He whispered an archaic incantation and his clothes turned to black smoke that drifted off his body and disappeared as it reached the floor.

Matt was annoyed at being left unsatisfied, but let it go. Crystal had been through a lot in a very short time, so he let her drift off to sleep. She had mentioned work, that wouldn’t do. If he was going to make her dependent on him he couldn’t have her working.

The warlock searched her home and quickly found a number for the café she mentioned. “Is this the place of employment for Crystal Marna? Yes, I’m a family friend of hers and I’m afraid she’s quite sick. She’s asleep. If she’s well, but I’m taking her to the doctor tomorrow. Goodbye.” There was one thing taken care of. He didn’t know if they really believed him, but they weren’t the ones he was really concerned with.

Next was her. Matt unplugged the alarm clock by her bed and turned out the light. Then almost as an afterthought, he began another incantation. He was lucky everything he’d done today was small or someone might have tracked him with it. The foreign words were low and lilting and made Crystal stir for a moment. When he finished though she was deep asleep and Mathias knew she would stay that way until late morning.

The warlock wished he could use this time to study his old tomes in search of what exactly he’d found in her. However they were all at home and any means quick enough would attract too much attention. Instead he settled for learning a bit about her. He carefully went through her things as she slept soundly, looking at her driver’s license, bills, art, and clothes. Any little thing might help. He helped himself to the lunch she had thoughtfully prepared, throughout the day.

By nightfall he’d found everything he wanted, put it all back and was ready to sleep. The night drive here had been hard on him and Matt found himself looking forward to sleeping next to his little treasure. He mended her clothes were they lay on the floor with another simple spell and slipped into bed next to her. Under the blankets she curled against him in her sleep and he put an arm protectively around her.

“Sweet dreams,” he whispered to her before dozing off himself.

As Crystal sleep, she dreamed. There was something in her dream that was after her. Wanting her dead & gone from the world, though she was used to that. She was used to running and fighting in her dreams.

She was at the old park she grew up in and a short stubby person was fallowing her. She started to run but the soon short person turned into a very tall man. Very skinny all the way to his bones. But he chased after her any way. He always had an evil grin but this time he was speaking. He said this time he had her, he would not give up on killing off her like he did her family and those she cared most about.

Next moment she was trap under a book case. She didn't know how but she was and the sharp shelf's were digging into her back. She saw the tall man holding another by the neck. He was limp and not moving. When the head fell from the body and rolled to her she but all wanted to scream. The face she saw was Matt. The evil man then slowly walked and about to finish her. Her eyes shut and started to scream, she knew what was coming but didn't want to see the end. ~

Crystal's room was freezing and in the now small cold body was crying and screaming. She moved in her deep sleep as red marks were coming and forming on her skin. A shadow from outside the window was searching. Passing over the window trying to enter but couldn't for her old grandmothers spell was still intact and keeping what ever the evil spirit was, out of the house and from finding its victim.

Her scream woke him up. At first he figured it was just a nightmare, but then he second guessed that idea. There was too much special about her for this to be coincidence. He sat up for a moment in the dark and as he watched he felt the haunting presence of dark spirits outside. Something suddenly slammed itself against her window, but the glass didn’t break. There were spells in place that he hadn’t noticed before. Crystal’s grandmother’s work he assumed. She had known what her grandchild would be in for.
Even trapped outside though they were still getting to her. Mathias watched as red marks appeared on her skin. The old woman obviously hadn’t been skilled in Oneiromancy, the magic of dreams. Sitting up next to her Mathias closed his eyes. He could feel Crystal in her feverish sleep next to him, but then he went deeper. For some reason he couldn’t push into her dream, but he could feel her fear and the cause of it just the same as feeling her warm body shivering next to him. He began weaving spells like barbed wire around the girl’s mind to discourage her unwelcome visitor, but they were broken as they formed. Something stronger was required.

