Writers Discussion Thread

"Breakfast at the Whitney"

A Friendly Request: This thread is for writers -- current and prospective -- to ask questions, post comments, and propose ideas concerning the role play. I do ask, however, that you don't turn in into a chat room. If you have something to say or ask that every one should see, do it here; but if you are conversing with just one specific writer, please PM them. If there is a flood of replies here that have virtually no content, someone -- maybe even the host -- is going to miss something important; and this particular thread is going to live or die on details.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

BTW, this is the link to the IC thread. I'm just laying down some of the background; obviously we aren't ready to post, not until we have all of the characters' profiles.

So ... this is my plan for this thread:
1. First, I am simply going to post thoughts about the role play, much as you would see in an OOC thread, to ensure that the writers -- those who have already said they're in and those who might want to be -- know exactly what they are getting themselves into.

2. I will, over time, organize all of these little posts -- mine and yours -- so that they are more easily perused by all.

3. And, when appropriate, I will transfer information posted here in the Discussion Thread to the OOC thread ... where no one but the Host is to post!! (The OOC thread must remain neat and easy to use by all, so please, I beg of you, don't ever post there.)

Okay, so let's get started...

See the next post.

This link will take you to the "ISO Post" in My Open RPs. There you will find a good description of the role play as it stands now.

The basic plot will not likely be changed much from what you see above. The details have to be worked out, of course. Here are some of the basics:
1. Each Competitor -- that's your character(s) -- is a convicted criminal serving a lengthy (if not life) sentence in a Federal Penitentiary. Prerequisites to being a Competitor are:
a. You have consistently sworn your innocence, whether or not you truly believe in your own innocence.

b. Your trial had irregularities allowing you to appeal it, but you have exhausted your appeals process with no result.

c. (Maybe more; still contemplating.)

2. You have been given an opportunity to compete, knowing that violence -- including beatings, torture, rape, and death -- are possibilities. (BATW has a way around the whole violation of your basic rights issue concerning all of this, which will be explained shortly.)

3. You have been promised a full pardon, a million dollar prize, and a new start (with a new identity if you choose it) if you survive. (This is not like in "Running Man" when no one ever survived and those who supposedly did and were living it up on a desert island were actually privately executed. There have been survivors and winners: roughly 2 out of 3 survive, and 1 out of 10 win, with the winners going off to live their new lives and the others returning to prison ... or, more often than not, the prison hospital.)

4. (More later).
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

To Get Started:
1. Create a character at this link.

2. Remember, you are a criminal, either guilty but with a sham trial or innocent and wrongly convicted.

3. PM it to the host and get ready to rumble.

CHARACTER PROFILE SHEET:
1. Do not spend a bunch of time making your profile perfect. Your host is one anal SOB and will edit the format (and maybe even a bit of content) in an attempt to make all profiles look the same ... so, don't fret over perfection.

2. Block and copy the profile sheet into a PM. DO NOT post the profile to the OOC or the Discussion thread.

3. Make your answers brief and leave some mystery concerning your character. As the game is played, we will learn more about your character.

4. PM the completed form to the Host, AnotherOldGuy.

5. After his OCD allows him to edit it properly, he will post it to the OOC and -- once we have enough characters -- we will get started.

6. OldGuy, as I will sometimes refer to myself -- to prevent confusion between the "RP Host" and the "BATW Host" -- recommends that each writer submits at least 2 characters. People are going to die; and at other times, people will simply be inactive, with nothing to post. If you want to have fun, have multiple characters.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

WRITER'S ID:

CHARACTER'S NAME: (The name on their prison record.)

CHARACTER'S GAME NAME: (The name they choose for the competition, something snazzy or hip or scary or what ever.)

CHARACTER'S PIC, GENDER, AGE, AND PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
(A note about pics: no famous celebrities, no anime or graphic art, no overwhelming advertising, no hotlinks to other sites. If you don't know how to do this, ask. I will help.)

