The morning was dark and depressing, and totally reflected her mood. Tammy curled up on the couch, pulling her plaid blanket tighter around her, as though its warmth could seep into her and warm her heart., while she flicked aimless through the music channels playing love song after love song .
She got up and stretched, her shoulder aching from the time she had spent in one position., and she made her way to the shower. Perhaps then she might feel better. Turning on the shower, she didn’t’ wait for the water to heat, she simply stepped under the icy water, allowing it to cascade over her back, before she threw back her head and took the icy jets right in the face, as her body formed goosebumps all over.
Gradually the water grew warmer, and she soaped her petite body and shampooed her waist length black hair, piling it high on her head, while she scrubbed her back
She had done the right thing, and she knew it. Nick was wrong, the time was not right for them, and now it never would be - she’d broken up with him. Wrapping herself with a towel, she went into her bedroom and dried herself, dressing almost mindlessly in jeans and a sweater, as her preoccupied mind replayed last night.
She had met Nick, right after graduation, while the ink on her degree in social studies had still been wet. He had swept her off her feet, and she had fallen for him hard - At six foot, three he was a full foot taller than her, his dark hair falling across his face, always seeming in need of a cut, and his dark eyes seemed to swallow her up. He was wonderful! But, she knew she needed to keep her head. She was young, and she had no intention of getting tied down at 23. She had her full life to live, and she had her Mom’s experience as a life lesson. Mom and Dad had married young, at only 22 - by 32 Dad went out and never came back, the magic having long since waned, and Tammy had no intention of falling into that trap! They had talked about it and had agreed that they would keep it simple, and just let things play out.
Eighteen months later, Nick had seemingly forgotten that, and last night he had proposed, spoiling everything!
