OOC: Looking to start a thread about a typical LOST-like, ship-wreck situation. A cruise ship was in a terrible storm and lost it's course, and was caught in the jagged rocks on the high elevation side of some island. Of a ship which had over 300 people only eight survived. I'm looking for various sorts of characters to be the other survivors, at least one other male who could be somewhat annoyed by and yet very interested in my character, Riley, below. This is a good setting for all sorts of adventures as they struggle to survive, and learn more about the island.

We will have no smoke monsters, polar bears, Jacob, or any of the weirdness from Lost, please.

Jump in when you're ready.

My character:
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h2/AngeliaAvrielle/bryce-dallas-howard.jpg

Madilynn Lisette Riley
Age:30
Phys descript:red, wavy hair down nearly to waist. Jade green eyes with gold and teal facets, plump lips, a small dimple in her left cheek on the rare occasions when she cracks a smile. Porcelain white skin which burns, then freckles easily but usually is plain white again within a couple of days of being careful about exposure. She's five feet, two inches tall and weighs one hundred and twenty two pounds but her weight will drop closer to 117 after a month or so on the island unless a steady food source is found.

History: Riley comes from a large Irish Catholic family who moved to America from Ireland when little Madi was fifteen years old. She still even has some Irish lilt to her speech. She was the seventh of nine children and her uncle Henry was a priest. Her family was very religious and spent much time in church. Madilynn and her younger sister Charlotte were almost expected to become nuns. Charlotte rebelled, ran off to Hollywood at age seventeen, became a model, an artist, a Buddhist, and at nineteen she shacked up with a fifty year old writer. They are still together and happy bohemians...Madilynn did what had been expected of her. After some college studying psychology and counselling she entered the convent and spent four long years of chastity and obedience, the peaceful life of a 'sister'. She was in quiet misery as her spirit shrivelled up and diminished. An internet tycoon named Will Sanders changed all that quickly. He swept her off her feet. Before she knew it she'd traded in her habit and prayer beads for a manicure and lengerie. She was a well to do housewife attempting to become a mommy.

Pregnancy did not come easily for the pair who wanted a family desperately...three miscarriages, one failed in vitro fertilization, and years of too much trial and dissappointment wore on the couple. Will secretly resented his lovely yet infertile wife and their private life suffered. He buried himself in work and meetings and avoided intimacy. Madilynn felt rejected and unwanted as a result and took consolation in online courses to study new languages and in resuming some involvement in church. But, the marriage was over when Will was caught in bed with his secretary and later got her pregnant. He wanted to be with a woman who could give him children and Madi was so hurt by his betrayal she gave him his divorce easily.

This trip was her first vacation since her divorce was finalized the previous month.

Character Bio:

Name: Ben McCarthy

Age: 35

Physical Description: Ben is about six feet tall, and around 175 pounds, dark hair and brown eyes. He is fairly handsome, but not in an obvious way. He is tanned, and while not hugely muscular, his body is athletic and well toned. He is currently wearing a loud Hawaiian shirt and khaki shorts.

History: Ben was an only child growing up, coming from a poor rural midwestern family. When he was twelve, his parents were killed in a car accident. After that traumatic experience, Ben ended up moving to Miami and living with his uncle. It was a big change for him, living in a big city, and he never quite got used to it, preferring the quiet, country life. When he was of age, he received the money from his parents' life insurance policy that had been kept in trust for him...it wasn't much, but it was enough to get him through college, where he was an English major, minoring in Education. He also joined the swim team.

After graduating, he found a job at a small High School, teaching, and he's been doing that for the past ten years. He was married for about four years, but the relationship fell apart when he found out his wife was cheating on him. They hadn't had any children, and he was somewhat grateful, given how things ended. He's been divorced for a little over five years now, and although he has dated, he's never had a serious relationship since his divorce.

Ben found his way onto the cruise ship due to odd circumstance. He'd bought a raffle tickets from a friend of his, the grand prize being two tickets for an all expenses paid, Caribbean cruise. He was lucky (or unlucky as it ended up turning out) enough to be the lucky winner. He hadn't taken a vacation in a few years. Not dating anyone at the moment, he'd given the other ticket to his friend Charlie...the one who had sold him the ticket. They'd been having fun, hanging out, having a few drinks, flirting with the available women on board ship, when the unthinkable happened...a rogue storm seeming to come out of nowhere wrecking the ship.

