The years is 2010 and the world is as you see it around you now, an overcrowded technological marvel with a rapidly moving and utterly diverse population. We will begin our story in a fictitious rural town called "Royal Oaks", located over an hour from the city of Detroit in Michigan. The area is notorious for its vineyards and farmland, with suburban and urban centers at least an hour's drive away.
Royal Oak's population sits annually at just beyond a two-hundred, and the town's economy is remarkably stable. A great portion of the community's money comes from a modest summer-autumn market for the town's local wines. It is not unusual to have a hundred or so "tourists" from the nearby cities of Detroit and greater Michigan in the town at any given time, touring the wineries and staying in the town's subsequent pair of bed and breakfast inns.

Setting
Date: July 4th, 2010

Weather: 84 Degrees with a Mild, Eastern Breeze and Clear Skies

Town: Royal Oaks, MI

Location: Town Square - For the Annual 4th of July Parade

Stage of Outbreak: The virus has not yet become acknowledged to the public as a virus, issuing reports of "rioting". First appearing near the West Coast, it has spread within the last week throughout the majority of the United States. Reporters on the local news station seem unaware of how fast it is moving through the country or just how many areas have been affected.

The Virus [While zombie lore is extensive, portions of this are shamelessly stolen from the pages of a Max Brooks publication.]

The origin of this outbreak stems from a virus known as Solanum, and the details of this virus are few and far between. Upon entering the blood stream the virus immediately travels to the victim's brain, attacking the frontal lobe. The virus infects healthy cells and mutates them, effectively killing the brain. As the mutation spreads the brain becomes something else entirely, a hybrid organ that can utilize but is in no way dependent on the body.

The virus is 98% communicable, and 100% lethal in humans. It is not airborne, and it cannot cross species. There is no treatment.

Infection
Most commonly communicated through a bite or scratch, Solanum incubates within a short period through most hosts. Symptoms are almost immediate and violent, beginning with severe headaches that soon extend through most of the victim's muscle groups. Cramping, vomiting, shortness of breath follow. Within forty minutes the victim lacks the stamina to walk, and shortly after the victim dies.

Corpses cannot be infected with Solanum. The virus needs living tissue. It does not create life, it simply alters it into something perverse. Unfortunately, the brain is often the last organ to completely fail. Live cells within a brain are a home to the disease, which means those killed by zombie bites and attacks will almost always reanimate.

Reanimation - The Living "Dead"
Because Solanum effectively kills the victim's brain, they are no longer alive in the meaningful sense. Victims will reanimate within ten minutes after death, and no portion of their personality effectively remains. They have no memories, no emotions, and no cognitive ability.

Capabilities - The Living "Dead"
Zombies, which I will now allow as a moniker, are not superhuman. They function in ways very similar to the way human beings function. They will appear pale, with discolored skin over time. Their eyes do not turn red or gold, but instead dramatically pale in coloration.

Zombies can run as quickly as they would have as living beings, at least shortly after they have been reanimated. It has been established that as days progress and the undead body continues to decompose that motor functions gradually become more and more difficult to accomplish. A zombie's ability to run degrades into a hastened shuffle, which fully degrades in a shambling stumble. Zombies are not capable climbers, struggling in even the most simple of circumstances to scale any kind of height.

An advantage the zombie has over human beings, however, is that they do not and cannot tire. They are absolutely undaunted by long distances, they do not lose focus or intensity, and as such are extremely formidable.

The zombie can sense its prey using all of the human senses at rates comparable to human conditions at first, only degrading as decomposition or injury occurs. Removing a zombie's eyes will effectively blind it, but it will continue to use all other senses actively.

Hunting - The Living "Dead"
Zombies are relentlessly hungry and incredibly lethal. They do not sleep, they do not breath. They simply kill and devour. At night they have been proven extremely competent killers.

Mortality - The Living "Dead"
The brain of a zombie takes as long as five years to completely rot away. They do not need to ingest anything to sustain themselves. A zombie will eat itself until its stomach bursts, and continue to eat. The only way to effectively kill a zombie is to destroy the brain.

Removing limbs, destroying the spine, or injuring the zombie in any way may slow its advance but will not deter or stop an attack.

They do not breath, but their lungs continue to respirate air. This accounts for their ability to "moan" and snarl.

Royal Oak's Points of Interest

The town of Royal Oaks is not a town of corporate intrusion. It has made clear, through local zoning laws and town votes, that the Corporate interests are unwelcomed within the Town's borders. This has gone a long way in keeping the money spent by tourists visiting its vineyards and the townspeople from leaving the town.

Therefore, it operates with a series of locally owned shops and wares.