CRIME FOR WHICH YOU WERE CONVICTED: (Do not comment on whether you are or are not guilty of your crime.)

LENGTH OF YOUR SENTENCE: (Lengthy or Life; no Death Penalties)

PERSONALITY: (Meek, bad ass, gang member, what ever. Be vague if you want but give us what others would notice about you within a few minutes of conversing with you.)

DETAILS THE BATW HOST WOULD KNOW AND PRESENT TO THE AUDIENCE: (Family, friends, associations; stuff that would make the audience either love you or hate you.)

ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU WANT TO SAY NOW: (Remember, you can leave some stuff vague. OldGuy can add it as the RP unfolds.)

A Vital Note:

You must be able to view "Google Map Street View" on whatever computer you are playing at to be able to participate in this role play.

"The Arena" is a four block section of a real city, and in order to understand the Arena, you the writer must be able to see the Arena. With Street View, you can walk the mean streets and look about you in every direction; you can look for places to hide, places where the enemy might hide, and plan a route to sprint along, avoiding detection and possible death.

I have chosen a neighborhood in Detroit as our Arena, specifically the four (or so) block area to the south of The Whitney, a late 19th century mansion that currently is a fancy, shmancy restaurant. It's perfect! (If you're a Detroit native, don't be offended that I placed my kill-rape-torture role play in your city.)

Using Street View is actually pretty easy. There is a tutorial, but I learned by just doing stuff. I will explain more later, but for now let me just tell you this much:
NOTE: If you already know all of this, fantastic. And if you know an easier way, even better. PM with the easier methods and I will adjust my descriptions both below and in the RP. (Remember my ID, AnotherOldGuy? I have Windows XP, so don't include any Chrome or W7 specific stuff.)
1. There is a possibility that you may have to have Google Earth downloaded to the computer you are on. I'm not sure about this; I had GE long before I learned about Street View, so I don't know if it's a prerequisite.

2. Depending on your computer and software, you may have to allow Google to know your current location; a prompt will ask "Share Location?", to which you have to say yes. It's no biggie; there is no such thing as privacy anymore, so who cares if Google knows where your sitting right now anyway.

3. The easiest way to use Street View to find the Arena the first time is:
a. Go to "Google Map Street View".

b. Select "Try Google Maps With Street View".

c. Type "The Whitney Detroit" into the address search box at the top and click on the little search icon.

d. And there it is. Supposedly, you can save the location to "My Places", but I can't get mine to save, so I just go back the the search again each time I log onto Street View.

4. Zoom in on the map (using your mouse's roller or the plus sign below the compass in the upper left of the map, below the compass) until the name of the street running east-west in front of The Whitney appears; it is Canfield Street, btw.

5. Notice the little yellow icon on the left of the map that looks like a man. I call him "Yellow Man".

6. To see a tour of the borders of the Arena:
a. Click and Hold on Yellow man and place him on the intersection of the blue lines at Canfield Street and Woodward Avenue.

b. Look at the compass in the upper left hand corner of the map. You can change the direction you are looking by:
i. Clicking and holding on the "N" symbol (north) and moving it about.

ii. Or placing your mouse icon on the street -- which will create a circle on the road -- then clicking, holding, and dragging left or right.

3 Notes about "clicking":
-- If you "click" but don't "hold" on the road, yellow man will move to where you clicked to.
-- If a plus sign appears in the circle, Yellow Man cannot move there but you will zoom in on the location. If you "zoom" too close to another road, Yellow man will move to that new road and change the direction you're looking. It's confusing the first couple of times, but you get used to it.
-- If a rectangle appears and not a circle and you click, you will zoom on what was in the rectangle, not move Yellow Man.

c. Using step "b" above, look to the west up Canfield Street. (The "N" symbol on the compass will be to the right, indicating that west -- at the top of the compass now -- is in front of Yellow Man.) You will see The Whitney on the right and the Agave cafe on the left.

