Jada Trinket trudged up the steps of the seedy motel that was her home for this week, the night had been fruitless and what little information she'd been able to gather had left her running in circles towards dead ends.

She'd been tracking a particular vampire for going on seven years now and while she had slain the unfortunates that had crossed her path, she was uninterested in any besides this one. Jada had thought he was a man once upon a time, a creepy man but a man none the less. He had approached her father one evening looking for a job when she was only 16. Her father was ringleader of their travelling circus and the man showed uncanny ability for walking across a tightrope.

Jada begged her father not to hire the man, she said he creeped her out but her father told her that was not a good enough reason not to give this poor bloke a helping hand. The man was James Landry, he only ever performed night time shows and Jada felt his eyes on her when she threw knives to entertain the customers, she'd learnt to do that at the age of five and could be blindfolded and still hit the bullseye.

One night her mother; for reasons unknown to Jada, had entered the big top and saw James feeding on a young female customer. Jada would never forget the blood curdling scream her mother issued before running out into the night while Jada watched from the window of her trailer. Her father ran to assist her mother and the vampire moved at inhuman speed to devour them both. When Jada finally blinked away her trauma at this unbelievable sight and ran out into the night to help her parents; the vampire was long gone.

Jada had hunted him for years without ever getting within sight of him, he always seemed to be a step ahead of her which wasn't surprising considering how fast they seemed to move. She had researched them for the first year and trained herself to anticipate them, to understand them and to fight them. All of this was in preparation for the day she finally crossed James' path and she hoped that day was soon now that she felt she was ready.

Jada sighed and unlocked the door to her room, she wandered in, dropped the keys inside and kicked the door shut. She took off her long leather coat to reveal her thin figure, covered in a black lycra dress that came down to just cover her ass which was fine because she wore black micro shorts underneath. The laces down the sides of the dress were tricky and on this particular evening; Jada had no patience for them and decided not to change.

She unstrapped the flat knives on her outer thighs and took a gun from a shoulder holster, she threw them on the bed and sat down. Her knee high boots were a massive six inches and she often got stares for wearing them but the heel was necessary to cause damage when she fought. Her 5'9" height did not do her abilities justice and were it not for a long scar across her neck she might have seemed quite innocent.

Jada rubbed the scar absent-mindedly, she cursed the vamp she had let slide by her and slit her throat. She had underestimated them up to that point, figuring they only needed their teeth as weapons but she would not be fooled again. Her long black hair and sapphire eyes were convincing lures to most vampires but obviously not the one she so desired to lure and this confounded her!

"It shouldn't be this difficult to catch one damn vamp!" Jada whined to herself and collapsed onto the bed, the sun would be up in a few hours and while there was still time to hunt; Jada had simply had enough chasing for the evening...

James sighed softly. Running away from the girl for all of these years had been tedious, and seeing other vampires get caught in the crossfire of her chasing him had been grating on his nerves for as long as it had been happening. He hadn't thought that there was a solution to this though. He had figured that the best option was to keep running and let her chase him. That was until recently. He had decided that running was no longer an entertaining part of the game, and he had decided not to let her kill any more vampires.

Moving her without waking her hadn't been all that much of a challenge. Now that he had her in the other room, bound down to a couch. He sighed softly as he looked down at her for. He had removed those micro-shorts from under her dress, but really that was the only thing that he had done aside from binding her. Now he had to wait for her though. He had to wait for the girl to wake up.

He smiled softly as he sat backwards in a chair, letting his chin rest on the back of the chair, his arms wrapped loosely around it. His straight dark hair was just long enough to fall in front of his emerald green eyes. Currently he was wearing a dark button up shirt and a pair of dark slacks. He also had a pair of black socks on as well as his silk boxers. He brought his hand up slowly to rub at his forehead. This was just an interesting situation. In this game of cat and mouse, the mouse had just set off a number of interesting traps on the poor unsuspecting cat. He chuckled at that and closed his eyes.

"You can do it Jada! Just aim and throw!" He urged her as she stood 10 feet from a target, only ten years old and blindfolded.

"I can't Da! I can't see it!" She whined.

"Yes you can! See it in your mind and throw!" Her father held her hand and squeezed, "Throw!"

~II~

Jada woke up in a cold sweat, breathing heavily as her eyes opened and adjusted to the lighting of the room. She reached up to brush her hair from her face but froze suddenly; her other hand had come with it and she was not alone.