He'd been on deck, thrown overboard when the ship hit the rocks, and the last thing he could remember is swimming for his life, shattered wood and rubble flying all around him...and grabbing hold of a floating chunk of broken wooden wall panelling, before passing out...and waking hours later, lying on a sandy beach...

Name:Brady Jones
Age: 31
Physical Description: Brady stands six feet tall and a hundred and eighty pounds of solid muscle. He spends a great deal of time in the gym working on his physical appearance. He has blonde hair and green eyes.
History: Growing up in the ghettos of New York City, Brady Jones lived a poor life. Yet despite the set backs of being poor he was firmly taught to have manners. Forced to do all his school work and study to get the best grades. Because of this he was able to gain a scholarship and off to College for a degree in business. This degree catapulted him into business success. He was offered a job as a lucrative new firm and with his smarts was able to build them up rather quickly. Word of his success there traveled quickly through out other financial firms and soon enough he was being sought after by all of them.

So began a series of jumping around only committing to one place for a year then jumping to another when more Money was offered. Once he reached the best firm in New York he stayed there thanks to the yearly income and the huge signing bonus which he paid for a new house for his parents and a brand new condo for himself. Both personally and professionally he was in the best stare of his life. After two years with the best firm he was able to get them their biggest account ever and with that the firm handsomely rewarded him.

The reward turned out to be quite a bit of cash and this cruise vacation was his first vacation in nearly three years. Basically forced upon him by the higher executives after securing the Helms account one of the biggest accounts secured by the company he was working for in their entire time they have been running.

Lucy Henry
Age: 26

Physical Description: Long brown hair, green-blue eyes which appear grey from afar, slender and petite but curvy. Five foot four inches tall, 133 lbs. She has a tattoo of a blue butterfly on her right hip with the initials J.S. in cursive script beneath it (Jennifer Scarpino was her best friend throughout police academy and was killed in the line of duty less than a year ago.)

History: Lucy grew up in Orlando, Florida and moved to Miami to attend police academy. She has been a police officer for nearly five years but has been in and out of counselling since seeing her best friend, Jenni, shot in a drug raid. This cruise is her first vacation since college. She was kind of forced into it by her commanding officer because he was worried she needed a break or might risk burnout.

..................................................................................................................................

"Get him out of here, go,go,go,go!" Lt. Lucy Henry shouted over the voices of those burning inside the sinking fore section of the cruise ship. She was pushing shocked civilians away from the waterlogged oven of a ship and toward the surging sea.

"I can't swim!" shouted the man dragging his heels as a redheaded woman pulled him toward the railing.

"Today's a great day to learn, GO!" replied Lucy as she grabbed the smallest, living person within reach and scooped him up into her arms, handing him off to the redheaded woman who had shoved the trepidatious man into the water with the others (most jumped ship of their own volition). The redhead took the child and tried to drop him into the overloaded emergency raft with the people in there but not one of the cowards in there reached to catch him and he fell helplessly into the water with a scream.

"Oh, shit!" cried the redhead who'd been helping Lucy evacuate survivers as quickly as they could considering how fast the ship was sinking. "I'm sorry, I have to go after him." she said to Lucy, climbing over the railing, "...my fault..."

Lucy nodded in understanding and placed a strong, calming hand on the woman's shoulder as they stared respectfully at one another from opposite sides of the railing, "What's your name? I want to remember your bravery, Ma'am."

"Riley, Madilynn Riley."

Lucy nodded, "Lt. Lucy Henry. I hope to see you again but if I don't I am proud to have served with you, Riley. Now, please help that little boy swim to shore."

