science geeks!

Because of the compression and rotational force...

It's a torus, not a two-dimensional picture.

;) ;)

It because of gravity. The moon doesn't pull the water enough on the far side to cause it to come around. It's not so much as there are two bulges as much as there is the bulge from the moon's pull and then two low spots on either side.

Compression and centrifugal force calculations don't create such a scenario as we experience. Only gravitational calculations do. Gravitation is also the only way we could have spring and neap tides.

fantastic!
tyvm.

why do i have something nagging at the back of my brain about the moon, as it travels around the earth, is coming between the earth and sun, interrupting the gravitational pull of the sun/earth and this is ... oh phooey

is this some weird wrongness i picked up once that stuck, a mis-learning? i need to get rid of it if so.

no, you're right.
but the sun only has around half the pulling power of the moon.
that's a different diagram. uh huh.

I don't know what you are trying to convey here, but the Moon and the Sun do both work on the Earth. Gravitational forces are cumulative and directional. If the Moon and Sun are both in line, gravitational forces of both of them will pull together. If the Earth is in between, then the force of the Moon will subtract from the force of the Sun. If the Moon is off to the side, the Sun will pull at 90 degrees from the force of the Moon. Thinking of the Earth as a piece of metal and the Sun and Moon as different sized magnets helps some people.

wants to crack a joke about my own pulling power but can't be arsed.

Tomorrow's assignment is to explain why LaGrange points occur.

I so hated orbital mechanics. It was second least favorite class right behind Statistical Thermal Physics. I transferred from Physics to Aerospace Eng. and ended up with classes I hated more.

Really? I loved it. But I have to admit, the three body problem is a bit of a bitch.

The bitch of it all was I hated Aero and transferred to Computer Science and ended up having to write an n-body gravitational simulation program.

I've blocked all that from memory.

ok...the world is flat, we're the centre of the universe and tides happen because god tells them too!

faith: when you can't be arsed with trying to understand the truth

We would have been better off living in caves. Bludgeoning each other with animal parts and mating with whatever crossed out paths. I especially like the go out, drag her back to the cave by her hair and fuck her senseless part. When you get bored with her, go bludgeon someone else and fuck his too. I think I'd be good at that.

Lord Cash is not holding out to see if the science is sound?

Google, FedEx and eBay use Bloom Boxes already. I only care if it works from a personal perspective (I want one in the Savage Manse), but from an investment perspective, the stock is going to fly high

If I mail you all of my cash can you get me in on the ground floor?