Deep in meditation Matt’s breathing slowed, and then his heart. His body appeared perfectly calm, but it was all a lie covering up the battle his spirit engaged in. The warlock wrapped his dark soul protectively around the nightmare plagued girl. The oppressive force seemed familiar, but Mathias didn’t take the time to find out why. The threads of power from each demonic contract fed his power and using everything he had he stabbed into the darkness of the ether at the assailant.

Taking a sudden deep breath Matt returned to the waking world. The clatter that had grown at the window had stopped. The warlock opened heavy eyes. He was going to need her power just to protect the both of them if anonymous attacks like this one happened. For now, however he needed to sleep, to recover. He didn’t notice the toll his defense had taken though. Deep black circles under his eyes and a trickle of blood from his nose would reveal it in the morning though.

Crystal's dreaming had stopped. Turned black as time passed. She laid there still waiting for the end to come but it never did. Opening her eyes she saw light and felt warmth wrap around her. Trees and grass all around her. The sun started to rise to bring more light and to reveal an angel that was standing before her. An angel with black wings. The sun would show who he was but she woke up before she could know.

Crystal felt a warm body protectively behind her with strong arms wrap around her. She looked to her clock and it said it was two in the afternoon. Of the time and remembering having to work she goes to quickly sit up to dress but the arms locked in place wouldn't let go. "I have to get to work! Janet is probably on her way right now worrying about me! I gotta call her.." Finally tickling her way free, Crystal began tripping over her clothes and socks and try to remember where she had her work clothes last.

Matt followed her out of bed after she escaped from his embrace. Catching up with her he put his hands on her shoulders to stop her rushing about. He looked a little worn out still and there was dried blood on his nose, but his voice didn’t indicate that he was tired at all.

“I’ve already called the café for you and told your boss you were sick and wouldn’t be making it in today. She told me to say she hopes you feel better soon. After everything you just went through I thought you needed a day to recover.” He reached up to push a little of her silver hair out of her face and gave her a soft smile.

“Besides,” he told her reaching up and gently touching one of her new ears, “I’m not sure how well this Janet would take your new look.”

She turned and faced him with only socks, undwear and a silk thin bra on. She was surprised he would call and do such a nice thing. "Yes... I soppose your right.. Knowing Janet she would scream or use the cute ears to get more costomers...." When Matt touched her ear, her legs felt weak. Her eyes closed and felt as if to free fall right into his chest. Crystal laid her hands onto his chest and felt like purring. Soon as she thought that her stomic growled. "Um.. Right food.. I should make us food.."

Looking up at him then turning away was when Matt was able to see the scared marks onto her back. The red line's looked as if sharp shelfs had dug into and bit into the skin. Their were also old scares as well with the new angry red ones as she walked away.

Matt muttered a quick spell as he rose and a dark green robe formed around him as he got out of bed. He was so used to doing it in his own home he didn’t think twice about it.

“Wait Crystal,” he said putting a hand on her shoulder to stop her. His fingers gently traced to marks on her body, first the faint ones, but then he gingerly touched the newest ones. “I’m sorry I couldn’t stop these. I tried, but I’m not as strong here as I am in my home. “ Suddenly realizing she might not understand what he meant he decided to try to explain.

“Someone was attacking you in your dreams. They’re hurting you and I tried to stop it, but … How long has it been happening?”

Crystal looked up to him and couldn't speak for a moment or think with how much Matt looked like some Greek God or dark Prince in that robe. Her mind came back to the front when he touched her and warmth spread through her. She closed her eyes for a moment when she took a breath & sighed out. When it seemed she wouldn't speak her ears gently sighed down on her head then she finally did.

"The first time was on the night of my fifth birthday. I was dreaming i was on my own little planet, safe and sound until a dark mist started to swallow it. I ran for a nearby tower and climbed to the top."

She turned and sat down at the foot of the bed. Breathed slowly before she spoke again. "As the mist rose and ate at the bars of the tower, the top collapsed so i fell facing down turds the ground as i fell. There was a bar sticking out as i fell and i reached for it... I didn't know there was another bar sticking up for it was camouflaged. The second bar slipped up through my hand and i even though i felt the pain i had no voice to scream..." Crystal opened her right hand and there was a faint white one inch ring in the palm of her hand. Her body slightly shook. "When i finally woke up there was no hole but there was plenty of blood dripping down my arm. I never told any one.. And i never told my grandmother about that night..."

