OOC -- "The Village"

"The Village"

Introduction

(Inspired by the M. Night Shyamalan movie)

Time: Current Day

Setting: A closed, 9,000 acre wilderness area. It is comprised of "rings" of terrain: Second Growth Timber, which surrounds Old Growth wilderness, which surrounds The Village, which includes 300 acres of pasture and farm land.

Story: 20 years ago, 8 married couples and (for some) their toddler-age children -- some blood relations, others adopted -- abandoned the modern world and began new, old lives away from electricity, telephones, cars, etc. The common thread between them was my PC.

My PC: A billionaire who saw "civilization" as any but. After losing several family members to violent crimes, he joined a Support Group; seeing the great good it did for him, he was soon leading one and becoming educated as a grief counselor.

The Village: My PC saw the "civilized" world as the problem and felt that no amount of counseling was ever going to "cure" these people of their heart break. He convinced those who would become The Elders that their children would live better lives away from the terrors and negative influences of The Outside World. He used his fortune to purchase a remote, isolated wilderness, upon which he established The Village; then the Elders said goodbye to their friends and families, sold everything they owned, and boarded a plane ... to an unknown land and a new life.

Available characters:

--- The Elders: The 16 adults who originally settled the Village. The youngest at the time of The Village's establishment was 16 but most were mid-20s to 30s, making them all 36+ today.

--- The "Of Age" Children: Includes the original toddlers, some of whom have sub-conscious memories of the technological world (tv, wii, computers); and "The Pure", those children born in the early years of The Village, all now "of consent age" teenagers.

--- The "Minors": Additional children, "The Pure of Heart and Mind" as my PC calls them in his journals. (These "children", obviously, cannot be involved in any sexual situations; they are simply included because this is a story about families.)

--- The Protectors: A group of individuals in The Outside World who help maintain the Children's illusion of a non-technological world.

NEW (4 July 2011): New information will be preceded by the word "NEW" and the date it was added in red. I encourage writers to come back and check the OOC occasionally for updates, edits, and/or new information.

Posting Guidelines

These are guidelines, not rules. It would be nice if all writers would adhere to them as closely as possible, simply so we are all on the same page, figuratively.

1. Reply Length: Max 700 words per writer per day.

2. Reply Frequency: Each character should be posted for at least every other day. This is variable: if your character is only secondary and not holding up the story, no worries; however, if your character is holding up the story and has been for a day or two, you need to post soon ... as in now, today! Or, the host will post for you. (If you expect to be absent, don't start any collaborations that will prevent the rest of us from having fun.)

3. Spelling and Grammar: Use spell check and give your replies a quick proof read. You aren't being graded, but then again, no one wants to have to work at understanding your reply.

4. Sexual Content: This is not particularly a sexual role play, but I'm sure that there will be some intimate or erotic acts at some point. If you are interested in a romantic liaison with another character, get together with the other writer and discuss the details.

5. Pictures and Images: I like pictures, particularly of the characters themselves. You don't have to have one, but if you do use one, no famous people please. And no anime, etc. (If you need a pic, I can help you with that.)

6. All the normal RP rules apply (god mode, courtesy, etc.)

7. OOC Comments in the IC: If you feel you need to add an OOC comment to your IC thread reply -- to explain something, for example -- you are welcome to do so. Just make it brief, and put it either at the end or beginning of the reply. I would prefer you didn't add OOC comments like "I'm having fun" or "will be gone for two days" to the IC thread; it's not the place for it.

8. Communication between writers: Do not post anything in the OOC thread unless told to (ie, Character Profiles). The OOC -- and certainly the IC -- are not for writer communication; that's what PMs are for. Thank you.

Character Sheet

Name: Johan Dent

Gender: Male

Age: 62

Description (& Pic): (coming soon)

Marital/Family Status: Widower; lost three children to violence

Skill(s): Psychologist, Grief Counselor; more below.

Pre-Village Background (if applicable):

--- Johan comes from a wealthy family and, in his 20s, inherited half a billion dollars, which he quite easily turned into 2 billion dollars before he was 40.

--- He lost his wife and three children to acts of violence. It was psychologically devastating to him; he entered grief counseling, then began his second stint of University, studying to become a Grief Counseling psychologist.

--- He came to the conclusion that the only way to save people from the lasting trauma of violent tragedy was to take them away from the "civilized" world that was the source of that tragedy. The solution was to "get away".

--- He sunk his money in to purchasing a remote section of land, then creating a "secret organization" with the sole purpose of keeping the "modern" world -- aircraft, cars, hikers, etc. -- away.

--- "The Village" was born. It is 300 acres of land, farmed with pre-20th Century technology, surround by wilderness, totaling 9,000 acres.

Village Background: Johan is the Grand Elder and, essentially, a dictatorial monarch. While what he says goes if he wants it to, he rarely vetoes a decision by the Council of Elders.