d. Now, you can move up (west on) Canfield Street by either clicking on the little arrow on the street in front of you or placing your mouse cursor in the middle of Canfield and clicking once.

e. Yellow Man will "run" up the street.

f. Again, you can look around yourself, 360 degrees.

g. Repeat Yellow Man's "run" up Canfield all the way to the intersection with Cass Avenue ... turn left (south) ... repeat the run past Willis and Alexandrine Streets to Selden Street ... turn left (east) ... run to Woodward Avenue ... turn left (north) ... and finally run back up to where you began, at Canfield and Woodward.

h. That is the border of the Arena: Canfield and Selden Streets, Cass and Woodward Avenues.

That's enough for now.

I'm having a hard time with "team" names. We have two teams of "bad" people; this link goes to the "Descriptions and Motivations" page in the OOC.

So ... what do we call them...? Warriors, Gladiators, Defenders, Attackers...? Do we give each team a name? Originally, I called the "good guys" -- who are actually bad cops -- "Team Whitney", but that just sounds stupid.

Help me out folks. Oh, and remember!! If you do have a reply, make it here in this thread, not in the OOC to which the link above goes to.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

While I am on the topic of the OOC, occasionally I will post there, and the posts will include a reminder not to post there. Don't take offense to my constant reminders. I do that because sometimes people confuse the OOC with the WDT (Writers Discussion Thread) and post without realizing they are in the wrong place. I'm not trying to be an ass ... although, I am anal. (There is a difference, even if both words are derived from the same orifice.)

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Just an update: we have 2 female convicts in the Warriors List and a 3rd one on the way. We still need male "bad guys"; I only have 1 male writer who has seriously expressed an interest.

I will probably be writing 2 or 3 "convicts" who will be a little more "expendable" than your characters (ie, they will not survive). The reason is three fold: to produce fodder for the cannons -- which I think I already said somewhere; to give exposition/description of the Arena through the eyes of a contestant; and to propose ideas, which the other competitors can either go with or object to.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Has everyone tested Google Street View to ensure that they can use it? I am going to put a post in the OOC that clarifies exactly what in the street view is really there for the Role Play. (For example, since cars and pedestrians on the roads and sidewalks are there one moment and then gone the next, we will pretend they simply aren't there; however, the cars in the parking lots usually are there all the time, so they will be there.)

Hey All, got another slight change to the role play; it's nothing really serious, but I think it adds a little touch of reality to our fantasy:

In contrast to the previous "qualifications" of our convicts, from here out all convicts will have already been on death row with their appeal process exhausted. This way, killing them in the name of entertainment doesn't seem like as much of a stretch. Yeah, yeah, I know: it still wouldn't happen, but that's the fantasy part of it, right?

Additionally, I earlier said that convicts had to have been professing their innocence. The purpose was that it could allow the audience to have some compassion if they wanted or hate them if they wanted. I would like all writers to PM me whether or not their characters are in fact guilty or innocent. I will keep this information confidential; your character is allowed to reveal this information during the course of the RP if they wish, or they can lie about it, too. Only you and I will know.

I will update profiles tonight when I am at my computer, not my phone.

I am also changing the prerequisites for the "good guys", but I will address that when I get home. I know it sounds like I am making this up off the top of my head and am too unorganized to be doing something this intricate ...I know this, because it's probably true!! But, I think I can pull it off.

Wish me -- and US -- good luck.

Hey, I came up with an idea while I was watching "Gladiator" last night on DVD.

What if we added a little more sex -- above and beyond the rape, of course. Combatants, primarily Convicts but Cops, too, if we want, can engage in sex with elite audience members, millionaires who want to be able they said they fucked -- or was fucked by -- one of the BATW "gladiators". It could make for some interesting interaction. This sex would happen both before the battle began and during rest breaks. The Combatants would, of course, benefit: their families or friends could get money, or possibly the Combatants themselves would get weapons or hints about upcoming Rounds of Battle.

