Out of all the millions of songs, what do you think is the greatest ever recorded (keep it to recorded music please), include both the song and the particular performer.

Obviously, its next to impossible out of all the millions but I would say what stands out to me above the rest is The Sentinel by Judas Priest. Just perfection in every way: music, vocals, lyrics, raw emotional power and imagery. Still brings chills to me when I hear it to this day.

No such animal. My favorite tends to change from album to album.

My current favorite is "Familiar Taste of Poison" by Halestorm. They're a local band and it's a good song.

Good God, you can't be serious. Out of all recorded classical music, gospel music, popular music, show tunes, R & B, folk and modern rock, you pick a piece of heavy metal garbage?

The list of the best selling albums of all time doesn't even include Judas Priest. I would have thought the album containing the "single best song of all time" would have sold more copies.

you do know Rob Halford is gay? if the fact that judas priest is one of the worst bands ever won't change your mind, maybe that will.

Why would it have sold more copies? That's like saying Bud Light is the best quality beer because its sells the most.

Yes, definitely the best song other than classical, which I'm not including as I'm limiting it to post-1920s recorded and commercially marketed songs, would HAVE to be something from the golden era of heavy metal (late 70s to early 90s). No other form of modern music has have the same combination of power, emotion, musicianship (instrumentally and vocally), aggression, great lyrics and melody.

My second choice would have been 18 and Life by Skid Row. Also, a powerful story song with great vocals. I would probably have picked something by Social D. for the third choice, though musically punk couldn't compare to heavy metal obviously, then maybe something by Willy Nelson after that.

What's your choice?

Yes, I know Halford is homosexual. I knew that in the 80s before he came out. My friend's mom worked at a resort in Arizona where he would come with his boyfriend on vacation. She verified it. I was shocked at first, but so what? I am against the gay political agenda, I don't care what people do in private.

He's the greatest rock singer of all time and one of the greatest vocalists ever. He could break glass with his voice. He kicks ass

I bet you were devastated when you heard about Elton as well.

You're it
No, you're it
Hey, you're really it
You're it
No I mean it, you're it

Say it
Don't spray it
Spirit desire (face me)
Spirit desire (don't displace me)
Spirit desire
We will fall

Miss me
Don't dismiss me

Spirit desire

Spirit desire [x3]
We will fall
Spirit desire
We will fall
Spirit desire [x3]
We will fall
Spirit desire
We will fall

Everybody's talking 'bout the stormy weather
And what's a man do to but work out whether it's true?
Looking for a man with a focus and a temper
Who can open up a map and see between one and two

Time to get it
Before you let it
Get to you

Here he comes now
Stick to your guns
And let him through

Everybody's coming from the winter vacation
Taking in the sun in a exaltation to you
You come running in on platform shoes
With Marshall stacks
To at least just give us a clue
Ah, here it comes
I know it's someone I knew

Teenage riot in a public station
Gonna fight and tear it up in a hypernation for you

Now I see it
I think I'll leave it out of the way
Now I come near you
And it's not clear why you fade away

Looking for a ride to your secret location
Where the kids are setting up a free-speed nation, for you
Got a foghorn and a drum and a hammer that's rockin'
And a cord and a pedal and a lock, that'll do me for now

It better work out
I hope it works out my way
'Cause it's getting kind of quiet in my city's head
Takes a teen age riot to get me out of bed right now

You better look it
We're gonna shake it
Up to him

He acts the hero
We paint a zero
On his hand

We know it's down
We know it's bound too loose
Everybody's sound is round it
Everybody wants to be proud to choose
So who's to take the blame for the stormy weather
You're never gonna stop all the teenage leather and booze

It's time to go round
A one man showdown
Teach us how to fail

We're off the streets now
And back on the road
On the riot trail

now shut the fuck up.

Based on that list Thriller is the greatest song of all time? :D
Got to be a serious candidate for best of all time.

I'm a bit more old-school though. My first thought was 'Yesterday,' by the Beatles but there's so many Beatles classics to choose from and they're not even the only contender for 'best artist' let alone 'best song.'

Then there are songs that are contenders, no matter who performs them -- J.S. Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D minor," for example.

And I would not be surprised to hear people make that argument -- not because of the sales per se, but because the number of sales increase the odds of someone coming forth to make the argument on behalf of the song.

I would have expected the "legion of Judas Priest" fans to have exposed me to that claim on behalf of Sentinel at some time well in the past. But nope. You're the first.

As for my pick, I'm one of those who could not possibly choose between the different genres (which by their nature defy comparison) or even within a single genre. As mdb said, so much depends on mood. My favorites change quite a bit.

I always assumed Thriller is a joke song. Is it supposed to be "scary"? I mean its scary from a musical perspective, but spooky? Just compare it to The Sentinel as one example. Not that any song is "scary" but at least The Sentinel is dramatic and paints bloody violent images of a street fight in a smoky backalley in some burned out industrial town. What does Thriller paint, some child molestor shuffling around a stage? Musically what is great about Thriller? Is there complex music or melody? Soaring lead vocals? Brilliant lyrics? NOTHING. Its a joke, period. The only Michael Jackson song that is even remotely not a joke that I ever heard was Billy Jean which is a little bit catchy, but that's not saying much.

As for classical, I purposely am not including it. However, there was a lot of classical influence in 80s metal.

Its a relatively obscure even among Priest songs. Their most popular song was You've Got Another Thing Coming but its one of their least good songs. The majority almost never recognize the best of anything.
