National Nude Day (July 14)
themes: public nudity, exhibitionism, etc.
starts: June 20
closes: July 16
winners announced: July 23

There is a long gap between Earth Day and Nude Day but I am starting this thread now for those who wish to be well prepared for the next themed contest.

As before, this thread is to encourage authors to write and enter, to support them when the muses fly away, to sympathise when trolls attack, and to shamelessly beg for votes.

For anyone who hasn't entered a themed Literotica contest before:

The advantages are that once you enter, your entry and all your writing gets more attention, votes, feedback and PCs than it would otherwise get. You also get support from members of the Author's Hangout.

The disadvantages are that you will also attract unwelcome attention from trolls and unenlightened critics. The sweeps of duplicated and illegal votes can cause heartbreak. You will probably curse the marking systems and fail to understand how they could possibly have done that to you. It can be a bumpy ride. If you want to know HOW bumpy, read one of the previous contest support threads.

Please ignore the outrageous unsubstantiated claims; the moaning, wailing and gnashing of teeth that occur in this thread over the contest and voting systems and concentrate on the benefits of writing contest entries. You can use the ignore function to remove those people who irritate you most from this or any thread.

If you really want your writing to improve, critics will be a factor. Entering a themed Literotica contest is one of the easier ways to get noticed.

If in doubt, go for it. You have nothing to lose but your virginity, and if you haven't lost it yet, what are you doing here?

Og

PS. And you could be eligible for the Author's Hangout Last Place (tm) Contest and win nothing but the awe and esteem of your fellow-writers.

In before the trolls!

Actually have an idea or two for this one already.

But, I've had ideas that never turned into stories before :p

We'll see what happens :D

Personally, I think Lit should change some of their contest themes, because between Earth Day, Nude Day, and Summer Lovin, a lot of them explore the same outdoor theme.

Always something that can be discussed. I think you may have a hard time getting Laurel to back away from Earth Day and Nude Day, though. Then, that leaves a question of what to put in place of Summer Lovin' -- and it was only introduced a couple of years ago.

It's been suggested many times that a category theme would be a good idea. It would take a few years to cycle through them all at one per year, but at least every author's preferred category would get a chance.

Perhaps choosing categories with few wins in themed contests but high average readership to start with, as those would be the categories most likely to inspire reader participation while giving categories at a disadvantage in the themed contests a chance to shine.

Or maybe a vote during the year-end awards to choose the category for the upcoming year?

I've never approached it from that perspective. I've been concentrating on category tendencies, sweep effect on final results, etc.

I haven't been tracking views with regularity for very long either, and that would really be necessary to get a bead on what they might bring to Lit.

Laurel has posted that the contests are primarily for author enjoyment, though. I believe it was in last year's Earth Day thread.

EDIT: Correction, Nude Day last year.

Hi all! :rose:

The contests are not really about "generating traffic", as I suspect the majority of readers are unaware of our contests (though in the future we are planning ways to make these sorts of events more known to the average Lit reader). This special contest - like the Survivor contest, like the monthly contests - exist because authors asked us to have these sorts of events. They asked because they enjoy them, because they find participating in contests to be fun.

Not everyone finds the contests fun. They aren't compulsory, so anyone who doesn't enjoy them is free to not play along. Those who do enjoy them should feel free to have as much fun as they like! For those who enjoy the contests - please realize that there are those who enjoy complaining. They can do that - that's they're hobby, too! That doesn't mean you have to let those who don't like contests ruin your fun. One of the most important things I've learned in the 11 years running Lit is it's important to distinguish between those with an actual issue and those who like to vent. It's a lesson that's helped me both here at Lit and in other aspects of life.

As for the other point - I've yet to hear a solid argument in favor of limiting how many entries an author can submit to a contest. The vast majority of readers don't care who submits what - they vote for the stories they like regardless of who wrote them. and past contests have not shown that submitting more stories unfairly increases an author's chances of winning. If someone has a rational reason why entries should be limited, please explain either via PM (as I may not make it this way any time soon) or on another thread so that the Nude Day contest folks can go back to discussing the upcoming contest.

Thanks as always to Ogg for giving the contest authors a place to brainstorm! :rose:

Maybe it's best to look at the contests from Lit's perspective, whatever that is.

Why does Lit hold the contests? What are their benefits for Lit? And are the contests continuing to deliver "the goods," whatever those might be?

Does Lit have a reason to make a change? It might be that the contests are doing better than ever for Lit (in its judgment) despite the topic repetition. Or are the contests delivering diminished returns?

Dark, you've been tracking things for years. Can you seen any evidence one way or the other to judge the success of the contests?

Actually, I've had no trouble coming up with ideas for Earth Day, Nude Day, and Summer Lovin'.