Jada held her hands up, they were tied together and she quickly registered her ankles also tied together. Her eyes widened, she was not in her own hotel room and she remembered...I'm not alone...

She looked in the direction that she felt his eyes, burning into her like black coal and surprisingly she groaned audibly.

"Oh fuck! You have got to be kidding me!" She instantly recognized James, she had waited seven years to see him again and like all vampires - he had not changed at all.

Jada did a quick check of her body, he'd removed her shorts and obviously her weapons were nowhere to be found as they were in her hotel room. She baraded herself for allowing this to happen, she had never had such a bad week in all her life!

"Hello James..." Her tone was icy and her sapphire blue eyes stared menacingly into his emerald green ones.

She was apprehensive but refused to be afraid, Jada used her hands and wiped the hair from her face less than gracefully and she edged up in the seat slightly. Being on her back in front of him made her feel too vulnerable, her dress hiked up slightly but she ignored it and stared at him; wondering what he was thinking.

He sighed softly as he looked at her. She always gave him those dark eyes. She always looked at him like he was a monster. Well, he supposed that he was. He traced his fingers over his lips for a moment, "Jada..." His lips had curled into a half smile as he looked at her. She had been so afraid of him all those years ago, and while she was hiding it well with hate, he could still see that fear now. He sighed softly and closed his eyes for a long moment.

"You've been an interesting adversary, well, at least until now." He smirked softly at that, watching her closely, knowing that it would probably make her fly into a rage that she had been captured like this and was being reminded of that. He stared at her for a few more long moments and then sighed softly, "So, is this the part where you cry out that you are going to claim vengeance for the deaths of your parents and then find yourself still tied up on the bed and stripped of your weapons?" He smiled softly and let his chin rest propped up in his palm by his arm. This would be interesting to watch anyway.

Her visage was cold as he spoke; allowing no flicker of emotion to cross her face though she very much wanted to kill him for his words. She strained against her bindings the whole time but it only served to cut her skin deeper and rub it raw.

"No James, I wouldn't give you the satisfaction. Isn't this the part where you kill me?" As she spoke, a look of confusion graced her face and she wondered why he hadn't killed her already.

"What do you want? Obviously you want something or you'd have no reason to keep me alive so what is it? Light torture for your dead companions?" She snarled at him and squirmed against her bindings again.

She growled as they refused to give, she was wasting her energy and she knew it. Jada smoothed out her skirt with her bound hands and edged up into a proper sitting position. Her eyes had finally adjusted and she realized they'd been staying in the same hotel as this room was almost identical to her's if not a little better.

She looked down at her ankles which were similarly bound and back at James, she was very much afraid of this vampire unlike all the others she had encountered along the way which were nothing more than practise to her. He also seemed unconcerned about her so called vengence which only served to both anger and worry her.

He looked at her seriously as she asked him what it was that he wanted. What an interesting question. He considered how he was going to answer carefully and then after taking a long breath finally spoke up, "Well, I'm sure you won't be surprised to find that our wants are mutually exclusive." His eyes watched her closely as she shifted around trying to get more comfortable, "You want to kill me, and I very much want to continue living, so in the end only one of us is going to achieve our goal. Now obviously since you're the one tied up on a bed, I'm the one who's going to be achieving my goal today." He sighed softly and closed his eyes. This was interesting, but only really interesting when she found out what exactly he was planning here.

He slowly opened his eyes again, looking forward to her and then spoke softly for her, "Now, I am left with two options on how I can proceed here. I can attempt something to pacify you, show you that I'm not such a monster and in fact can be quite kind, or I could tell you about the unfortunate accident where I was forced to kill both of your parents because your mother had desires that your father couldn't fill, and she thought that the tightrope walking stranger could help her scratch a certain itch." He kept his chin up again supported by the palm of his hand as he watched her. He had no doubt that she'd start struggling and slip into another rage now that he had spoken up about what had happened on the night her parents had died. She'd tell him he was a liar and that she hated him...and then she'd probably cry...well, he just wasn't sure what he was going to do about that.

Jada was livid, “Don’t talk about my parents James, nothing gives you the right! I’d be happy to scratch your itch with a knife!” She snarled at him, her body shaking with anger and sadness, after all her parents hadn’t been dead that long.

“You are a monster! I saw you that night, I saw you kill…” Her voice cracked, she had to stop or she knew she was going to cry but still the need to scream everything she felt at him was overwhelming.

