Even as I walked into the lobby, the respect came pouring in the truckloads.
"Good morning, Mr Evans!" was all that was said to me as I strode through the building of OrTech, the company I had been working for since I was 18. Back then, I was just a mere cleaner. But then the system crashed and everyone began to panic, until I found the source of the problem and repaired it. Apparently, my employers had missed the MIT diploma. Slowly, I made my way up the chain, building the respect I was recieving in full as I entered the elevator, pressing the button for the floor of my new office. Eventually, I was chosen to run OrTech, because no-one else could really compare in my skills.
The doors opened and I entered a whole new world.
"Good morning, Mr Evans." repeated Roger, the old CEO's secretary. I smiled at him, shaking his outstretched hand. "Good as ever, Rog... what's the agenda for today?" He opened the folder he was carrying as we made our way to my office. "There isn't much; most of the departments will handle the work. All you have to do is sign some documents, host a few meetings and consult your new assistant."
I paused at the door, confused. "You aren't working with me, mate?" Roger shook his head. "No... since Samantha Orwell's retirement, I'm moving back to PR, maintain the company's well-kept image. Your new assistant should be here shortly." He shooked my hand again, nodding before walking away. Raising an eyebrow, I opened the door and stepped inside.
Minutes passed and, after I became comfy in the chair, my intercom phone beeped. "Sir, your assistant has arrived." said the voice of the security guard. I depressed the reply button. "Thank you, Jim, send her through."
I don't think I was prepared for what was going to happen next.