After writing 30 stories for Valentine's Day, that may be my favorite theme. Halloween is a good one, too. The winter one is wide open. That encompasses just about everything.

So far I'm working on a few stories, Siblings Get Naked for Nude Day in the incest category. Incest always a crowd pleaser (lol).

Mother's Nude Day Sexual Fantasy. This is a really good one. I can't wait to post this one. C'mon seriously, you gotta have a Mommy story.

Opposites Attract and Recoil Back is in the Erotic Couplings. They connect at the dog park. That's alway fun meeting someone who likes dogs instead of cats (lol). Don't get me wrong. I like pussies, but being that I'm a dog (my avatar), I'm not crazy about cats.

Nude Day, A Pervert's Anal Field Day, in the anal category, course. Huh? What do you think?

Have You Been Flashed or Flashed? This is posting in the Exhibitionist and Voyeur category. This is my favorite story, thus far. I'm having fun writing this one.

Okay, you better sit down for this one. Ready?

Lady Gaga, Nude Day, Renee & Todd in the Loving Wives category (lol). Oh, boy, I can't wait to read the comments on this one. Oh, yeah. This is a good one.

I'm having the time of my life writing stories. This is so much fun.

For me, I'd like to see a bit stiffer requirements in the entry rules. If it's a story for "nude day," don't accept anything because nudity is an incidental feature; require that the story be, in fact, a nude day story. Then the contest would be a bit of a challenge, rather than merely a venure for whatever stories one might have that can be squeezed in.

Sucking hind tit, at second in the rankings? When it was third in the rankings the previous day?

Listen Mister Cheater, I’m not unhappy sleepy won. As I said in the EARTH DAY thread. Better than most of the alternatives. But here are the numbers as of the last 3 days. And the most obvious point when you look at them is not that sleepy was sixth on two of those days but the huge last minute change in its score that was required for it to win.

And no I don’t believe that some honest sweep of illegal votes catapulted sleepy into first place. The QUEEN :cattail: put her there! For her own reasons. The winners of the EARTH DAY contest do not reflect the opinions of our readers – they instead are simply choices made by the PALACE!

And since I’m here I’d just like to take this opportunity to thank the LITEROTICA readers who read, voted, commented, emailed and favorited my story in the EARTH DAY contest.

And while I had no expectations of winning (or desired to) it would be remiss of me not to point out that my humble little effort did very well indeed (according to our readers anyway). It did as follows in the various categories:

#5 in VIEWS
#3 in COMMENTS
#2 in VOTES received
#2 in story FAVORITES
#8 in overall RATING

And finally, and perhaps most gratifying

#1 in being named FAVORITE AUTHOR during the contest period. (FYI 86 literoticans named me a “favorite author” so far in April while 3 “unfavorited” me.

Thank you all! It's your support that makes it all worthwhile.

From April 27th 2010 – Ogg’s NUDE DAY 2010 thread…
Dark's Earth Day entry was definitely not 'cheating'. It was, however, against the spirit but not the letter of the rules and I hope he decides not to repeat it next year.

From the first page of Ogg’s 2010 NUDE DAY thread. And while the numbers shown below have changed the problem hasn’t. It is amazing to see how the totals have changed – Many Feathers and alwayswantedto have added some 800 “favorites” in under a year.

Well freddie :D my friend you have a rare genius in getting to the heart of every problem. And that is that (outside of sarahh and a few others) we have…

NO CELEBRITIES – NO FAVORITES – NO BEST SELLERS – NO LITERARY SUPERSTRS

competing. Instead the Special Contests have become the playground of nobodies and wannabes – of ALTS and SURVIVALISTS.

Here they are – the LITEROTICA CRÈME de la CRÈME – and it will only be these greats who can revitalize reader interest in these contests:

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if every one of these giants produced a work for this upcoming contest? If finally our reading public were treated to their works.

Perhaps we could inaugurate a new contest system – with different divisions. Like soccer perhaps. There would be a First Division – a division reserved for the greats. The FAVORITES Top Writers joined by 1000+ VOTE CLUB and 100+ COMMENT CLUB MEMBERS.

A Second Division for the average, run of the mill writers.

A Third Division for ALTS.

A Fourth Division for AH posters but non writers (we’d rate their posts).

A Fifth Division for the SURVIVALISTS.

Then finally a rookie division.

This way everyone would be competing with their equals. It would be fairer for all of us. And hopefully will encourage the BESTSELLING authors to come back.

I think there are some good ideas in the above!

The chief issue of author discontent seems to be fraudulent voting; there's also concern about the difficulty some genres experience in contests. Improving how voting is conducted and addressing the sense of exclusion some writers feel might go far toward increasing author enjoyment. If Laurel says that "The contests are not really about 'generating traffic', as I suspect the majority of readers are unaware of our contests," then why not drop the voting and go over to judging panel? And then occasionally substitute genre-specific contests for some of the often-repeated topics?

