And we’ve just had the news that the Russians are preparing to send three ships from their Black Sea port to the Syrian port of Tartus, where the Russians have a base and facilities that Putin has revived for the first time since the Cold War. And we have a president who says ‘I’m not sure they are signing on to our program.’”

That presence of Russian warships in war-torn Syria was what The Washington Post columnist deemed a “challenge” to western powers.

“This is a challenge to the United States and to the West,” he continued. “This is a thumb in the eye to the United States. And this is the Russians planting their flag saying Syria is our property, our client, our state and we are going to do as we wish and the United States has a president who not only says anything to oppose that or to critique it but says we are working with them because ‘I’m confident they don’t condone the massacres.’”

:rolleyes: On the one hand, RWs are calling Obama an insane, constitution-destroying warhawk for things like Libya and Afghanistan and cyber-attacks on Iran and drone-strikes anywhere. OTOH, they call him some kind of weak-kneed pacifist who has caused a "decline in U.S. influence." Make up your fucking minds.

It's in the interest of putting our own country first, with the understanding the Cold War is over, that I support bringing the troops home from their European and Asian bases. We now have sufficient submarine, aircraft carrier, and airlift power to make our presence felt should the immediate safety of the US be threatened, we can place cruise missiles on targets at weill, and pput boots on the ground rapidly anywhere needed. The support of the Socialist economy in Europe with American defense support, allowing them to ridicule our protection while living in its shadow, is not in our self interest. They'll miss us when we're gone....

The revolution was long overdue (and might yet be thwarted by the damned corrupt generals). In any case, all Obama did was speak out in favor of the revolution, rather belatedly.

Protection from whom? Not Russia, and not any of the Islamic or African countries, and definitely not China. So, who?

He "leads from behind " in Libya. He institutes a surge in Afghanistan that is fully half of what the generals on the ground recommend. And he has more drone attacks, a radio controlled war, than any of his antecedants.

He is unique in history by showing how much of a douchebag he is by employing bombs and guns and munitions.

What "new war"? Whatever the Arab Spring leads to, it won't be war between any two Arab countries, unless they decide on some kind of Arab League joint intervention in Syria, which would probably be a good thing. Nor will it lead to any Arab state making war on Israel; not even the Muslim Brotherhood wants that.

What do you think are the intentions of the Russians now? Not any military threat to the West, certainly.

And how did Carter miscalculate same back in the '70s? There's no reason to expect him to have anticipated the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan, and no way he could have prevented it. Otherwise, detente was a really good idea at the time.
