Hipsters. WTF ?
"Americans so over hipsters
Just 16% of Americans have a favorable opinion of hipsters, a new PPP poll on the much-discussed subculture shows. 42% have an unfavorable opinion of hipsters, and 43% aren’t sure. Democrats (18% favorable, 34% unfav) are twice as likely as Republicans (9% fav, 48% unfav) to have a favorable opinion. Voters age 18-29 have a favorable opinion of them (43% fav-29% unfav), but very few voters over age 65 do (6% fav -37% unfav)."
It's worth reading (or at least looking over) the report HERE.
Now, would some kind sould tell me what is meant by this word?.
As I recall, it means trousers/ slacks cut to ride at the hip.

A "hipster" is someone that doesn't do something because it is popular, or by proxy, does something because no one else is doing it, just for the sake of being different.

Or, according to the poll questions, either "make a positive cultural contribution to society" or " soullessly appropriate cultural tropes from the past for their own ironic amusement."
I think this is a pretty good example of a skewed poll.
Like a lot of labels, the term "hipster" probably means different things to different people. I figure I know a couple who would call themselves hipsters, but I don't think they drink Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Hipster is one of those words that seems to have a different definition depending on who you speak to. Ultimately it's a word for "someone I don't like". At least, that's how I hear it used most often.

another words, a hipster is someone who does their own thing and not what everyone else does.
No wonder almost 50% don't know what to make of that.

I just go with the immortal words of popeye
I yam what I yam and that's all that I yam.
Anytime someone feels the need to categorize what everyone else is it means that person is a fucking idiot who can't find his own way

Heineken? Fuck that shit! Pabst! Blue! Ribbon!
And yeah, I assume the poll is skewed, too. Of course if you use the worst term to describe someone, you're not going to get a great result.

So, the poll asks for opinions on a hopelessly vague term, and the majority of respondents say they aren't sure what their opinion is.
Garbage in, garbage out.

Hipsters = lame indie bands whose records are awash with synthesizers and other studio trickery to cut the balls off the music, ironic facial hair, work low level i.t. jobs, skinny jeans.

Come to think of it, "hipster" is one of those words that I don't hear often in real life, yet it gets thrown around a lot in magazines and so on.

In my observation, the "hipster" that arouses so much ire and bile are NOT individualists. They are not rugged groundbreakers or inspired creators. I have an assortment of nieces and nephews (not all, thank gawd) who qualify. They fancy themselves above and beyond the rat race of life. They are aloof observers, making snide comments and, to use the vintage phrase, laughing up their sleeves at everyone. And it's not the hot, sharp satire of a cutting wit. It's a lazy, flacid sneer.
Unlike other counter-culture groups (beatniks, hippies, pick your favourite) who reject mainstream life, these "hipsters" don't have an alternative to offer. They don't actually believe in anything but trying outdo each other with half-ass mockery. Sort of...cultural parasites.
It's easy to understand people's aggravation with the subspecies. After an hour spent in the company of my younger relatives, listening to nonstop grunting chuckles at life, the universe and everything, I want to reach for a rubber mallet and try to rouse some sincere emotion in them.

"Hipster" is a derogatory term, not a term that people use to self-identify (as opposed to geek, jock, hip-hop, etc.). As such it isn't surprising there is a negative connotation.
In usage, it seems to refer to that subtype of cultural-conscious twentysomething that always raves about bands you have never seen and then criticizes them when they become popular, whose favorite movie is always something not out on theaters and unavailable on DVD, and who obsessively follows popular culture and fashion for the sole purpose of mocking it.
I always knew a few people like that in college, and on bad weeks, I was one. Only then, the preferred ironically-bland cheap beer was Rolling Rock.
