Yeah, why is that? I know there are RWs with brains out there somewhere, I've met many on other boards.

Well most people period believe what they believe and you have to have an overwhelming amount of facts to change a person's opinion on anything. That's just human nature.
I try to keep an open mind about facts as distinct from values. (Like my personal hero, George Orwell.) I used to be anti-nuke like any good environmentalist, but my brother, who is an engineer (and a self-ID'd "radical libertarian") convinced me the plants are safe and clean with today's technology. Which is something I really want to believe, because I don't want every single drop of oil and lump of coal and cubic yard of natural gas remaining in the Earth's crust to be pumped out or dug up and burned to release its CO2 into the atmosphere; nor do I want this wonderful industrial civilization to collapse for lack of a power supply (no, small ain't beautiful); there's got to be a third option. (I might have to re-evaluate yet again in light of Fukushima . . .)

I try to do that as well but I'm certain I don't on everything. I'm pro-nuke, I don't think we should be judging if we want to use nukes here on Japan however. Tiny Island that's earth quake prone, there are lots of places in the US that haven't had a real earthquake in forever.

Other than the Orwell reference, because I don't know enough about him to comment, I completely agree with this post. My brother is different from yours, but he's equally qualified to comment. However, I basically flipped on nukes based on stuff I read here. It actually does happen. I also flipped on gun control based on stuff I saw here, which made me go and research it. I've actually learned a lot about politics and economics and energy here. One of the things I like about this forum is that for almost any given topic, there's someone here who knows more than I do.

Here's my theory; bear with me: the majority of the RW fringe here view this as a "porn board", and they're attracted to this place because they feel it's taboo. People who think it's an affront to God or others to have open discussions about what turn them on tend to be...well, a little chickenshit to begin with. Their opinion of erotica is actually pretty low (case in point: you'll see them demean "porn" all the time when push comes to shove, e.g. "It's just a porn board").
So, they're pussified to begin with. Additionally, lashing out against liberals who have no issue with erotica is not only a given - it's necessary. It justifies their worldview.
That's also the reason the KKK crowd spams this place...and the reason our RW fringe pals aren't quick to condemn them.

Went well. Flight back sucked. 6am flight so I was up at 3:30est landed at 8:00pst (an hour early) but could no get A gate and sat on the Tarmac for 1.5 hours. Thank god for first class. To top it off I had meetings all day today.