Stores
The Brick Layer's - A Hardware and Supply Store
Honest John's - A General Goods Store Meant to Assist in supplying the farmers and vitners.
Karack's Hunting and Sporting Goods - Local sporting good's store, selling primarily baseball goods and firearms.

Restaurants
Molly's - A local diner about five miles out of town.
Kipper's Tavern - The Town's Heart, a bar and restaurant.

Community Buildings
Bedding Town Hall - A small building used to hold town meetings, trials, and celebrations. The town has not seen a trial in nearly thirty years.

Royal Oaks Police and Fire Departments - Sharing a building that houses only four active police cruisers and two fire engines, the police and fire departments of Royal Oaks are all but entirely the same. The police force consists of seven people, a town elected Marshal and six deputies. Deputies take turns operating dispatch, make a modest but livable salary and collect state funded benefits and pensions.

Let's see if we can get the ball rollin' here, ehhh?

Name: Jessa Howards
Age:19
Appearance: Here. Has a small, deep red splotchy birthmark at the right side of her collarbone, usually hidden with makeup or her shirt.

Personality: Jessa's few friends in the area have deemed her a feral cat that was forced to domesticate. She can be rather sarcastic, coming off as a know-it-all and a tendency to speak before she thinks. Prone to 'angry sadness', its best to get out of her way if she starts crying; once she feels tears, she gets pissed and tends to try and hit things/people. Sometimes she can seem to arrogant, but its more a front than anything else- she's actually quite afraid of letting others get too close.

Bio: Her father is a senior reporter for one of the TV stations in Detroit, but chooses to vacation each year in the quiet surroundings of Royal Oaks. Jessa used to find it rather boring, hiding in her handheld games or music while her parents ooh'ed and aah'ed over the wineries, trees, lakes and everything else that made her want to fall asleep. As she's gotten older, she's realized that things may not be as bad as she used to think, her interests in boys growing over the years. She's started enjoying the 3 month vacations more and more, content to skateboard or bike through the little town while her parents wander the wineries. Though she has a license, she rarely gets to drive thanks to the wreck she accidentally caused back in the city with her dad's new Lincoln. Though her father has a slight bit of the local celeb arrogance, Jessa is usually quiet on his 'fame', finding his attitude more annoying than anything else.

Jessa had tried lots of sports back in high school, graduating last year. Each sport had its special something that annoyed her, or she simply ended up kicked off the team for unsportsmanlike behavior. Not her fault nobody could take a joke... Lacking the afterschool programs her dad would have preferred, she instead tried the A/V club, finding she actually liked playing with the tech around her- until she got in trouble for abusing that as well.

Special Skills:
-Even though she was bad at sports, she can still swing a bat pretty damned hard.
-She can usually get almost any electronics back into working order, with the right parts at her disposal.
-Her skateboard can get her easily through most areas, and makes for a handy "Oh shit" weapon.

I confess that while I eagerly await the TV Series, Mephy, I've not read The Walking Dead. It may very well be extremely similar.

Also, sorry for the mix up in the post. I had been writing this for a couple days and had to adapt it to the chosen setting which is Royal Oaks, Michigan.

I'd much rather play in MI then NY, Mephy. :) It was just late and my editing eye was already closing.

ETA: I suck. I went and fixed everything -after- you made your biography. Don't murder me.

Name: Owen Shepard

Height: 6'2"

Weight: 196 lbs

Age: 32

Personality:
Soft-spoken, Owen Shepard is typically quiet and polite. He is a diligent, hard-working man who takes tremendous pride in Royal Oaks and his place within the community. Typically, when the town has a gathering of any kind, Owen can be found quietly helping set up.

Biography:
Owner and operator of "Honest John's", Owen is one of the town's most quiet and helpful citizens. His father passed shortly after Owen turned twenty-six and left him the store, which had been named "Honest Bob's" after Owen's grandfather. Owen, in subtle tribute, renamed the store and has been operating as its owner ever since.

The town is Owen's only real responsibility. He spends the rest of his time hunting or hiking. A former soldier in the United States Army, he maintains his body through a disciplined regimen of exercises. The meticulous nature of his personal life, broken into a series of small rituals, seems to contradict his warm and quietly unassuming personality. Owen never raises his voice or loses his temper. He always volunteers to help anyone with anything and never had a hard word for anyone.

His father passed away when Owen was twenty six and left him the store. Owen chose to return and take his place in the town's community rather than re-enlist with the Army.

While he doesn't speak of his service often, Owen enjoyed being a soldier aside from his tours of combat duty. He has never married but frequently makes trips to Detroit on the weekend. The local rumor is that Owen has a girlfriend in the city whom he frequently visits.

Name: Asha Rai

Height: 5'6

Weight: 116 lbs

Age: 28

Personality: Asha's name means 'hope' in hindi, and she embodies that description perfectly. She is outgoing and caring, and will go the extra mile to make someone smile. She will laugh at a good joke, but is not particularly adept with sarcasm or irony. Despite this, people tend to sense her sincerity and forgive her.

