The beautiful woman with the beautiful voice has left this world after 92 years.

:rose::rose::rose:

She is one of the key inspirations for the character I am writing about in my current novel-in-process...

A black lady who made it with TALENT, in a white world. Sad to see her go. :rose::rose:

Yet another unique and beautiful singing voice stilled. :(

Requiescat in pace, Lena. :rose:

:rose: Good heavens! :rose: She was one of those grand ladies that I was sure was going to be around forever. :(

Looking back at the age of 80, Ms. Horne said:

“My identity is very clear to me now. I am a black woman. I’m free. I no longer have to be a ‘credit.’ I don’t have to be a symbol to anybody; I don’t have to be a first to anybody. I don’t have to be an imitation of a white woman that Hollywood sort of hoped I’d become. I’m me, and I’m like nobody else.”

Thank you for the photos, IZkiss! As a woman who was also a first in some things, I hope she knows she was admired for who she was. She was really something! :rose::(

Yes she was beautiful, and yes she could sing, but she also had such elegance, such charm, such warmth and hospitality. Watching interviews and candid moments of her, you got the sense of everyone around her felt they had been in the presence of greatness and she just said "oh sugar, just come on in and sit a bit."