She flipped her legs off the couch so she could sit and face him, revealing herself in the process; she awkwardly stood slightly to allow her dress to fall down again properly. Jada flushed red with embarrassment but she supposed it was James’ way of making her feel more vulnerable.

“Just tell me what you want…” Jada said after taking a deep breath to calm herself, “how do you propose we solve our little problem then? What exactly is your goal? How are you going to pacify me after all you’ve done? And I don’t want to hear stories James, you’re a murderer and that’s just what you are!”

Her expression was contorted with fear, anger and slight sadness over the mention of her parents but she supposed that was the reaction he was looking for. She held back her tears for all it was worth, refusing to give him that satisfaction!

James sighed softly, his fingers tracing over his lips for a moment until his thumb managed to find its way between his front teeth. He bit down on it as he watched her carefully. What did he want...a compelling question. He supposed that it could have many answers. He watched her for a few long moments, considering all of the things that he could say to her. He simply shrugged as he looked at her, "What do I want..." He was slow in asking the universe the question, making every syllable audible, "Well, that is a rather interesting question, isn't it?" His dark eyes watched hers closely, knowing that she would probably think that he wanted awful nefarious things. He shrugged softly, "I suppose first and foremost I want you to stop trying to hunt me down and murder me. That is a very powerful want that I have. It's easily achieved by ending your life, but really, that seems a bit too drastic." He smiled softly as he looked at her, "Beyond that I suppose I have the same wants and needs as anyone else, but I suppose since you've filled your life with nothing but revenge since you were a child the idea of what 'normal' people would want escapes you."

He sighed softly as he looked at her for a few more long moments, "That's probably why it's so hard for you to believe that what happened was really what happened. You have buried any of your human needs like the desire to have a warm body next to you, and the joys of sexual satisfaction under your pressing need to end my existence." He shrugged a little back and reclined a bit more in his chair, causing it to tilt up so that it was only resting on two of it's legs, "As a result we have been playing this game of cat and mouse where the little mouse chases after the big bad cat with a toothpick, and a bad attitude." With a thud his chair came back to resting on all of it's legs again, "All of that being said, what do you suppose it is that I'm likely to do to you?"

His calm conversationalist tone was unnerving Jada a great deal, her body shook with slight fear but she allowed none of it to pass into her expressionless face. She maintained eye contact and stirred in her bonds to some extent but attempted to keep her struggles hidden from him. As he mentioned ending her life her eyes flickered but as he spoke casually of it being too drastic she found herself tensing up and wondering why?

"That's probably why it's so hard for you to believe that what happened was really what happened. You have buried any of your human needs like the desire to have a warm body next to you, and the joys of sexual satisfaction under your pressing need to end my existence."

She recoiled at this, leaning back into the couch; her brow furrowed in confusion and something she neglected to acknowledge. She snorted at his cat and mouse reference, suddenly thinking of an old show she used to watch as a kid; Tom and Jerry but then didn’t the mouse always win those games?

"All of that being said, what do you suppose it is that I'm likely to do to you?"

Jada hesitated before going through all he had said slowly, “Well…you don’t want to kill me but you want me to stop hunting you…I’m still alive so I suppose you’re being honest about that. As for what you’re likely to do to me…I don’t know…”

In truth Jada had some ideas crawling through her mind but she didn’t want to answer the question because none of these ideas, least of all being turned into a vampire had much appeal and that one was at the top of the list. Jada shuddered at the thought, fear streaked across her face in the instant she thought of it and James could clearly see the terror in her eyes this time.

“What do you…what are you going to do with me then James?” She asked nervously, her voice wavering with fear of the answer, “Don’t expect me to believe much of what you say…I can’t do that after what I saw that night…” She whispered, neglecting to mention her parents because she was afraid she might start crying over it.

He sighed softly and brought his hand up again, drawing his fingernail along the crease between two teeth as if he had something stuck there and was trying to get it out. His eyes continued to watch the bound girl as sh tried to convince him to tell her what his plans were. How boring. He closed his eyes for a moment as if seeming to think about the whole situation, "Well, I could turn you. Ironically I think that not being human might bring some of those human urges you've been denying to light." This was definitely true. Vampires were rather sexual by nature, it would be interesting to see if she could still resist her sexual desires. His eyes slowly opened as he looked out at her. This discussion was going nowhere. He sighed softly and pushed himself to his feet, "The problem is I don't think that would put an end to you hunting me. You'd simply use any new powers that I ended up giving you to hunt me down with even more fire and vigor than you had before, only this time your intention would be to destroy me and then immediately destroy yourself because you didn't like what I had turned you into."