Biography: Born to a Caucasian mother and an Indian father, she spent the first ten years of her life in Bombay, India. Her accent has faded and become a bit more local. However it is clear that her speech has had outside influence. She went to high school in Indianapolis, receiving top marks, before studying psychology at the University of Michigan. She is very well versed in her field, and recently left a job in Ann Arbor to come work as a schoolteacher in Royal Oaks. Despite her talkative and light-hearted nature, she is still a bit shy, being the newest person in town.

Asha is extremely well read in a great many fields, and can and will bring that knowledge to bear on any problem that faces her. She cannot help but psychoanalyze those that surround her. Even so, it is only to help them. There is nothing in that tendency but compassion. People fascinate her, and she has had many experiences with them in her work as a therapist.

Even with her credentials, she is not afraid to get her hands dirty should the need arise.

OOC: Lol, I just finished reading 'World War Z' :p

Of course! How many people are we looking at for this thread? It sounds like a lot of fun. :D

The funny part about this is that I live in the Detroit area. I could shed some light when we get down to plotting.

We're looking at around six characters right now.

Mephy is working to recruit Soru and Ahren, both extremely talented writers. I've managed to get you and Alana to join, giving us a well-rounded six to begin. I've a subtle hope we'll get two to four more but once this first six get their biographies posted I'll go ahead and open the in-character.

Lara Wilson

28Years old..5ft4..130lbs.

Vintner.

Lara is the local girl that never quite got away from the small town. She was the only child to her parents, and her relationship with them was strained as they depended on her to take over the running of their small, but successful winery, and she was educated accordingly in preparation for that. Ideally she would have prefered it to have been her own choice, but family loyalties were something her parents too very seriously. She runs ''Wilson Wines'' now for the last 3 years since the loss of both parents only months apart; her mother after a lengthy illness, her father to drunk driver.

She's friendly , but has a very quiet lifestyle, and is very private, but there is someone in her life that she sees away from town, in the city. Despite being very feminine, she's a hands on employer, participating in the running of her vineyard in every aspect. She likes order..and functions best when she's in control, especially as she's really got no one else to depend on only herself.

Her property is two miles outside town, contained behind a trademark manicured high hedging. The gates span out into two entrances..one for the vineyard, the other leading down a two mile drive past the vines to the foothills where her large single storied log cabin style family home is surrounded by willows and pine trees. She lives alone, with only a day housekeeper and gardener calling 3 times a week.

Sorry it's a bit short, but I'm almost asleep. Ice if it needs an edit let me know.

Name: Jayden Bennett

Height: 5'10"

Weight: 155 lbs

Age: 27

Personality: As a scientist, Jayden is intelligent, serious and introverted. He prefers to apply logic and reason over emotion and recklessness. Despite this, he does have a dry, sarcastic sense of humor. Often he seems wracked with guilt, though hesitant to explain why. Nonetheless, he can be kind once past the abrasive exterior. As an atheist, the concepts of religion and faith tend to make him scoff.

Biography: Little is known about Jayden's personal life as he chooses not to speak of it often. It's assumed his work mostly consumed him and has for a while. Jayden is a molecular biologist working under the jurisdiction of the US Government. He claims to be in Royal Oaks to visit family.

Jayden has kept in shape by practicing Taekwondo since a young age. Unusually, he's also a skilled marksman. Recreationally, he enjoys movies, classical music, and playing the piano.

--

Alright it's short and vague on purpose. The idea is to have him connected to the virus outbreak, but feel free to veto that if you want, or make suggestions. I also don't know how I'm going to do this since I know jack shit about molecular biology, so I may be making shit up as I go along pieced from wiki articles and whatever.

I guess the plus side is if I get too stressed out about it, he can be killed off!

Glad to have you, Ahren. The concept you offer will be a brilliant addition. Feel free to create freely.

If it's alright I'd like to throw my hat in the ring with the idea of creating a pair of tourists, possibly BF/GF or a young married couple. I could certainly swing both characters, unless someone wants to take over for one of them.

Hi, Tears.

Keep her? I've tried. I fed her well. Gave her a comfy little place to sleep. I only tried to ravish her a couple of times.

But she flew away.

Anyway, all kidding aside, I'm tremendously glad to see you, kiddo. And you're more than welcome to write your concept with us. I'm very thankful you've decided to play.

Keyword there was little. My legs were hanging off the side of the bed cause it was so small. So I flew aways.

So -that's- where I went wrong!

Well, I've talked it over with Mephy and this time you can have a great big bed!

Compromise is that you have to share it with us. Naked. Sorry about that.
