how do i know who's online if i am not allowed to know and why am i not?

You can see who is online (if they have it allowed to show) on the very first page of the forums.
As to why some people don't allow it, they like privacy.

hey mephistophelly... never had the time chief... So here I am and i go to this part of the forum which says who's online and i get this message...
tonguenurcheese, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

See the directory at the top of the page to the left? Click on >Literotica Discussion Board>. At the bottom of the page are those members who are online that have enabled that option.

What are you using the online list for?

If you want to know if a friend's online, you can search for them directly using the member search. You could also add your friends to your buddy list (or whatever it's called) in your User CP, and that should show you who's online with just a click or two.

If you're going to use the list to send private messages to random people who appear online, think again. There are plenty of idiots (especially w/ low post counts and histories of low quality posts) who do that, and it doesn't tend to work. You'd be far better off spending your time posting on the boards so people can get a sense of who you are, then striking up conversations with those you clearly have things in common and/or have already built a rapport with in public.

When I'm viewing a thread, it automatically shows the people who have posted that are online by posting "<user name here> is online now" underneath their avatar.

If you're looking for a specific person/people, then do as SweetErika suggests.