....Hours later, she coughed up an entire stomach's contents of saltwater on the craiggy beach and looked up at the bodies all around her, washing up, en masse, surrounding her...At first she thought she was all alone among a sea of dead but, soon others moved too and she could distinguish eight others...and Riley was among them, cradling the toddler they'd saved. Lucy sighed feeling some relief among this morbidity. But, he looked pretty bad, it looked like at one point in the rough sea the kid must have konked his head on the rocks and Lucy wondered if he'd make it for very long. Riley seemed absolutely dedicated to caring for the boy, though, and Lucy counted him lucky to have found such a kind soul in the chaios that followed witnessing the death of his parents on board the ship...

Brady Jone's head was spinning. It felt like he had been hit in the head with rocks for over and hour. That wasn't all that far off actually. As the boat started sinking People dashes towards the life rafts one person holding and oar caught Brady on the side of the head and as he stumbled the boat tilted making him lose his balance and whack his head off of the railing. As he kept slipping in and out of consciousness he managed to grab onto a life saver ring and fell into the water with it. The cold water rushing onto him woke him up enough to slip his arms and body through the ring. He tried to swim to the nearest shore but again he was gripped by his injuries and passed out.

Waking up on the soft drying sand of a shore Brady began to wake up his head pounding, He looked around seeing a mass of bodies most of them looking dead, water logged and almost blue. He looked around and noticed some women caring for a child. He stood up and stumbled over to them nearly falling a few times as he made his way over. "You all right?" He asked such a silly question but what else could he say at this point.

Madi held the little boy close and watched as his eyes fluttered open, his pupils were still unevenly dialated and it was a little distressing to realize he wasn't doing very well even despite the bleeding to the wound on his head having stopped. He looked very young, maybe between two and three years old. She wondered how well she could expect him to talk since children that age varied so widely in what one could consider normal..."Hello, sweetheart. I bet your head hurts."

He nodded and whimpered a little, gripping her soaked shirt tighter in his little fist. Good sign, she told herself, he seemed responsive and cognizant of her statement.

"My name is Madi. What's your name?" she asked him.

"Kenny." he said softly. "I'm cold."

She held him a little tighter and nodded, "I'm cold too, Kenny. I hope we can get dry soon, moving will help us to stay warm too. Let's get up and see about walking around a little...maybe find a nice place to hang out which is drier than this beach. Ok?"

"Stinks here..." said Kenny but Madilynn moved him just before he had a chance to take a look toward the waterline full of bloated bodies.

Lt. Henry came over and told them she counted six other adults who appeared alive besides themselves and little Kenny.

Lucy began to explain her plan, "We should all get together and organize labor. It may be a while before we can flag down rescue. We need to make sure we find a place to get out of the sun when it gets higher later, and find a clean water source..."

"You all right?" asked the voice of one of the survivors who'd come to join them. Both women turned and regarded him and Riley shrugged, "Are you?"

"You look pretty strong. Why don't you help me drag up anything that looks like it might be useful for survival from the pile of junk and bodies building up over there in the water." Lucy then turned her attention to Riley, "Riley, you take the kid up into the area past the beach where there's some trees for shelter, check it out, see if there looks like a good spot to set up camp. We'll find you if you don't go too far."

As other's approached the small group everyone began getting orders for things to do and somehow, in the numbness of shock having a job to do felt comforting despite the slight annoyance at how bossy the two ladies had become as they assigned work.

Ben McCarthy woke, his muscles screaming in pain, causing a low moan to escape him.

It took him a moment to register what had happened, before memory of the terrifying night returned to him...the terrible storm, the ship hitting rock or reef, being flung wildly over the railing.

He had swam for his life last night...he was fortunate he was a strong swimmer, having been on the swim team in college and continuing to do so for exercise had probably saved his life, allowing him to keep afloat in the turbulent, storm-tossed waters until, in the edge of exhaustion, he'd found something to cling to.

He spat sand from his lips....he was laying on a beach, shivering cold, his eyes still closed, the bottom half of his body still laying in the water. He groaned again, lifting his head, and slowly opening his eyes...and cried out in shock, jerking away in horror as his eyes focused on the sight before him

The blue-skinned corpse of a young woman in her twenties lay before him, her eyes, already becoming milky in death, seeming to stare blankly into his. He quickly scrambled to his feet, backing away, and looking around, and what he saw made him feel nauseous with revulsion. Corpses littered the beach all around him...dozens of them.