Another advantage to doing this would be that during the slow periods of the actual Battle, when we are waiting for one particular writer to post, these sex scenes could be written by the writers who are on line at the time.

On another note, just because this RP is part turn-by-turn style game, that doesn't mean that writers can't be role playing in other ways. We can create non-combatants who are involved in the role play indirectly ... or what ever. My point is, sometimes things might go slow, so if we had something else to do, that would be good.

Just a thought.

Hey All,

We are almost ready to start posting to the IC thread. Marcus is still conducting "interviews", which I would like everyone to read along with as they play out, as they each contain a little information about the RP as a whole in them:
Athena
Chica
Harlequin
... and the others are coming today.

Keep in mind as you are reading/writing interviews, that the Convicts may or may not know much about BATW. It is the most popular entertainment program in the world at the time, bigger on television than American Idol (still on in 2028), bigger on radio than the BBC World News (which won't even discuss it, except to talk about the law suits against it), and with more Registered Members at its website than Youtube and Facebook combined.

But ... if you're not the type of person to watch men and women fighting to the death or having sex -- consensual and rape, both -- then BATW is probably just as foreign to you as ... well, as foreigners.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

One point I totally forgot to make clear: each character is facing the death penalty! I know that originally I said each had a life sentence, and that each was professing their innocence. But I changed each for good reason:
-- Facing a death penalty allows them to sign a BATW contract forfeiting their right to a humane execution in exchange for a more brutal one ... BATW. In exchange for facing that more brutal death, they are given a chance at freedom, which they wouldn't have under any circumstance otherwise.

-- Not requiring them to be guilty of their crimes -- or even admit at this point whether they are guilty of their crimes, even if they are -- allows for Convicts who the audience can feel loathing for and Convicts the audience can feel compassion for, too.

-- Make sense?

Okay, I'm going back to work.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

A final note, I want to make sure you all have an understanding of the threads associated to BATW:
IC Thread -- Obviously where the action concerning the characters and competition as a whole occurs.

OOC Thread -- where the profiles, maps, and very significant details are at. PLEASE DO NOT POST HERE!

Writers Discussion Thread -- this thread you are in now. If you have a question, comment, and concern that you feel everyone should see, post it here. If you are not sure whether you should post it here, feel free to PM it to the Host and I will deal with it, either by PMing the appropriate writers and/or posting it to the WDT with an answer/response. (The point is this: please don't flood the WDT with a bunch of short posts that others don't need to see.)

You all should be subscribed to the above three threads.

Personal Threads: Personal Threads will be used extensively throughout the RP. The reason for them is to allow a pair of writers the ability to exchange a series of short replies -- sometimes one and two liners -- whether it be combat, conversation, or sex, without cluttering the IC thread with posts that make it impossible to follow. We will make great use of these Personal Threads, and I recommend that you subscribe to them as follows:
"Interview Threads": Subscribe to all. They will contain information about the Characters that expands on their profiles and give important insight into how they will perform in the battle; and they will give a lot of information about the background of the Arena and the battle; because some of this information will only be written in Interview Threads, if you don't read all of these threads, you will miss out.

"Individual Combat threads" -- Just what they sound like. When we get into combat, it will be often be taken to Personal Threads because there will be an exchange of short posts, sometimes including little more than a swing of a fist or a shot of a weapon. This can not be conducted in the main IC thread without people missing out on things, so they will be done in Personal Threads. Subscribe to all Combat Threads.

"Sex Threads": will give deeper background and insight into the characters, as well as a little information about the story and the Arena. I would subscribe to these, but if you don't want to read about two other characters having sex, don't. (I will make arrangements for any important information about the larger story to be made available to the writers via the WDT.)

