unit must survive by what ever means. Some members will stay true to their commander, while others will go "off mission".

I'm looking for some serious input from interested writers.

Sounds like a good story. Need a medic? Won't rp US armed forces though. Multinational? UN? Nato?

Multinational is perfect. Allows for great variety and diversity.

On another note, I'm thinking that writers could role play two or more characters if they wanted, a more long term character and a more short term one, two. As host, I will probably introduce four or five initially but allow "fate" to see them leave the story one at a time, either by death, desertion, or other means.

Long range specialist aka Sniper.

That would be my interest

Well I would love to use two characters, but for now I only have time to stick to one character. Perhaps if it's a spotter for my character I can write that person for a very short while.

Multinational would work, how about making it a "joint" operation, where specialists from several countries are thrown together for a particular mission and end up behind enemy lines? Some global terrorist threat which forces everybody to work together

Stranded team? Like on Earth? Or you going scifi and wanting to do this on another planet. Like Stargate SG-1 style? Or perhaps a squad of Rebels/Imperials on am outer rim planet exploring?

Whatever the case count me in too. I'll take the melee specialist / communications specialist.

Special forces members do not specialize too much. Each can do the others job. Though they do have defined roles. All carry extra blood plasma and med stuff. Heavy ammo loads for squad lmg are shared. A Bergen equipped for long term survival in country weighs about 200 lbs not including water. Much time is spent ferrying gear between layup points.

Resupply is tough. You quickly pick up the weapons of the opposition, so captured ammo can be put to use. It doesn't take much of a bullet wound to suck up blood plasma. Can't get that stuff in the boonies.

Sniper won't carry a 50cal. He might step up to a full rifle cartridge from an AR round. Does lmg use AR ammo or rifle. Either way someone has access to reloads. If all carry a battle rifle we can share ammo.

If we campaign in an area that still uses FN FALs we would be in luck.

You can't snipe with an AR or AK round properly. Some illiterate goat herder with a Lee-Enfield .303 will out do you. And any sustained auto fire from personal weapons depletes ammo stocks quickly.

If we had good comms, we probably wouldn't be cutoff, lost or forgotten.

How well do we blend in with native population? Transport? Are all natives unfriendly?

You can go off mission by signing up with local warlord. Where ever we end up.

Lug around a .50 cal? Who in their right mind would want to do that? If you know of a specific time, have a good extraction plan etc you can use the .50 cal, but I will not be the guy lugging that thing around on a ground mission thank you very much.

I would much rather go for the various 7.62mm rifles or if push really comes to shove I'd opt for the .300 WinMag variants. Of course there will be a huge need for a back-up rifle (which will of course be the same as what the team uses).

If I'm not totally mistaken some assault rifles uses the 7.62 round? I might be wrong, not very up to date with assault rifles, all I know is how to insert the mag, cock it and select fire

AR15 uses a 5.56x45mm NATO round
AK uses a 7.62x39mm round
FN FAL uses a 7.62x51mm NATO round. This is a full rifle cartridge. 2700fpm
FN Minimi lmg uses usually the 5.56 round but some variants use the 7.62mm NATO round.
9mil pistol uses 9x19mm round
Submachinegun uses pistol ammo.
AR and AK use and intermediate round between a full rifle such as the FN FAL uses and pistol ammo. Full auto with rifle cartridge not feasible. Plus weight of ammo loadout is increased.

Carry AR have 500 rounds on you. Use FN FAL have 200 rounds. FN FAL is typically semi-auto except in squad lmg variants such as FN FAL C2 from Royal Canadian Armed Forces.

I do love a good shotgun, though. I carried an M590A1 as my primary for three years, and as soon as I got out I got a civvie version.

Frankly, I think the idea that full auto fire with the 7.62 isn't practical is a holdover from the early days of the M14 and FAL. The problem isn't with the weapon systems, they're fine machines. It was the fact that back then soldiers and marines were taught a more traditional, slow-fire accuracy oriented shooting stance. With a proper modern stance (hips and shoulders square to the target, rifle butt deep in the shoulder pocket, spine angled slightly forward) and equipment (compensator) I have kept a mag dump from a SCAR17 in the black at 50m.

You might want to brush up on slang. Various nations uses different terminology. Learn it or take chance of being ponti.

Okay, I'm interested. I would like to go for elements of a larger force broken up by a major enemy offensive rather than a special forces team. I'd like to make it about characters rather than tech. If we go modern, something like Twilight:2000 would work, or if we go historical, a situation similar to Napoleon (or Hitler's) retreat from Russia would work well.

By the way, I'm a former NG 54B that was attached to an artillery btty, then worked in an S-3 shop.

My experience is 35 years old. FN FAL now replaced by HK G3 as battle rifle. Supply tech drove forklift in early 80's. With rt sat coverage over operations these days hard to get lost.

What about a PMC (Private Military Contractor) unit? Lots of opportunity to get shafted by local warlord boss or corrupt government ministry.

Check out British TV show Strike Back. Women play spooks (CIA, MI6, NSA etc.). Get out in field a lot just don't have to carry the heavier weapon loadouts. The only thing men have over women is far greater upper body strength. Women's legs carry as much as 50% less weight. They have greater endurance and eye hand coordination. If it is a spook operation, she is probably in charge. Maybe not tactically but has authority over mission itself. How about being aid worker, NGO staff or nurse.

Reality is key in military RP, IMO. Look at well known military writers and spy writers.

Uhm I may be wrong about this, but isn't there other countries which actually use female spec ops in the field? I'm not talking GI Jane style here, but I think that countries like Iraq/Iran, Pakistan etc actually have female operatives?

To go with Feisty's idea, a female spy that got caught and needs extraction, but the operation goes belly up from the start?

There are female soldiers around the world. I'm not an expert but I think females make excellent pilots.

Tactical SAR for a downed pilot gone wrong. Local female military, spook, the pilot, NGO staff. Lots of roles for females. Not just as one in need of rescue by strong males.

Being lost having a native contact would be good. Speaks the local dialects maybe.

In fact guys could play local military contact too. If I was lost in equatorial Africa, someone local to hold my hand would be nice.
