The bus stopped at the same gas station it had stopped three years ago, when Adam had left his hometown for a road trip to the states. The same place where he had decided to flee his problems and try to build a new life for himself after he had sent his stepfather to the hospital as a lesson for his too many hits on his mom.
The tough guy jumped out of the bus, realizing that much had changed in his little town. With the exception of the old gas station, the town had blossomed into a modern town. Adam hoped this was a good sign and that he had not made a mistake by moving back to Alberts. Grabbing his backpack from the luggage section of the bus, Adam walked towards home, anxious to see his mother again. With her fragile health, he would need to be careful not to scare her.
It was easy for Adam to scare people. He was a towering man who had developed an impressive set of muscles while working on boats and trains all over the country. As a football player, he always kept his body in shape but the years of travel had turned him into a man. He wore a worn out pair of jeans, a black tshirt and his red baseball cap, a gift from his best friend Michael. Adam hoped that Michael and his little sister were still living in Alberts and that he had not realized his dream of moving out of the little town.
After an evening passed with his mother, a hot meal and a shower, Adam, who had confirmed that Mike and his family were still living across the street, walked calmly to his friend's place. He knocked a few times and remembered that they kept a key under the rug. How many times had he crawled into the house to surprise Mike or his sister early in the morning using that same key?
Laughing, Adam unlocked the door and walked inside, inspecting the house. It had changed. It seemed to him that the place was less organized and that some of the old decorations were missing. He heard some noise upstairs and silently moved in direction of the noise, curious to see who he would surprise this time...
