Well said indeed. The only time in my life I've experienced that primal fear sometimes called "seeing the elephant" in the backcountry was while hiking with Lady P in the Canadian Rockies. Banging the trekking poles together to make noise in case of nearby grizz and thinking that if one attacked I was going to take the hit and shout at her to get the fuck up a tree and I loved her was not a pleasant state of mind. That was the only time in my life outside of military stuff when I felt like I really should be carrying a high-caliber, high-velocity firearm in order to be safe.

Eh, I don't think you have much to worry about there, Vette. Even the most committed of greenies would understand that you took a hike in Yellowstone and regretfully had to kill a bear that attacked you. There are some on the very fringes, like PETA and Earthfirst! that might think "Well, we're on their planet so we deserve to die," but they're few and far between and marginalized even by us mainstream green types.

That is fucking crazy! How do you do that- get attacked by a Grizz and three babies? They're endangered here- they must have more of them in Russia.
I've never been attacked by a bear- I watched one attack my cousin's dog and ran like a bitch- because it was endangered so I didn't want ot shoot it, and without shooting it, it's, you know a fucking bear so I ran from that shit. And that wasn't a hungry mama and her cubs, that was one bear.
That's some scary shit right there! Was there nothing her mom could do? I couldn't imagine sitting there helpless while your kid was eaten by a bear- this is the most fucked-up thing I've read in a long time.
One time on the local news I saw that this bear had robbed a chick. It broke into her kitchen by ripping the door down and proceeded to steal all her food. She got home, thought it was a human robber, saw it was a bear, went back to the car and called animal control. They came and tranked it, and took it back to the woods or whatever, and she got all pissed off, because it had caused a ton of damage, ripped open her door, turned over the stove, ripped the door off the fridge and a bunch of the cabinets, and she just had to eat that cost.
It didn't eat her fucking kid.

They're considered "threatened" in the US. Endangered in Canada.
But in Russia, there is a very stable population.

Or if not, at least call Animal Control before your mom. Seeing as how they're professionals they probably have a better chance of getting your screams out of their heads and moving on with their lives.

In the area where my cabin is, the hunting regs for Brown/Griz bear are:
No closed season.
One bear per regulatory year.
No tags required for residents.

We're suffering through a bear invasion where I'm at this year. The bears have had two excellent breeding years and the adults are running the two year olds out of the nest. Albeit these are black bears here, they can be a serious nuisance when they're hungry and in new territory.

Yes, although I've been in many, many situations where I knew that if I needed help it was going to be far too late. In fact, many times I've been that help, and I know from that side that it's painful, but cell phones would not have changed the outcome.