He stood over her, looking down at her for a few long moments with his eyes now having a cold and dark quality to them. He let his hands fall to his sides as he looked down at her, taking a deep inhale of breath, "So that leaves us back at the beginning. How can I open your eyes so that you'll understand me, and your repressed human nature?" He seemed to think about it for a few long moments.

Jada groaned as he went around in circles with her, she was grateful he had no intention of turning her but he was also correct, she’d probably just kill him anyway! Her eyes leveled with his, dark and empty in appearance as though he was calculating, she finally gave up struggling within her bindings as her wrists were red raw and the ropes were no looser than when she started.

"So that leaves us back at the beginning. How can I open your eyes so that you'll understand me, and your repressed human nature?"

She near growled her words, he didn’t seem to be asking her but still she responded, “This is all well and good James but I’ll die of old age before you get to the damn point! You obviously already have intentions; I’m not stupid so stop treating me like I am! I may not be able to read your mind but that much is plain as day!”

Jada just wished the sun would come up and do her job for her in that instant, if not for her or her parents then for her annoyance at his calm conversation. She gritted her teeth and just wished he would leave her for five minutes so she could at least get her legs free!

“And who the hell are you calling repressed? You don’t know a thing about me James!” Her expression creased with anger at his assumption, her skin crawling with concern as to what he actually did know about her but she pushed that to the back of her mind and watching him carefully.

He sighed softly at the challenging words of 'you don't know a thing about me'. How narrow her view must have been. He sighed softly and got up, spinning the chair around on it's back legs, causing it to move closer to her. He then casually sat down in it so that he was facing her, "I don't know anything about you? I know that you've dedicated yourself to finding me and killing me and haven't spent more than perhaps a few moments of your time entertaining anything else since the unfortunate events with your parents." He pulled his legs up slowly, wrapping his arms around them so that his knees were up under his chin, which descended to rest on the slope created by his knees meeting, "I know that in every bar that you've stopped to gather information there has been at least one human male who has offered you a drink in the hopes that good times could be had against the soft surface of a mattress later in the evening..." He blinked slowly his dark eyes focusing on hers, "...and you've turned absolutely every one of them down so that you could instead pursue children of the night instead of pursuing the joys that your body could afford you."

His eyes flashed slightly as he looked at her, "I know that at this very moment you are hoping that the sun will come up and save you from me, but somewhere deep down you also know that there's no way that I haven't considered something like that." He shrugged softly and then slowly closed her eyes, "I also know that if it did happen you'd be terribly sad, not because I was dead, but because the divine ball of fire that floats in your day lit sky had taken my life and robbed you of your vengeance."

He let his shoeless feet slip off of the front edge of the chair and too the floor below them, slowly pushing himself up to his feet, "I know that since you found yourself tied up and at my mercy you've been asking yourself why you were still alive and what I could possibly want from you, but you haven't actually accepted that what I've said I wanted is true." He stared at her carefully, "I want you to accept that you've filled your life with nothing but the thought of vengeance and as a result you have claimed a very hollow existence. I'm considering letting you know by showing you what you've been missing, but I don't think that would take away from your sense that hunting me is a form of judgment..." He took the half step forward, his hand slowly coming up, almost reaching out to touch her, but stopping before any contact is actually made, "Now I'm considering leaving you here with the instruction to find some form of pleasure for yourself that doesn't involve hunting me. A talented girl like you, you'll be out of those ropes in probably ten or fifteen minutes, and by then I'll be long gone..." He reached into his pocket and slowly drew her panties from it, "And of course, if I catch you again, I'll have to take more than your undergarments as punishment. That sounds not only fair but merciful, don't you think?"

Jada listened in awe of the vampire, her face flushed with crimson embarrassment; she didn’t even recoil as his hand stretched out as though to touch her. He’d watched her the whole time it seemed and he didn’t care that he humiliated her with his openness. She watched as he drew her panties from his pocket and her eyes fell to focus on the floor. The blush in her cheeks was a startling red and his deal made little sense to her in that moment.

