A Splash of Ecstasy (Closed for yuna1981)

And there she was. Shane was almost ready to head for home when he saw her. Her bright red overcoat was drenched from the heavy rain, hair plastered to her cheeks, framing that radiant and yet shy smile. Her lips moved out of sync with the general tumult of the office party, the clinking glasses, laughs and cheers. She was probably just saying "hello", commenting about the weather, "nice party", that sort of thing, but his eyes were fixated upon those lips as closely as one would study a TV lottery announcer giving the last few digits of your winning ticket.

He curved over and leaned against a nearby wall, uncharacteristically nervous and gulping a lukewarm plastic cup of nondescript beer. Shane thought back to his conversations with her in the previous weeks, thirty second snippets in the elevator and hallway passings at the downtown office. It was just basic co-worker flirting, a way to pass the time. Or was it? She was younger, just out of college and a bit unsure. She seemed to always travel completely out of her way to his office, having an unrelated work question as a thinly veiled excuse to see him. It made him feel special, powerful, almost revered, the experienced older guy.

They talked about her latest date fiasco, meaningless office gossip, and the like. But what really echoed in his head was the closing line of a very naughty little conversation from a few days before. Those lips, enchanting, playful, when she said, "Oh I never have been able to before... but there's always the office party this weekend."

Nina hurried in from the cold rain and felt the warmth of the crowded, bustling room on her face, which had droplets of rain clinging to her cheeks. She took off her red raincoat, and brushed imaginary pieces of lint off of her little black dress, the one she wore to pretty much all of her social events. Just having graduated college, she was only slowly building up her work wardrobe.

Her eyes scanned the room, and saw Shane leaning against the wall. Her heart skipped a beat. She had been developing a huge crush on him, despite the fact that they worked together and that he was older (although perhaps these factors were actually part of the cause...)

Working her way across the room slowly, as she was stopped by several people to chat, she finally made her way over to Shane. They fell into a breezy, light conversation, but it soon stalled when Shane began to act incredibly distracted. Nina had asked him whether he had heard that one of their co-workers was pregnant, and he was looking straight at her when she said it, but he didn't acknowledge her question.

"Shane?" she queried. "Shane?" And she waved her hand in front of his face, wondering why he was so distracted.

"What's that now uh..." he stammered, clearing his throat and glancing down. Perhaps his eyes were looking at that imaginary piece of lint, or a million miles beyond into oblivion. "Oh, yes, pregnant. Tell her congrats for me. I'm sure she's very... can I get you a drink?" Shane snapped back into his normal controlled assertive self.

Without waiting for a reply, he slipped away toward the mini-bar, signaling with his eyes for Nina to follow. He busied himself with a tumbler glass, dropping in one little ice cube after another with the small unwieldy tongs. He quickly mixed this and that liqueur together without pausing to measure, deft, like an old habit. He had tended bar years ago. A man gathers countless little talents over the years, some useless, some quite the opposite.

As she approached from behind he stood again lost in thought, gazing through the delicate little beads of condensation and seeing her reflection in a million kaleidoscope eyes. A thin icy drop quivered near the rim and shimmered down onto his fingertip. "It's my special recipe. Tell me if you like it Nina." He handed her the tumbler with a warm smile. As she took her first sip, Shane absentmindedly touched his moistened fingertip to his lip.