Crystal stared at her hand and her mind slipped back deep inside as she recalled that night waking right before the sun rose. She didn't make a sound from the pain. Instead she had sneaked to clean herself up and the bed sheets.

Matt slowly wrapped his arms around Crystal and held her. “I’m sorry. You’ve been through a lot, but Crystal … it will only get worse now. Your power is awake and they will know that. I don’t know who they are yet, but I’ll do everything I can to find out. I know this is sudden, but I don’t know if I can protect you here. I think your grandmother put some wards against evil up, but they’re fading. I saw them when I first came in, in pieces across your apartment. I can protect you, but not here. Only with my tomes, the spells in place in my home, and the power I have there can I guarantee your safety.”

Whatever was after her knew what he knew and wanted her for himself. If he left her here she would be in danger and he could lose her. That was unacceptable. He hoped she came willingly, but he would take her by force if she left him no choice

Crystal looks up to him and wonders if going with him would be good idea or not. "I... need to think... i need a shower and.. ill make us something to eat before deciding ok?" She gives a hug and lingers before walking away to the bathroom. She gets confused of why she didnt want to let go of him but after a shower and warm food maybe would help think better.

Her cat rubs himself around Matt's legs as Crystal showers, taking her sweet time in the hot water that feels much too good on her burning back. The cat stares at him with too much intelligent eyes. He bites onto the tail of the robe to show where Crystals dearies were kept. He paws at a dark covered book and it falls to the floor landing open. "Dear Whoever... another dream another scare. Grandma wasn't here and im glad of that... this time i was running from a laboratory, in a dream of course.... and that same strange short man was shooting me with a weird gun.. he didn't get me. This Time... but i did trip and scratch up my knee again.. .." The book was filled with dreams, one after the other. The title at the front of the book was marked as "Dreams #4".

After the cat had seen the "good" job of showing where more of her books were kept he thought he would mew till he got his treat of fish that crystal had promised him the day before.

After a very long shower she finally emerged from the shower in only a shier knee long nighty as she starts to make them something to eat.

Such a curious creature it is. Crystal’s cat literally lead him by the robe to diaries of hers. While she showered Mathias read. He pored over the books reading each entry carefully for clues. A strange feeling he knew the attacker continued to nag at him as he picked up clues from her writings. A particular man seemed to return to her dreams many times, though not every time. The settings of the nightmares changed drastically, but certain subtle themes kept returning. It reminded him of first investigating her apartment. He could see the puzzle pieces to his competitor’s identity, but they didn’t quite fit together yet.

When he heard Crystal finishing up in the shower Matt carefully returned the books to their proper places. When he took her he needed to remember the cat Garfield as well, he was proving quite useful already, whatever he truly was. The warlock smiled when Crystal emerged in her nightie. She was already so comfortable with him. She was naturally falling into the place he wanted for her.

“Crystal, it’s not a permanent move. I know you must have a lot here you don’t want to leave, but this only has to be until I can know you are safe.” It wasn’t true, but he could tell she was having trouble deciding. The cat eared woman had quickly busied herself starting cooking for them and hadn’t said much yet.

“I couldn’t live with myself if I knew I could have helped you, but instead you were really hurt or worse … Let me take protect you, Crystal.”

As she cooked, she wondered. ...maybe a temp change wouldn't be so bad... She thinks and wonders but still cant get herself to think of leaving. Even if a short while. "The foods ready.." She sets up the plates on the table with milk.

Crystal nibbles onto her bottom lip and stares down at her food as she sits there. She glimpse at Matt a few times when he wasn't looking then back at her food. She wasn't sure what she should even say. Or to even ask... Crystal has never been away from home for no more then three days at a time.

"Um... what.. kind of place.... do you live in?" She hoped that he wasn't the type that live in a rich house, or had staff to run his home. Crystal would hate to order people around.
