"Sorry, cowboy, can't get back to you right now. You know, busybusybusy," Jody's cheery voice said over Kurt's voicemail. Christ. Every fucking time.
This hadn't been the first time he'd been sidelined in Jody's life. Every exam, every school event was an "I need to be there... I need to do that..." moment for her. And while he'd tried to be patient most of the time, lately Kurt had been getting fed up with being a mere decorative fixture for Jody's go-getter life.
But it was their anniversary, Kurt thought. This day a year ago had been the most important part of his life, and he wanted to celebrate that with her. And suddenly, sadly --frustratingly-- he felt like she didn't. He sighed. Okay, he decided. This last time, I'll humor her. It seemed like he'd been giving her those "one last times" for the longest time ever.
He was in the midst of cleaning up the meal he'd prepared --Caesar salad, shrimp linguine, and tiramisu-- when a whole other thought occured to him.
Grinning like a lovesick fool, Kurt packed twin portions of each course into resealable containers that he then put into a large paper bag. Taking the time to dress decently --white long sleeved dress shirt, black slacks, and black loafers-- Kurt slicked back his short spiky hair into a more formal style, his dark brown eyes glimmering in delight. Wouldn't Jody be surprised!
He stopped by Manny's liquor store, where the guy hassled him for ID jokingly --Manny was there a year ago for Kurt's 21st birthday. Kurt picked up a bottle of good white wine before making his way to Jody's place.
Kurt leaned on her doorbell while he balanced paperbag and wine bottle in his arms, and heard an annoyed sigh from behind the door. Despite that bad omen, he decided to suck it up and grinned as Jody opened the door. "Surprise!" he greeted. "Happy anniversary!"
Jody did not look happy.