“You’d let me go free James?” She looked up at him, her eyes glistening with unshed tears and her voice was barely more than a whisper.

“I thought you’d kill me if we ever met so it begs the question; why does a vampire wish to be merciful to a hunter?”

Jada knew James could easily kill her; it wouldn’t even be sporting. She supposed taking her underwear was his way of making her feel more vulnerable but she truly needed to know why he was going to be ‘fair’ to her. Were she in his position; she’d have killed him already.

“How long…how long have you watched me James?” How could you…I-I don’t understand.” She shook her head in an attempt to clear it, “Alright James…I agree to your terms on the condition that you tell me what…what happened the night you…the night my parents died?”

Jada suddenly felt an amazing sense of dry mouth as she got that out at last. She needed to know before he left her to get free even if she didn’t believe him; her curiosity would be satisfied. Jada still wasn’t certain that she was being honest when she told him she agreed to his terms; how could she keep such a promise knowing what he’d done and what he was?

His chin was left to rest on his knees which were held so high because of the fact that his shoes were caught on the edge of the chair. His dark eyes continued to watch the girl as she struggled with the idea that he wasn't going to kill her and tried to understand why, first by thinking about it and then by openly asking him why she was being given the chance to live. He blinked slowly and then finally spoke up softly, "The reason I am giving you a chance to live is simply because you really aren't a vampire hunter. You're an avenger, and a misguided one at that." He stared at her silently and then spoke up, "I'm giving you this opportunity because as of yet, you haven't been successful in raising your hand against me. While you have chased me with all of your might, and you have kept every shred of that fire and anger so that you could one day loose it on me in an attempt to completely destroy me, you have yet to realize it any time that you were this close to me." His toes curled and uncurled for a moment, "You have come after me with only me in mind, and every time another of my kind got in your way you destroyed them, but in most cases that could be argued as self-defense, especially since half of the time you lure them in by acting like an easy mark."

He yawned a tiny bit as he looked at her. The demand that she had made was a bit troublesome. He closed his eyes and then spoke up again, "The night your parents died, I had made a meal out of a young woman who had come to see me after the show. Of course, it's a necessity to survive, I'm sure you understand. As I was finishing my meal, your mother arrived, desperate to have me scratch an itch that she simply could not reach. She found me in the rather unfortunate position that I was in and panicked. Now of course, I couldn't afford for everyone to know that I was a frightening beast of the night, and also it seemed that your father was quick to come and exterminate me when he had found out that his wife had run into a horrifying monster." He sighed softly, "It was self defense, like every time you extinguished the flame of a vampire who was about to consume you."

His eyes watched her closely, "Does that satisfy your curiosity?"

Jada listened carefully to James, not quite sure whether or not he was being entirely honest with her but then there was not much truth leaving her own lips. She still wasn’t certain she would cease to hunt James but like the good little actress she was; none of it showed on her face.

"Does that satisfy your curiosity?"

Actually it hadn’t, she had one more question but decided it was best left alone; she wanted nothing more to do with James Landry tonight. Jada nodded her assent and waited, he seemed to judge her a moment before he silently inclined his head in return and got up from his seat. Moments later he had vanished through the door and Jada Trinket found herself alone in this motel room.

Quickly she wrestled with the ropes on her wrists, twisting her hands until one was facing her body. She used that hand to grip the neck of her black lycra dress and slipped her hand inside; fishing a switchblade from her bra. Jada had learnt to be prepared in some capacity at the very least!

As soon as she was free, she made a dash for her own hotel room and locked herself inside; breathing heavily as she slumped against the back of the door and looked over at the bed. Her knives were still there where she left them, the gun and holster too; Jada sighed in relief and wandered to her suitcase. She popped it open and slammed it down on the bed before she started rummaging through it.

“What the…?” Jada growled at first and then sunk to her knees, she started to cry all over again.

She kept wondering if the whole ordeal had been real but James had left her a parting gift and had taken every last pair of panties she’d had…at least she hoped it was just James! His last words kept replaying in her mind over and again.

“Don’t come looking for me Jada, you won’t like the consequences…”

Somehow Jada knew she would, he couldn’t be allowed to get away with this! He couldn’t just say his little piece and make everything better between them! Besides, he now owed her money for all the underwear shopping she’d have to do! Before she could give it too much thought; Jada began to strap her knives to her thighs and attached her holster and gun…next time they crossed paths, she would be ready for him.