"Rape Threads": Subscribing to these is totally up to you; same comment above about putting the information in the WDT. Each pair of writers involved in a rape thread should discuss before hand how graphic they want their scene to be. No writer is required to be involved in a rape scene. If you have a female character who gets captured by a Cop who does rape -- and not all do -- she will get raped, unless she Forfeits from BATW ... but the scene will not be written if you as a writer do not want to write a rape scene.
BATW Clarifications Thread -- Where the Host puts a lot of the FAQs and other clarifications. There is no need to subscribe to this thread, therefore I have not included a link to it here. It is more of an FAQ, and a great deal of the information in this thread will be out of context if you simply read a stand alone post ... so don't. Click on the links in the other threads and you will go to the appropriate post in the Clarifications Thread ... then go back out to where you were and you'll be better informed. (I will include a lot of Street View Maps in this way, to give you a clear view of what your Character is looking at.

Hey, all,

I am hoping that everyone's subscribed to and following the Interview Threads at this link. Each one is personal to a specific combatant, but -- and this is an important "but" -- each also has important information for the role play as a whole

One example is this post, which includes a detailed description of the security devices used to transport convicts. I am not going to repeat this description again and again, but I will refer to the security devices as Security Belt and Cuffs ... so you will need to read this post and understand what's going on.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I am also going to start a thread called "The Convict Tour". It is sort of a "walk through" of the Arena. The purpose of this thread it to familiarize the writers with the arena. The tour will be conducted "in character" by one of Marcus's Security Supervisors. What I am offering here is an opportunity for all writers to ask questions about the Arena, sort of like a Writers Discussion thread just for the Arena. Here are some examples of questions I can imagine being asked or comments I can imagine being made:
1. "Is the silver car in the right of this image actually in the Arena at the time of the battle?"

(There are more to come, but I am currently out of time.)

Okay, I do have a question, and if I am wrong to post it here, I AM sorry...

Say the competitors are at 'Home', can there be interactions? I am thinking Hitomi, would pop off with a "Okay which of you bitches wanna fuck before we are killed?" type thing (It is SO Hitomi anyway... :p)

Absolutely. Here are a couple of thought about what will happen once the IC thread is up and running:
1. The "battle" is more or less a turn by turn "game". This means that at times, some of the writers will be waiting on another writer to post.

2. Usually, that would be a pain in the ass for all of those waiting, however...

3. By creating some additional threads -- I've been calling them "Personal Threads" because they are usually between two writers -- that don't necessarily follow the IC thread timeline or have to wait for the action to be completed in the IC thread, the writers who are waiting on the turn by turn portion will still have something to do.

Make sense?

G'mornin', g'mornin', g'mornin' ... up and at'em gladiators...

Hey, so today I am concentrating on a couple of essential tasks and likely won't be writing in the Interview Threads much. This is my last weekend day -- I work a strange shift -- and I have so much to do, both here and in RL.

My plan today:
1. Get the rest of the Profiles posted. (I missed 2 and I apologize to those writers profusely.)

2. Get the rest of the Interview Threads (for the above missing Profiles) started and up to speed. By the end of today (RL), I would like to have all of the Interview Threads up to, oh let's say, 4 May 2028, at which time I will begin to introduce all of the convicts to one another.

3. Get the "Convict Tour" started. (This is where the writers begin to get a feel for how to use Google Street View (GSV) in the battle phase.)

4. And, personally, have the rest of the Cops posted for you to look at. (More on this below.)

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I wanted to clarify something about Timelines and threads. I got 2 PMs of interest, one asking about how the 1x1s (the Interview Threads) are not all taking place at the same exact time and if that is how the IC thread is going to be; and another asking if the battle portion will also be conducted this way, in 1x1s. Here is some clarity ... which, for me, sometimes means thinner mud, not clear, drinkable water, but I will do my best to make things understandable:
1. The 1x1 threads going on now (The Interview Threads) are all taking place during the same time period (early April to early May), but they are not, obviously, all synchronized with one another. That is exactly why these "interviews" and the follow up settlement and training at "Home" are done in 1x1s, because it allows one thread to proceed at a snail pace and then jump ahead several days, while the other one moves ahead consistently, one day after another.

