Often it feels that many of the conversations even here in the BDSM Board try to be too politically and socially correct. It's almost like people want to make up a set of rules so that we all fit tidily in a little BDSM box. For me a big part of my joy in the BDSM community is its ability to contain so many flavours and revel in them.I like being outside the box don't you?
Do we need to have such strict criteria? What's your take?

Please be more explicit. PC seems to mean anything and everything these days, especially when someone is complaining about it.

I think some people are making more efforts to be more inclusive of other dynamics/orientations/etc.

I don't see that as being 'more PC' just.. nicer.

you are quite right it has become rather a buzzword. I suppose what I am trying to say is that when we try to force people into a set of specific norms by the use of negative comment, we narrow the field of forum . And rather than complaining about it I was actually trying to find out whether I was reading things said in posts inaccurately. It's why I wanted other people's take on it. It is very easy to missconstrue what someone writes on page when you can't hear the nuance of voice.I love reading all of the opinions.

A group isn't a group without some sense of homogeneity.

But to me, this is being PC. I feel like sometimes I'm scared I'll get berrated by making a statement that only discusses my ideas as a male Dom who is interested in female subs (the only point of view I can speak from). It doesn't mean I don't accept those other dynamics/orientations/etc. as viable and meaningful. I do accept them.

To me, only referring to one type of dynamic, or preferring one specific style of BDSM relationship isn't offensive, but some people could possibly feel left out. Granted I don't want anyone to feel bad, but if my intention is not to belittle any other type of "dynamics/orientations/etc." then there would be no reason to be upset by not having your specific dynamics/orientations/etc. mentioned every time.

Just my two cents/yen/shilings/pesos/etc.

If this makes sense, the problem isn't about "feeling left out" it's being unwillingly included.

So when you (not you, really) say something like; "All women are worthless sluts and fit only for swallowing my dick" I'm going to get REAL RATTY on your ass. (not yours though because you don't say things this way)

Likewise, if you say; "All women are beautiful precious possessions," because the point isn't saying something nice, it's saying it about ALL women. (this is an actual happenstance, BTW)

If however, you say; "The women I want around me are [sluts]/[precious]," then you are talking about yourself, not about women. And i will cheer you on.

Likewise, when women say; "I want to be put in my rightful position as a woman." WTF is that to me?

If she says; "I want to feel a sense of sisterhood with all the women who have been in this wonderful position under their Master..." that's talking about her and a group of women who share an experience. It doesn't include me, and so I am just fine with it.

And that's the reason I poke at people who refer to one BDSM dynamic as if it were shared by the whole world. You don't have to refer to every other version-- just let your readers know that this is your preference.

I definitely see what you mean. I have just been (not on Lit per say, but offline) the butt of some very angry feelings for not including every possibility under the sun in my statements. But I definitely see your points.

Although I think this statement...

If however, you say; "The women I want around me are [sluts]/[precious],"
Should read.... "The women I want around me are precious sluts." ;):rolleyes:

Hell yes, we have become too politically correct and I don't see an end in sight so it will be getting worse. People seem to be too easily offended. I think some people are just looking for a fight, to justify their abnormally pithy disposition.

These days, you can get killed by someone for saying something they "consider" offensive. They're judge, jury and executioner. They might be arrested and prosecuted for it, but you'll still be dead. And don't forget...I was fired for being a racist, just because someone said I was. Even though they had no proof, they didn't need it. Don't tell me we aren't being too PC.

Much easier to make your statements only about you, and then YOU can be the one to point out their un-PC-ness

You can say; "Are you trying to deny my individuality?"

I'm not PC.

I'm a Mac.

me too!

I wouldn't think you can even say that.

I use the words snigger and niggardly a fair bit, especially snigger.

in seriousness, every time I hear people moaning about everything being PC, it just sounds like they're pissed off because they can't call a person nigger/paki/poofter/lesbo/chink.

PC is basically a rightwing concept to articulate how the dominant culture has a perceived loss of power.

Right on sistah!

So anyway, what set of norms are you thinking about here? 'Cause I see some norms too, and maybe they're the same ones and maybe something opposite...

thank you Stella that is a really exceptionally clarifying post.

I am fond of the word nigger because it gets people riled. Thats the point of explicit language, is it not?

I read 'niggardly' in Lord of the Rings the other day and that reminded me that people don't use it because it isn't PC, and i resolved to remember the word exists, lest it slip into oblivion and be forever lost. Snigger is a certain laugh and is no more about niggers than catching is about cats. If anyone were to try censer the word snigger, they might deserve to be fucked with a rake. I would call them PC (with an angry light in my eye) and scorn their petty crimes against our wonderful language.

I think some people no longer use snigger and niggardly because the whole concept of 'PC' (as a right-wing concept as outlined above) has now made its way into the mainstream. so people who are perhaps not very educated or are ill-informed think that 'PC' is something that has been forced upon them by some kind of scary left wing thought police and so they must not say anything which can be construed as racist/sexist/homophobic.

this is why we had stupid instances in the UK of 'ba ba black sheep' being 'banned' from schools. it wasn't of course, it was just some ignorant little pen-pusher in one council department who, believing the RW myth of 'PC' thought it was better safe than sorry.

And whilst someone has every right to use 'nigger' to annoy, rile and piss people off, it doesn't make them look like some kind of edgy avant guardist, it just makes them look like an offensive, exclusionary prick.

Which is what a lot of people around here seem to miss (as in wishing it were still here). It seems to be an article of faith among some on the American right that behaving like an offensive, exclusionary prick is a right that has been taken away by the socialist left.

I have niggling doubts about all this.

My chief objection to being PC isn't that I really want to use words that offend people. I don't. But it's a slippery slope to ban words. Ban the word for a thought, ban the thought. That's how Newspeak works, as anyone else old enough to have read Brave New World might remember. Where does it stop? And more importantly, who do you trust to determine the stopping point? I trust no one that far.

And there's the ridiculousness of some manifestations of PC. There was a recent kerfluffle near me because a high school was doing a historical play that employed the word "nigger." None of the write-ups in the newspaper dared utter the word. Instead, they said "the n-word." Give me a break. We all know what that means, and we all translate "the n-word" into "nigger" in our minds.

It's silly. We can't even have a discussion about a word without using a sanitized version of it. And offensive as the word might be, it is a part of our history. Let's not sanitize history.