Probably a "where do I find the time?" thing. Everything is already in place for the contests to run as they are. Every contest would probably require seeking out a new panel, real life and schedules being what they are.

It likely wouldn't change the complaints much, anyway. Then, it wouldn't be complaints that the contests were "fixed" by the sweeps, but rather by loading the panel with "plants".

Yep. Although I would say, if they're looking for judges, they could do worse than recruit from among respected Lit authors. It also would elminate the time and effort they put into the contest sweeps.

That's guaranteed. No method is perfect; the fixing complaints will be there no matter which is used. I'm talking about addressing reasonable concerns expressed by authors. I think that the happier most authors are the less traction that complainers will have.

Doubt there's really much time or effort in the sweeps. They seem consistent enough, with only a few outliers that also tend to follow patterns, which leads me to believe that they're really only recoded every so often based upon information gathered. That makes it a point, click, and walk away operation.

I certainly wouldn't argue against it, and I doubt you could find many who would. There have been a few of us who have discussed it before, and even considered running a concurrent contest with the normal ones, judged by a panel.

There's where you run into the problem, though. Nobody's schedules ever meet up for it to happen *laugh*

I'll take your word for that. But that raises a question. Do you think all stories are swept equally in a contest? Not equally in terms of number of votes swept, but equally in having the the same rejection rules applied?

Absolutely. However, I think that certain categories get hit harder due to the voting patterns of the readership. The sweeps obviously have a heavy bias against low votes, and more of those are cast in certain categories such as Incest and Loving Wives. Add that to much larger vote totals in those categories, and you get explosive sweeps.

Consider that everyone starts reporting sweeps at the same time, often while they're in progress. Everyone is seeing votes fall off rapid-fire at the same time. That's the work of a single process running across all the stories in the contest.

My ignorance is showing yet again. Across a month's time, there wouldn't be enough available judges to make a quick pass through the stories and narrow them down to a short list based on grammar, the degree to which the story addresses the topic, and whatever other factors go into this?

I've taken it upon myself at one time to review a Winter Holiday contest. I had nobody breathing down my neck to finish it other than myself, and it was hard to find the time. There are a lot of stories to read, especially when you're doing more than just clicking the stars at the end.

It's quite the commitment, once you get into it and realize the enormity of what you've set out to do.

So how public is "public?"

...would "nudist camp" be "public" enough?

'cause I've got a half-started story that is about such a place. And a contest might actually get me to continue & finish the damn thing.

Or does "lots of people nude but sequestered from the general population" not really count?

*scratches stubble thoughtfully*

*thinks about shaving*

Does the theme have to be "life style" nudity like naturists and French beaches? Is sly exhibitionism OK? How about feelings of shame and embarrassment that lead to heightened ecstasy? I mean, does the contest focus on promoting nudism, or is it enough for the plot to center on somebody's exposure - whether he/she has good feelings about it initially or not?

Would a non-consent story about forced nudity (with a he/she secretly likes it vibe) be acceptable?

How about a Brazilian exchange student who lives with a repressed American family. He she thinks nothing of casual nudity around the house. He/she steps into the shower with family members - why waste water? Would that sort of thing be acceptable?

How about a young model who is pressured into revealing photo shoots and likes the kind of attention he/she gets? How about a model who has to content with paparazzi in the changing room when quick changes are required? How about the man/woman who leaves the web cam on in the bedroom for days and notices thousands of messages when he/she finally looks?

I ask all of the questions because I am looking for the spirit of the theme.

How about a culture that lives in climate controlled domes, and nobody wears clothes. When a sporting event or theater performance requires costume, everyone is self conscious about being clothed. There are feelings of shame and arousal caused by anti-socially concealing flesh. I may actually write that one :)

What I've always considered difficult about this contest is that it almost demands frequent reminders that this is happening on or leading up to Nude Day. Otherwise, any story where there's nekkid people running around is fair game.

There's also the fact that the whole premise of Nude Day is that nudity is natural, and not necessarily sexual. Kind of crimps the style.

I don't think public nudity or exhibitionism is a requirement, so long as the story focuses on nudity, and that Nude Day is the reason for the nekkidness. That being said, many of the stories in this themed contest trend that way, and also perform well -- far better than they do in any other contest, at least. If that's your kink and preferred writing category, then this is your contest.

Um, the reason for nudity has to be because it's nude day? A bunch of college students decide at the last minute to run a naked 5K because it happens to be on nude day. That's the sort of thing? Where is the sex and arousal? Do the boner plagued men all run behind the bouncing women?

My idea about everyone being nude and clothing being weird doesn't fit? Maybe they remember the ancient nude day by all wearing clothes on that one occasion. Would that work?

That's actually a neat little twist that I like. I would run with that, if I were you.