2. This is important!! Every writer should be reading every Interview Thread. I know that it may look like a lot of reading, but imagine if all of this writing was being done in the IC thread; you would still read it, because if you didn't, you would likely miss important information, right? Well, each of the 1x1s has some little bit of information in it that all writers will want to have for the future. I do not repeat back ground information again and again in each 1x1. A good example is the Security Cuffs; I explained them in one Interview Thread, but I talk about them in all of them.

A note about rape threads: If you don't want to read the threads where a combatant is raped or otherwise forced into sex, don't. But, you have to let me know that you aren't following that particular thread so that I can update you later on any vital information that you may have missed, such as "Hey, your team member just got a gun", or "Hey, your team member just died!".

3. When we get into the battle phase, the action will begin in the IC Thread. Remember how I explained that all convicts will have headsets that are linked, so that all convicts can see and hear what all other convicts are seeing and hearing? Well, when we first start, all posts by writers will go into the IC thread. However, if a particular convict gets entangled with a cop and there are going to be lots of short "fighting" or "sex" posts, it's better for them to be conducted in a 1x1 that is linked into the IC thread.

I learned about how to use linked 1x1s from a writer on another site, and she liked to describe the process as squirrels climbing a Maple tree in autumn. The trunk of the Maple is the IC thread, and if all of the squirrels -- that's you writers :D -- just climb the trunk straight to the top, they are "climbing" the IC. But, you know squirrels; sometimes they get all crazy and start jumping around and climbing in circles (i.e., posting lots of replies), and the IC gets crowded. So, two or more squirrels go off on another limb to play for a while; that's a 1x1. When those squirrels go off on their own, all of the other squirrels know it because they can see them running off through the leaf-less tree (or, in our case, because the writers posted a link in the IC to the 1x1). And, of course, the other squirrels can still see their buddies off on their branch and know what they're up to (in our case, by reading the 1x1.) When those maverick squirrels get to the end of the limb -- complete the 1x1 -- they just leap through the air back to the trunk/IC thread, and voila, we're all back together again. (I had to tell that story. I love that explanation.)

What this does for us is allow us to read the action taking place between two characters, between a small group of characters, or between the entire team of characters without all of the confusion of having everyone posting in the IC.

The other MAJOR benefit of using these 1x1s is that if the action -- for example, in a fight between two combatants off on their own -- is dependent upon one character and that particular writer is absent for a couple of RL days, the entire thread doesn't come to a screeching halt! As long as all of the 1x1s are linked to the IC in the timeline, we maintain the timeline and writers who have multiple characters can continue to write even if they are waiting for an absent writer to return. Make sense?

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I put out an ISO post in the Seeking Writers thread and we have our first response. We have a potential writer who wants to have sex with one of the female convicts. I'm going to bring him in, but the question is, at which point:
1. I can have him come in now and take the roll of one of the Breakfast elite sponsors who will have sex with one of the female convicts and provide her with some sort of benefit that can be used during the battle.

2. Or, I can bring him in now but "post date" the action until later, meaning that the 1x1 thread you are writing takes place later during the battle phase, but you can be writing it now and post a link when the time line catches up.

So what I need is: A female character who isn't already engaged in or preparing to be engaged in pre-battle sex; or a writer who wants to write a "post dated" scene. If I can't find one, I'm going to interest the guy in writing a male convict instead. We could use 1 or 2 more of those, too.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

This is something I want you all to understand is a possibility: post dated threads. There are going to be times when the IC thread is waiting for one particular writer to get to his/her computer and post. During those times, if you do not have a 1x1 going on, you won't have anything to do. Now, I'm not an idiot; I know that most of you have other threads you're involved in, too, and those will give you something to do when Breakfast is delayed. (Personally, I am active in 5 -- soon to be 8 -- Breakfast threads as well as 3 non-Breakfast role plays, so I always have too much to do ... and I love it!)

