Dominate vs. Dominant. Why confused?

Why do so many people use the word "dominate" when they actually mean "dominant"? Just wondering, as a grammarian, that is.

And it isn't only true of your country. Here, everyone gets fundamentals wrong and it drives me nuts. No-one seems to know when to use an apostrophe and, if they're in doubt, they bung one in on some 'More is better" basis. And when did "you're" become "your"? When did "should've" become "should of"?

Whenever I read "dominate" where it should be "dominant", I put my charitable head on and imagine that the poster knows the correct word but has a terrible head-cold.