He ran his hands through his hair, looking around. Out of the corner of his eye, further up the beach, he saw movement.

"Thank God," he thought in relief, "More survivors...I'm not alone!"

There were a half dozen or so people standing in a tight group, seeming to almost huddle protectively around each other, and in his great relief, his pain was forgotten as he jogged over to join them.

He stopped short, looking at the small group of survivors...

Everyone looked pretty bedraggled and exhausted, a young woman with red hair, holding onto a child with a head wound. a muscular blonde man, and a pretty, dark haired brunette seemed move to the forefront to greet him, while the others huddled back.

"Hello," he said, in greeting, sighing in relief, as he slowly approached the group, "I'm Ben...Ben McCarthy...I can't tell you how glad i am to see you all..."

OOC: Normally would not interrupt the flow but when I looked at the last two time stamps I found it quite amusing. 8:59 & then 9:58,lol.

Lucy nodded and began introducing everyone she had already spoken with to Ben. She asked, "So, Ben, do you know first aid? Riley could use a little help with some of the wounded, especially since it seems little Kenny has grown quite attached to her for now so she's having a hard time getting her hands free to do more serious first aid. Maybe you could help her, unless you think you'd be of more help with us in fishing out some of the luggage and useful stuff we can find here in the water to drag to the shore? It's up to you, but the other's are already starting on the whole shelter building at the edge of the wooded area up there. The faster we can get some semblance of order set up here, the faster we can maybe come up with the next plan, trying to figure out where the hell we are and how to get out of here."

"Well, I can't say I'm TOO awful familiar with first aid, aside from handling a few cuts and scrapes and such, and CPR training. I'm a high school english teacher, so I'm afraid I don't have much of a medical background."

He looked down, seeing the little boy shivering, and said, "I DO know, we need to get him warm. With a head wound, there's a good chance he has a concussion...we don't need to add shock to it."

Ben looked to Lucy, beings she seemed to be the one taking charge at the moment, and said, "I think we better try to find a way to get a fire going, and fast. If his body heat keeps dropping...well, we could have a major problem on our hands."

Ben took off his shirt, trying to wring out the water as best as he could, and then handed it to the redhead...Riley, he though Lucy had called her. "It won't help much, but do what you can to keep him warm..."

Looking to Lucy, he said, "I'd suggest whoever is scrounging things from the wreckage to keep a close eye out...be on the lookout for lighters, matches, blankets...anything like that...we need to keep this kid warm."

Lucy agreed with Ben and as she was about to speak Riley interrupted, wrapping little Kenny up in the shirt handed to her as his eyes rolled from the movements, "I've been camping enough times with my older brothers and such, I think if we can find something dry up there I can get a fire started."

She led Ben and a couple of others up to the woods just a little bit from the beach but at a higher elevation where a makeshift shelter was being contructed between four trees using materials washed up from the ship a capsized raft and some tarps for roofing...

Carefully setting Kenny down in some soft brush in the shade close to where the shelter was being made, she set to work quickly finding some wood and kindling materials for a fire. "Ben, how are your fire-making skills?" she asked conversationally as he helped her build a place slightly away from the trees for the fire.

Ben looked at Riley, and replied, "Well, if i have a lighter or matches, I'm fine....without em? Well, I get the basic principals...friction and all...but I wasn't exactly an Eagle Scout. Best i can do it try to fake it, i guess."

He looked around worriedly, wondering how there were going to survive here...exposure, dehydration, starvation....all were very real dangers here. The shelter was a good start, but they had to do something to get fire going...and before too long, drinking water was going to be a priority too.

Ben grabbed a bit of thin rope hanging from the remains of the broken lifeboat, and grabbed two somewhat slender sticks. Trying to fashion by memory, the bow-like contraption he'd seen in various movies.

"Fuck," he thought to himself, "I don't even know what this thing is CALLED, much less how to build it...but I've got to TRY..."

He looked over to little Kenny worriedly...this little boy's life was hanging in the balance, relying on if he was smart enough to figure out something that any boy scout above the age of ten probably already knew.