My point is, if you have more than one character and/or get some 1x1s going as well, you will always have someone to write with. Each of you knows how much time you have and how many role plays you can handle; don't take on too much, as I have a tendency to do. But, don't be bored either, by sitting here and staring at the screen wondering, Why won't people post already??

Oh, another note about the 1x1 Interview Threads:

I just posted a rather lengthy post in the Interview Thread for John Blake that will be of interest to everyone.

It covers the contract each combatant signs, some of the rules of Breakfast, some background of the show, and introduces a female character who is available, despite the fact that she is a Cop character. (I am still considering allowing writers to play some of the cops. I haven't decided because it brings up issues concerning the turn-by-turn combat phase.)

Please, if you are not reading all of the Interview threads -- which I strongly urge all of you to do -- please at least read this one post.

Me again.

I was asked about how much of the battle phase will be blind luck and how much of it will be by my own direction. Here is more clarification on that:
1. Before a battle phase, I will pre-determine where the Cops will make their entrances into the Arena. Then, you all will post where your convicts are going. If paths cross, they cross, and action occurs. That's the luck part of it ... or bad luck, depending upon the outcome.

(This is why I chose to write all of the cops myself, so I can control where they are and create more of a "game" out of it.)

2. However, there are some writers who have specific directions for their characters; some of the female characters are already destined to be raped, some of the male characters won't participate in rape, some of the innocent convicts need a way to show that they are still good guys, and even some of the cops are good guys, not bad cops who are just one step above the nastiest of the convicts on the evolutionary ladder.

My point is, by not disclosing to you writers when and where a specific cop may show up, I can control which cops and convicts meet and therefore control a bit of the role play portion without giving up the gaming portion of it.

Does that make any sense?

Hi, just a reminder:

Please check to see that you can use Google Street View on what ever device it is that you are using to play in Breakfast. GSV is a vital part of the turn-by-turn action that will, eventually, be key to the "game". Without being able to use it, I don't think you'll be able to play.

So, if you are using a smart phone -- iPhone, Blackberry, etc. -- please check right now and make sure that you can use GSV. Then, send me a PM stating that you tried it and it does work.

I would send you a link here to get you started on your way, but I'd rather you did it totally on your own. Search the internet for "Google Street View", click on the link that says "Try Street View" (or something to that effect) and go in and do a search for "The Whitney Detroit".

It is important that you be able to use GSV for the role play; the Convicts Tour, which I am still working on but is at least accessible, will give you an idea of some of the information that GSV gives you. Check it out now.

Good luck.

Okay ... that's disappointing.

Half of our writers are having issues with GSV. The initial inspiration for the role play was my desire to run a turn-by-turn competitive game using GSV as our "eyes", and I want to stick to that.

So, here's my plan:
1. I am going to continue working on the "Convicts Tour".

2. I will look for a way to do this RP without the necessity of GSV, but I honestly don't see any other way to do it. I can try to put images in the tour in such a way that all of the major Arena locations can be viewed without GSV, but I don't currently know how to do that. I tried to save GSV images, Google Satellite Maps, and Google Street Maps to my computer so that I could use Paint to add the grand stands, Sky Bridges, etc., and I couldn't figure it out. (I can print them just fine, but I can't seem to save them.)

3. After I have played with it a while, we will decide how to continue. I don't want to "dump" any writers -- we have all committed time and mental energy -- but GSV (or a suitable equivalent) is a must.

A quick note for clarification:

I was never happy with the term "Cops" in referring to the former law enforcement officials. I am adopting the term "Enforcers" instead. So, you will begin to see that word slowly replacing all of the previous uses of the word "Cops".

Concerning the loss of our only male writer:

We are going to soldier on. I have 2 female writers -- one current, one prospective -- who are interested in writing male roles; and I can write some of them as well, although my guys will be fodder for the cannons and won't last long. (We might end up with just chicks battling for the Millions!)