Glancing back at Riley, he asked, conversationally, to calm his own nerves, "Is he your little boy?"

IC:

"Is he your little boy?" Ben asked her, indicating Kenny shivering and half asleep beneath the tree.

Madi hoped the color in her face did not show. Gods, she had wished for a child of her own for so long...She shook her head. "No. I...don't actually have any children." she could hear her Irish lilt coming through in her aggitation and her annoyance at the situation came out through lashing out at Ben. "I'm not some cruel bitch who'd only notice another person in need of care only if they were my own relative or friend." She shook her head again and then looked down at his work. "No. That won't work, you've left no room for oxygen to get in..." She knealt in the sand by Ben and bodily took over his work. "I'll do it. If I wait for you it may never get done in time...Just, go stay with the child, please."

"No. I...don't actually have any children," she said, her voice suddenly short with him...apparently he'd unintentionally hit a sore spot. "I'm not some cruel bitch who'd only notice another person in need of care only if they were my own relative or friend."

Ben was taken aback by Madi's frustrated, almost angry outburst.

He looked up from his work, and said, "Umm...sorry, I didn't mean any offense there. I wasn't suggesting that you'd..."

Madi cut his apology off, moving closer and saying, "No. That won't work, you've left no room for oxygen to get in..." She knealt beside him, pulling the makeshift tools out of his hands irritatedly.

"I'll do it. If I wait for you it may never get done in time...Just, go stay with the child, please."

Ben felt anger rising in him at her pushy, and somewhat arrogant attitude, wanting to lash out at her verbally as well, but held his tongue. Now was not the time for arguments...and besides, she was probably right...he didn't really had no clue what he was doing as far as making a fire.

He walked over to the little boy, picking him up, trying to keep him warm, holding him on his lap and rubbing his arms and legs, and then holding the small boy's frail body closely, trying to keep his warm with his own body heat.

He peered down into Kenny's face, and Kenny looked back and said, "I'm cold..."

Ben smiled comfortingly at him and said softly, "I know, buddy...don't worry. We'll get a fire going here soon, and it'll be just like camping. It'll be ok. What's your name?"

"Kenny," the little boy replied in a weak voice.

"Hi, Kenny," Ben said, looking down at him as he held him closer, "I'm Ben."

Kenny's innocent gaze stared up at him, questioningly. "Where's my mama and daddy? I want them..."

Ben started to feel a bit choked up, knowing the little boy's parents were more than likely dead. As a person who'd lost his parents at an early age, he felt genuine empathy for the small boy in his arms.

He answered honestly, trying to keep his voice steady and soothing, "I don't know where they are, buddy....but don't you worry...I'll watch over you for awhile and make sure you're okay...sound good?"

Kenny nodded, and closed his eyes...and Ben shook him lightly, trying to keep him awake, fearing that if the little boy had a concussion, it'd be dangerous to let him sleep. "Try to keep awake, Kenny...we don't want you to go to sleep just yet, okay buddy?"

The little boy replied, "I'm tired..."

Ben began to rock him back and forth a bit, and looking down into the injured child's face, asked him, "Do you want to hear a story? One that my grandma used to tell me?"

Kenny smiled slightly and nodded.

"Ok," Ben said, smiling in return, and began, "Well...alrighty then. Once upon a time...."

-OOC:i am sorry i was reading every ones posts and some how got lost in translation

IC:Rusty began walking the island finding a few stray Fruit peices they looked like Apples and pears but were they is a diffrent story, he decided against it for the moment untill he got really hungry. Rustys journey through the island lead him past a few roads it seems, grabbing a big stick for deffence for what ever may be there awaiting him. Rusty ventured along untill he saw a peice of the ship in the distance and ran towards the coast when he got there he only found a few peices of metal, but no sign of his bags or anything else he sighed.-"Shit!?"-Rusty Decided to follow the coast line untill he couldnt follow any longer.-

Lucy worked hard, running back and forth between the sea and the beach as she frantically tried to work against the waves in recovering useful things from the ship. She'd been at it for hours...