So, tonight, after I get off work, I will return to the Interview/pre-Battle threads and get us going again.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Right now I am putting the final touches on the first entry to the Convict Tour, which should be ready for you to view in an hour or so. (Check the time stamp of this posting, to the upper left.)

This is being posted at the request of Guy. It's my response to the PM he sent us all concerning what we want to do about having no male writers.

I think that, while we wait for more male characters we should continue to write the interview threads. The one thing we need to be careful of if we continue to write the interview threads is that we keep everything moving forward instead of just kind of writing in a circle in order to kill time until we find male writers. Another possibility might be to see if any of us writers currently involved in the RP would like to do male roles as well. If no male writers can be found, I don't mind stepping in to help fill those open roles.

Just another update on the whole GSV situation.

I hate to say this, but all writers are going to have to be able to use GSV from what ever device they are using to role play from. Two of the key elements of the battle phase are the Insertion Points/Hidden Equipment Caches and the "hunt":
-- Convicts will have a variety of safe insertion points to access the arena from, each one with an equipment (weapons, etc.) cache. But, they aren't simply told "here it is, go get it"; instead, they are given a clue of what to look for, and to use that clue you have to be able to look 360 degrees about you and solve the clue. And you can't do that without GSV. :(

-- And the battle phase depends upon the same ability, looking about you for the Enforcers. Without being able to do that... well, you have to.

So, here's where I see us right now:
1. Those writers who already know that they can use GSV, we can continue onward with the interview/pre-battle threads and, once we get more characters, begin the first battle phase.

2. Those writers who can't use GSV, there's really no reason to continue our Interview/pre-battle threads. sure, I'd love to write with you, but the goal is the battle phase ... which you can't do. :(

I am still soliciting writers.

The Convict Tour is finally ready to be read and reviewed. Here are some notes about it:
1. It took me some trial and error to create it and organize all of the links. I believe that they all work. If you discover a link that doesn't seem to go to the page it wasn't supposed to, PLEASE PM me so I can fix it.

2. From the very first post -- sort of an index page -- you can access:
a. The Convict Tour Street Map -- this identifies all of the Tour Stops as letters ("A" through "W", if I recall).

b. The Introduction and Explanation -- this will tell you all you need to know about how to use the Convict Tour thread in the future.

c. The Skinny -- the basic maps and facts about each Tour Stop.

d. The Fluff -- a role play style dialogue between the Tour Guide and both the Convicts and the Breakfast employees they happen to come across as the tour continues, including Overseers.

3. Now, this is important. There are more pages in the thread that are not important. Some are errors, some are for future use. You don't need to read them ... and, in some cases, reading them will ruin the "game" portion of the role play. What I am saying then, is begin with the link above, and from that page access the links within it and, of course, the links within those. But don't go navigating around to look at other stuff.

4. This is the most important part though: Please, each time I announce the availability of a new Tour Stop, will you:
a. Look at The Skinny for that Stop to get a feel for the surroundings.

b. Read the initial "dialogue" in The Fluff ... which, of course, won't be much of a dialogue because you haven't done 4c below.

c. PM me any questions, comments, or concerns (QC&C) you have, identifying which Tour Stop you are talking about and, if you have the ability, including a link to the exact GSV "view" you're talking about, which I am going to explain in an upcoming WDT post.

I just wanted to update y'all.

I don't think this is going anywhere soon. I can't get anymore male writers, and we only have 1 female writer who can used GSV. I won't give up on the original concept, so until I can get some more male writers, I'm going to just dink around with the Convicts Tour and step back from the Interview threads.

I may end up having to restructure it as a "Survivor" type of role play, or perhaps an urban assault sort of thing. I always wanted to do a "failed state", city under siege kind of role play; maybe that will be next. Anyway, if you are interested in something else, I started another more relaxed, normal group thread called "The King of El Dragon". That's the IC thread, and this is the ISO posting. Check it out