Lucy was glad at some of what she managed to find in her mission to recover as much as she could from the burning wreckage floating cloe to the shore. She had to put it out of her mind what exactly it was she was wading through each time she ventured out into the water and pushed aside corpse after corpse to get to the luggage, machinery and materials being washed up. She managed to grab:

Some tarps and broken liferafts,
a pair of large nets
some length of thick rope and several meters of thinner rope
thirteen suitcases
glass jars and some cans of what looked like canned fruit and vegetables
a pair of life preservers
lots of mismatched shoes and other items of disguarded clothing
waterlogged blankets and bedding for at least nine people if everyone got two thick blankets and 1 sheet each
several large canisters she rolled aside (seven in total) with no clue what is inside of them
a first aid kit
a toolbox
a large bag of rice
and several sections of broken wall from the ship which she thought could possibly be used in the basis for creation of a more permanent sort of structure.

By the time she came up the beach with the last of the large, unmarked containers she was too exhausted to swim back in. Collapsing in the sand, she passed out among her work. That's when someone scooped her up and said in a voice she didn't recognize, "Ok Rusty. At least you know you're not alone here."

She repeated the name as her eyes struggled to open but unconsciousness pulled her back, "Rusty?"

Madi got the fire started but not without much frustration and silent cursing as she worked at it, burning the tip of her left index finger in the process. "Alright..." she said, blowing at the smoke to create flames and feeding the flames to the fire pit they'd created. She looked up at Ben, cradling young Kenny and telling him a story. She smiled at them both, "Not a moment too soon," she said.

As she urged Ben and Kenny closer to the fire she looked up to see the others were making good progress on the shelter. "Excellent!" she said, rising and looking around to see what else needed to be done. When no one was around to hear she whispered to Ben, "SorryI snapped at you earlier. My nerves are a little frayed here, and I was as cold and scared as anybody. But, a nice warm fire does help."

Kenny nodded, "Feels good." he said softly. Madi ran a hand through his hair and smiled at him, "I hope so. Now you stay right here and I am going to see if I can find something more for that cut on your head, ok? Stay here."

-Rusty smelled something he had ot be halfway around the island by now,Rusty began to run along the coast it had been traveling for afew hours and finally could see people in the distance he smiled-"Hell ya! i found people!"-he said as he ran towards them quickly getting closer some people were helping and one person seem to be passed out.Rusty looked as what they where doing and Ran in he to began to search for things in the water, he found his suit cases didnt know if either of them were any good ,and other suitcases to he went under the currents and found a few other peices of wall, and Rope, he found three sets of Currtens from the ship,a few peices of cooking Material like pans and such, and 5 or so boxes of non-parishable food like baged items of rice,Cereal, and what seem like pancake mix.Rusty put the items aside and groaned a bit he had been feelign the effects of hunger not built for survival he would have to toughen up quick. once he helped out abit he walked over and shook the face down female.-"Hey are you ok"-he said Waiting for a answer he grabed a few peices of wood and took his boy scout tool out the only thing he carried on him and put a fire togeather in a 10minute span. The flint on the tool would come in handy as he walked back over and dragged he rbody to the warm fire he invited the other peole to come around and he looked over to them-"im glad i found you guys i thought i was the only surviving person from the ship"

Madi was glad to see a first aid kit was amongst the things salvaged from the ship. She started rummaging through it immediately and was relieved to find out that Diana, one of the other survivors who'd been busy with the shelter building up until that point, was a big help with organizing medical supplies by possible need. She was a gyriatric nurse but her medical background and experience was extensive enough that she was now voted to act as the group's medical expert until rescue.

Madi and Diana worked together to better clean the wound on Kenny's head and bandaged him up with a clean gauze with a strip of clean linen wrapped around his head. "He's looking better already." said Diana, checking his pupils once more and then she turned Madi around and said quietly so only she and Ben could hear, "Tonight will be the true test. If he makes it through the night and seems better than he is today by morning he'll survive just fine. "

Madi took a glance back at the sleepy looking toddler, her heart would break with guilt if he died. She felt like he was suffering because she had not dropped him into the life raft (even though no one on that life raft had survived to make it to the island, her guilt was irrational).

"He'll make it through the night. I'll make sure of it." vowed Madilynn.
